Stary Sącz is a small Polish town in a picturesque part of the Carpathian Mountains called
Beskid Sądecki. It has a unique climate created by fully preserved, historic urban structure
and numerous valuable buildings. For this reason the town is referred to as the “Mediaeval
Pearl of the Beskid”. In 2007, Stary Sącz celebrated its 750 anniversary.

We have the honour to invite you to Stary Sącz

About culture
What does the local culture, folk or regional culture mean for us, the artists? What cultural
environment do we live in? What elements of local culture do we remember from our
childhood? Has the local culture affected our present lives, our creativeness? Do the products
of the regional, folk culture of the past influence us today? Have the values of local culture we
had met left their trace inside each of us?
Please send a short text in English, reflecting your own opinion on: “What is or what was the
folk, local culture of the region where you live”. The text should not be longer than 7
sentences. It will be published in the catalogue of works. We ask you also to provide us a
photograph of an object typical for your local culture. This cannot be the portrait of the artist.
The reproduction will illustrate and complete your text.
If possible, please take this piece of your local culture with you to Stary Sącz. We will show it
in the final exhibition.
Exhibition
In the final exhibition of our meeting, besides the works which will be painted in Stary Sącz,
we will present the pieces of local culture which you will bring with you, and your texts about
culture. We intend to provoke a discussion between the artists and the visitors on the real
meaning of local culture for us. We plan to record and write down the statements.
