Provincia of Pesaro and Urbino
Overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the centre of Italy, Provincia of Pesaro and Urbino is in the Marche Region, which has always
been Italy’s “Gateway to the East”. Featuring the mountains of the Apennine chain, which gently slope towards the Adriatic
Sea along parallel valleys, Provincia of Pesaro and Urbino is set apart by its rare beauty and noteworthy figures such as
Raphael and Gioacchino Rossini, both were born here. Valentino Rossi, the champion, comes from a little village in the
Provincia of Pesaro and Urbino (Tavullia).
In addition to the combination of sea and nature, it’s possible to find centers with a lot of architectural and historical
beauties, ancient villages, abbeys, libraries, museums, castles and historic mansions.
Some examples of the main and more interesting villages to visit are: Urbino, World Heritage Sites and one of the most
important site for the Renaissance’s art and architecture; Gradara, ancient medieval village mentionad in the famous Dante’s
masterpiece (La Divina Commedia); Fano, Roman city reached by the historical via Flaminia.

Visa
After the signing of the Shengen agreement, all border controls were abolished. Citizens of European Union Member States
are allowed to move freely, while citizens of USA, Australia, Canada, Japan and New Zealand are allowed to stay in Italy
without VISA only 90 days.

All important documents (passport data page and visa page, credit cards, travel insurance policy, tickets, driver’s licence etc)
should be photocopied before you leave home. Leave a copy with someone at home and keep one with you, separate from
the originals.

Tipping
You are not expected to tip on top of restaurant service charges but you can leave a little extra if you feel service warrants it.
If there is no service charge, the customer should consider leaving a 10% tip, but this is not obligatory. In bars, Italians often
leave small change as a tip, maybe only €0.10. Tipping taxi drivers is not common practice, but you are expected to tip the
porter at top-end hotels.
Moneychangers
You can change money in banks, at the post office or in a cambio (exchange office). Post offices and most banks are reliable
and tend to offer the best rates. Commission fluctuates and depends on whether you are changing cash or cheques.
Generally post office commissions are lowest and the exchange rate reasonable. The main advantage of exchange offices is
the longer hours they keep, but watch for high commissions and inferior rates.
Taxes & refunds
A value-added tax of around 21%, known as IVA (Imposta di Valore Aggiunto), is slapped onto just about everything in Italy. If
you are a non-EU resident and spend more than €155 on a purchase, you can claim a refund when you leave. The refund only
applies to purchases from affiliated retail outlets that display a ‘tax free for tourists’ (or similar) sign. You have to complete a
form at the point of sale, then get it stamped by Italian customs as you leave. At major airports you can then get an
immediate cash refund; otherwise it will be refunded to your credit card. For information, pick up a pamphlet on the scheme
from participating stores.
Accommodation (including hostels, cheap places) Italy is a country quite expensive.
Paying close attention, you can live with 30 euro per day but you have to sleep in hostels, to eat sandwiches and to avoid visit
museums.
If you sleep in an hotel and you have lunch in a restaurant you could live with about 50 euro per day.

Insurance issue and safety
Travel Insurance
A travel-insurance policy to cover theft, loss and medical problems is a good idea. It may also cover you for cancellation or
delays to your travel arrangements. Paying for your ticket with a credit card can often provide limited travel accident
insurance and you may be able to reclaim the payment if the operator doesn’t deliver.
Dangers & annoyances
It sometimes requires patience to deal with the Italian concept of service, which does not always seem to follow the maxim
that the customer is always right. While often courteous and friendly, some people in uniform or behind a counter (including
police officers, waiters and shop assistants) may regard you with supreme indifference.
Long queues are the norm in banks, post offices and government offices.
Theft
Pickpockets and bag-snatchers operate in most cities, but the most towns of the Marche Region are in general safe and
secure.
In case of theft or loss, always report the incident at the police station within 24 hours and ask for a statement, otherwise
your travel-insurance company won’t pay out.
Women travellers
The Marche Region is not a dangerous place for women to travel in. Clearly, as with anywhere in the world, women travelling
alone need to take certain precautions and be prepared for more than their fair share of unwanted attention.

Train
Pesaro, Fano and Marotta (three important village near the sea) are on the Bologna–Lecce train line.
There are hourly services from Pesaro to:
Ancona: about € 3,65/7,50 (economic class) - 60 minutes
Rimini: about € 3,60/7,00 - 30 minutes
Bologna: about € 10,00/20,00 (economic class) - 2 hours.
By train you can also reach easily:

You can buy the ticket in every railway station but it’s very important that you stamp your ticket using the yellow machine in

You will easily find a bus station which is 30 metres from the main exit of the Pesaro railway station (right side). You can buy
the ticket either in the ticket office or on the bus.
ATMA operates a service to Ancona (about 2 hours, four times daily).
Adriabus instead manage all local bus lines in order to allow people to move into the major cities (Pesaro, Fano, Urbino) or to
reach all villages of the Provincia.

