RY8 INTER SCHOOL FINALS What fantastic speakers were the Year 8 students that presented to us this week at Rotary as part of the RY8 Finals. Liam Eastwell from Port High spoke to us about 'Blood Diamonds'. Named by the way they are mined and not their look we learned that people in 3rd world countries risk their lives to mine diamonds to produce the beautiful diamonds that we see worn by celebrities on the red carpet. Isabella & Mikayla Harrison from Westport High presented the cause, effect and impact of Global Warming. The girls showed us a short cartoon discussing how as humans are responsible for Global Warming and how we can change the effect of Global Warming. The girls even showed us an active volcano demonstration. Sam Moore from St Columba delivered a strong message to us about freedom of speech. He spoke about when Nations voice their opinion it may not be the opinion of the majority but we all should have the right to speak up and be heard to put our point forward. Lauren Bartie spoke to us about the issues of refugees. She really made us aware of the sad fact that refugees have no choice but to flee their country. We were amazed to learn that in Australia we have only 3% of the total refugees but struggle the most as a country with the management of refugees. What amazing speakers these students were and it is hard to believe they are only in Year 8. We wish them the best in their future which looks to be very bright. Well done!! Thanks to Judges: Brigitte Reiger, Ian Last, Sue Jogever and Kevin Pike.
