Remember in Prayer
As members of the parish faith community, it is
our responsibility to remember both in concrete
and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with
us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in
turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their
sufferings. We experience many blessings because of
their remembering us. And so...please remember in your
prayers:

A Prayer for the Armed Forces
Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty
arm to strengthen and protect the men and
women of our Armed Forces. As they face
the myriad of challenges and decisions that
each day is destined to bring, may they be
anchored by their faith, protected by Your
presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are
loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that,
meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline and loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
May God keep you safe!

From the Pastor
What do we wear and where?
We cannot always dress the way we want to. Our good sense tells us to keep some discipline. Of course we do
not wear fur coats in the summer or sandals in the winter. We wear different outfits when we visit friends, than when we
go to school or work, different dress for the beach than for skiing. We cannot jump into a pool wearing a suit and tie.
We cannot wear shorts when we visit the Queen of England. How do we dress to go to Church? Can we enter our Sanctuary in a beach outfit? Do we remember that we are supposed to dress modestly, decent and appropriate for a holy
place. When we are going to Church we are obviously going to see the King of Kings. We cannot distract others from
the important and right focus by wearing clothes that call attention to ourselves. Low cut neck lines, exposed backs or
stomachs or running shorts are these and some others really the proper dress for Church?
There is only way simple answer to the question. No! Please show respect to this holy place and do not take the
bad example from some others. There are some places and situations that we have to dress properly. In many countries
of Europe and the rest of the world no one would think of wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts to holy places, churches or
some other proper settings. Holy places demand proper outfits. Proper dress is not only the rule of the Christian religions. It is also the rule of other religions, sometimes ever more strict.
During the summer in our Church we see a lot of people dressing inappropriately for the Church. Recently there
was a book published “Savoir vivre in Church”. I am including here a few excerpts from it.
“We can see Church from three different aspects. Sometimes we just enter the Church for quick prayer, secondly we go to Mass during the week and three we go to Church on Sunday and Holy days. In the first example we do
not have to worry too much, casual is ok, as long as it is not distracting. We cannot visit in sport or beach wear that includes shorts or lingerie. Our outfit should not shock or disgust others. If we do so, we only show disrespect. Would you
visit the President, Vice-President or even your “Boss” wearing shorts, sweats or other non-proper outfits? In going to
Church we are visiting God.”
Going to Church and attending Mass or attending Mass during the week is like visiting someone. In this case it
is like visiting someone very special—God. “Savoir vivre” tells us not to wear our “raggedy” clothes when we visit
someone. Dressing properly shows respect to the person who invited us. So please remember to be a little bit elegant and
right for the occasion. Attending the Mass is even more important and demands even more elegance. In doing so we
show respect to those who invited us (priests and God) and other guests (the parishioners).
I wish you a happy Sunday and a blessed rest of the week.

Roses to those on the Way of the Cross
It remains our sincere hope that through word and deed,
education and example, we young and old one heritage or
another, would all come to know that our care for Our
Church — His really, is done through small and not so
small gestures of help and support. As a source of hope
and inspiration it is our intention to publish those names
in print who have done outstanding work in the course of
the week to “plant a rose” so to speak along the way as
we carry the cross in the glory of the victory “He” won.
Our part though small can and does grow. We might need
to see the proof. The names are both a thank you and attempt to have lots of roses where ever “the cross” is.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In September of 2006, Pope Benedict XVI
preached a homily in which he explained how those who
are baptized create one family of believers who are never
alone. The theme of this year’s Peter’s Pence Collection,
Let us make sure that none of God’s children ever feels
alone, is based on the Holy Father’s homily.
In solidarity with the Pope, we, as baptized
Catholics, are invited to participate in works of charity for
our brothers and sisters in need throughout the world. By
our sacrificial support of this collection, we join with
more than one billion Catholics worldwide in providing
the Holy Father the means necessary to provide for God’s
children who suffer from acts of war, oppression, disease
and natural disasters.
During the past ten years as your Archbishop, I
have witnessed the extraordinary generosity provided by
the people of this Archdiocese. Today, I ask your prayerful consideration in contributing to the 2007 Peter’s Pence
Collection. As always, I am grateful for your participation.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago

Umiłowani Bracia i Siostry
w Chrystusie:
We wrześniu 2006 roku Papież
Benedykt XVI wygłosił homilię, w
której przekonywał, że wszyscy
ochrzczeni tworząc jedną rodzinę
wiernych nigdy nie powinni pozostać
samotni. Tegoroczna zbiórka na rzecz
Świętopietrza (Peter’s Pence Collection)
przebiegnie pod hasłem: Zróbmy
wszystko by dzieci na całym świeci
czuły się równe”.
Solidaryzując się z Papieżem,
my jako ochrzczeni katolicy, jesteśmy
wezwani do uczestnictwa w pracy
charytatywnej na rzecz naszych braci i
sióstr będących w potrzebie na całym
świecie. Poprzez ofiarne wsparcie
Świętopietrza, dołączymy do ponad
miliarda katolików na świecie, którzy
dostarczają Ojcu Świętemu środki
potrzebne do niesienia pomocy
dzieciom Bożym, które cierpią z
powodu wojen, wyzysku, chorób czy
kataklizmów.
Jako Wasz Arcybiskup, przez
ostatnie dziesięć lat byłem świadkiem
niezwykłej hojności członków naszej
Archidiecezji. Dziś proszę Was o
poparte modlitwą wsparcie Kolekty na
Świętopietrze 2007. Jak zawsze jestem
wdzięczny za Wasz udział w tym dziele.
Wasz szczerze oddany w Chrystusie,

włożymy futra a zimą klapek.
miejsca. Niedawno ukazała się książka dotycząca właściwego ubrania i zachowania w kościele – „Savoir vivre w
Kościele”. A oto fragmentyz tej książki.
„Kościół możemy odwiedzić w sposób trojaki: niejako mimochodem wstępując do niego na krótką modlitwę;
Uczestnicząc we Mszy św. w dniu powszednim postępujemy w taki sposób jakbyśmy odwiedzali kogoś z
Savoir vivre w
Ks. Zdzisław Torba

ON SPIRITUAL ASSEMBLY MASSES, AND ST. MARCELLINE
Copyright 2007 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])
“The land beyond O’Hare.” That’s how Bishop George
Rassas described his vicariate as he introduced himself the other
night at the Chicago Association of Holy Name Societies’ 27th
annual Spiritual Assembly Mass, hosted this year by St. Marcelline Parish. St. Marcelline is in Schaumburg, IL, and since the
only thing I know of Schaumburg is Woodfield Mall, I figured
that the parish had to be right next door. It’s not. With our president Rich at the wheel and several members of my home parish’s Holy Name Society crammed into his minivan, we kept
heading west and west and west until finally I called out from
the back seat, “So where is this place…Iowa?”
holds in very high esteem as well: John, the Baptizer. Living in
the desert, eating wild honey and locusts and preaching repentance, he was a crazy man to some, but he was simply following
his prophetic call. As the angel told Zechariah, “Do not be
afraid, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth
will bear you a son, and you shall name him John…He will be
filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb, and he
will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.”
John plays a critical role in the history of Christianity, and he
does so by heralding the blessed name of Jesus.
An old saying holds that the journey to a friend’s
house is never long. Nor--despite my out-of-state reference--is
the journey to a Spiritual Assembly Mass. I’ve been to several
of them now and have found each event to be worth the trip.
The weather for the St. Marcelline gig was perfect, adding blue
and golden atmosphere to the impressive parade of banners before Mass even began. Next came the presentation of symbolic
gifts, including the Holy Name Society Pledge, “written on paper and inscribed in our hearts, in our minds, and on our
tongues.” The pledge itself, which stresses the Society’s belief
in and reverence for the name of Jesus, is powerful; Bishop
Rassas focused his homily on the importance of names in general, and of Jesus’s name in particular.
Which brings me back to the Spiritual Assembly
Mass. I embrace this event for a lot of reasons. Like I said, I
enjoy the hoopla of the banner parade and the solemnity of the
gifts presentation. I especially enjoy raising my voice in song
along with hundreds of other Holy Name Society men. And
certainly, there’s the Pledge: “Blessed be God. Blessed be his
holy name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man…”
Like the Baptizer, the Holy Name Society heralds the blessed
name of Jesus. True, all of the HNS men I know would prefer
the Italian beef which St. Marcelline’s served up after Mass
over John’s wild honey and locusts--or now, cicadas--but we’re
John-like just the same. In our own back yards and in the land
(way, way, way) beyond O’Hare, “we believe, O Jesus, that
thou art the Christ, the son of the living God...”
But we celebrate another name today that the church
