Halloween in Poland – the saints against the wights

Halloween is a quite new tradition in Poland, however it arouse many controversies. To some,
the festival is an embodiment of all the evil, the great neo-pagan and Satanist holiday, a
celebration from which everyone would do best to stay away. To others, it is a foreign
custom, an American vogue and a focus for the entertainment industry; to still others,
Halloween is a type of carnival festivity, devoid of any deeper meaning, yet attractive because
of its form. The article analyzes attitudes towards Halloween in Poland and shows that a
dialogue between supporters and opponents of that celebration is truly difficult, especially
when Halloween is perceived as a threat for traditional celebrations of All Saints‟ Day.
Halloween jest świętem w Polsce stosunkowo nowym, budzi jednak wiele kontrowersji. Dla
niektórych obchody tego święta stanowią wcielenie samego zła, wielką neopogańską czy
satanistyczną celebrację, od której należy trzymać się z daleka. Dla innych to obcy zwyczaj,
wpływ kultury amerykańskiej i trybik napędzający biznes komercyjny. Dla jeszcze innych to
swoisty karnawał, zabawa pozbawiona jakiegokolwiek głębszego znaczenia, ale atrakcyjna ze
względu na swą formę. Artykuł przedstawia analizę postaw wobec Halloween w Polsce i
pokazuje, że dialog pomiędzy zwolennikami oraz przeciwnikami święta jest trudny, gdyż
Halloween bywa postrzegane jako zagrożenie dla tradycyjnych obchodów Dnia Wszystkich
Świętych.