Place of interest to visit
Urbino
The original capital of the Duchy of Montefeltro (35 km from Pesaro) extends across
the top of two hills. Its houses and churches are built down each hill as far Porta
Lavagine on the north-east slope and Porta Valbona to the south-west.
This is one of the major art towns in the world, both because of its history and for the
many buildings and works of art which are housed here. Its origins are extremely old
but documentation of its history begins only in the 3rd Century BC, when Urvinum
Mataurense received the title of Roman municipality (remains of its wall and theatre
still survive). Its strategic position proved to be a great advantage during the conflicts
of the feudal period, when the town allied itself with the Ghibellines. When Antonio
da Montefeltro repressed a revolt in Rome against the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa,
he was given the title of Count and appointed Imperial legate of Urbino in 1155. This
was the beginning of the link between the city and the Montefeltro dynasty, which
lasted, despite periods of conflict and strife, until the family died out. The first period
of artistic patronage was under Count Guidantonio, when the two Salimbeni brothers,
Lorenzo and Jacopo, from San Severino Marche, were commissioned to fresco the
Oratory of San Giovanni in 1416. They were followed by Ottaviano Nelli of Gubbio and
Antonio Alberti of Ferrara, who each carried out several works in Urbino. After the
death of Guidantonio (1443) and the murder of the young Oddantonio (1444), it was
under Federico II da Montefeltro, Count and then Duke, that Urbino reached its
greatest period of artistic splendour, particularly after the Duke had thwarted the
expansionist ambitions of Sigismondo Malatesta in 1463 and had established
territorial supremacy over the lands of Montefeltro. Under Duke Federico the
medieval residence of the Montefeltros was expanded and decorated, first by Luciano
Laurana and then by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, to become the splendid Palazzo
Ducale (Ducal Palace). This magnificent architectural masterpiece, with its twin towers ('Torricini') and inner courtyard, now
houses the prestigious Galleria Nazionale delle Marche which includes such masterpieces as Piero della Francesca's
"Flagellation" and "Madonna of Senigallia" and Raphael's "La Muta". The palace stands as an eternal monument to the
memory of Duke Federico, his son Guidubaldo and their splendid Court, with its fine rooms - from the 'Salone del Trono'

(Throne Room) to the unique 'Studiolo del Duca' panelled with splendid inlaid wood and decorated with portraits of famous
men. But walking around the hilly streets and alleyways of Urbino itself, there is still plenty of evidence of its long artistic and
cultural history - the neo-Palladian Cathedral, rebuilt by Valadier after the 1784 earthquake, the church of San Domenico,
with its magnificent portal, built in travertine stone, over which stands a copy of the lunette by Luca della Robbia, the
Medieval church San Francesco with its fine pointed Gothic bell tower and great altar-piece by Federico Barocci, the Oratory
of San Giuseppe with its famous 'Presepe' (Nativity Scene) by Brandani, Palazzo Albani (15th-18th centuries) and the nearby
Church of Santo Spirito (16th Century) and the birthplace of Raphael, which now houses the Accademia Raffaello Sanzio,
founded in 1869. Further up stands the Fortezza Albornoz. From its battlements we can look out over the twin towers of the
Ducal Palace, and across to the 15th Century church of San Bernardino, on one of the neighbouring hills, which houses the
Mausoleum of the Dukes. Below the town, at Borgo Mercatale, we can admire the semi-cylindrical spiral ramp which was
built in the 15th Century by Francesco di Giorgio Martini and, above it, the 19th Century Teatro 'R. Sanzio'. Higher still are the
apse, dome and bell tower of the Cathedral and, to the side of them, next to the large windows of the palace's hanging
garden, the magnificent western frontage of the Ducal Palace. Urbino also has its own independent university, with its
modern colleges, as well as the Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche (ISIA), which is housed in the magnificent former
monastery of Santa Chiara. Urbino is also home of the 'Scuola del Libro' which is famous as a producer of artistic talent in the
field of graphic design and various engraving techniques. Urbino celebrates La Festa del Duca each August - this is an
historical procession in period costume through the streets of the town centre, in which acrobats and fire-eaters take part,
and which culminates in a tournament held in the presence of the Ducal Court.
Gradara
One of the main attractions of the Marche Region is Gradara, a small village situated
just across the border between Emilia-Romagna and the Marche.
Surrounded by impressive city walls, the small town develops around its fortress,
which is enclosed by walls too. The Castle of Gradara, a military fortress situated on
the top of a panoramic hill, still retains evidences which bear witness to the historic
vicissitudes it experienced under the domination of the Malatesta, Sforza and Della
Rovere families.
The castle has a lot of suggestive spaces (Courtyard of Honor, Torture hall,
Sigismondo and Isotta’s living room, Lucrezia Borgia’s room, Putt’s bedroom, Council
Chamber, ect) but fame and fortune of fortress are related to the legendary and tragic love story between Paolo and
Francesca, who are famous all over the world for the lines Dante wrote about them in the Hell of his Divine Comedy.

Paolo and Francesca were two lovers who were killed by Giangiotto Malatesta,
husband of Francesca and brother of Paolo. The story, that actually happened, tells of
a deception by the father of Francesca da Polenta, Guido Minore, Lord of Ravenna
and Cervia, who offered his daughter's hand in marriage to Giovanni Malatesta, called
Giangiotto, an older, lame and ugly man.
Supported by the Malatesta family, he invited the young and handsome Paolo
Malatesta, the brother of Giangiotto, in Ravenna, where he accepted to be given as
the fiancé. On the wedding day Paolo made the promise of marriage on behalf of his
brother Giangiotto without the knowledge of the poor Francesca. Once the deception
was discovered, she resigned to her fate before falling in love and having an affair with the handsome Paolo. Caught by
Giangiotto while kissing, they were both murdered.
The last important restoration carried out in 1920 brought the castle back to its ancient magnificence.
Tourists can visit the Castle of Gradara, stroll along its embattled walls, admire the drawbridge and walk across its beautiful
courtyard, thus enjoying the fascination of all the historic periods and personalities which left their mark here.
Mondavio
Mondavio has one of the best preserved historic centre of the Marche Region. The main
monument is the Della Rovere’s Fortress, that was designed at the end of the Fifteenth
by Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
Inside the fortress there is the Historical Re-enactment Museum that propose scene of
Renaissance life. At the top floor there is an interesting armery while in the moat you can
find a unique and beautiful collection of siege and defense equipment.
In the main square there are the Town Hall and St Francesco’s Church in which there is a
museum.

Fano
Stands on the Adriatic coast (12 km south of Pesaro). The old town was built on the
flat coastal area, about 3km north of the mouth of the River Metauro. Behind the
town, on both sides of the valley, is a hilly backdrop which falls away to form a wide
plain.
Fano was originally known as Fanum Fortunae and governed over by Gaius Julius
Caesar and his troops in 45BC. It is here that the Flaminian Way, built in 218 BC,
reaches the sea from Rome. Later, the Emperor Augustus Caesar founded the colony
of Colonia Julia Fanestris, inhabited by the Pollia tribe, and fortified it by building a
sturdy wall (a part of which still survives) with defence towers and the Arch of Augustus (9 AD) with its three archways which
open onto the decumanus maximus. Some stretches of the roads which intersected each other to form the original street
plan still survive today in the oldest part of the town. During the 14th and 15th Centuries, these were extended towards the
south-west by an area known as the "Addizione Malatestiana". It is a city in which
every building bears witness to a particular period. After the Roman period, marked
by traces of the destroyed Basilica di Vitruvio, came the Byzantine period when Fano,
after its destruction by the Goths, was one of the five centres of the Maritime
Pentapolis. This was followed by the Middle Ages which was dominated by wars and
feuds aimed at the conquest of inland areas and castles. This led Fano to make an
alliance treaty with Venice (1140) to protect the city from the threats of neighbouring
cities. But hostilities continued. In 1164 and 1174 Emperor Federico Barbarossa led
two expeditions against Ancona during which, on both occasions, Fano made the best
that it could of the situation by playing the part of the faithful city and opening the
doors of its ancient Benedictine abbey of San Paterniano. Its conduct was rather
different seventy years later, in 1241, when the city became involved in wars begun
by the new emperor Federico II. This time it came under siege and had its surrounding
territory destroyed. Then came the wars between the Guelphs and Ghibellines and civil disputes which worsened with the
rivalry between the Del Cassero and Da Carignano families. These ended with the brutal assassination of Guido Del Cassero
and Angiolello Da Carignano by henchman of Malatestino Malatesta (1305). Buildings from this period include the
Romanesque Cathedral built by Magister Rainerius, with its splendid sculpted pulpit, the 14th Century Palazzo del Podestà by
Magister Paulutius, which now forms the facade of the 19th Century Teatro della Fortuna, designed by Luigi Poletti, and also
the former churches of San Francesco, San Domenico and Sant'Agostino.After various attempts by the Malatesta family to
take power, it was Galeotto Malatesta who was appointed Papal Vicar of Fano by Cardinal Egidio Albornoz - despite the fact

that he had been defeated by the troops of the same Cardinal Albornoz at the Battle of Paderno. This appointment took
place on the occasion when the "Parlamento della Marca" was convened to proclaim the Costituzioni Egidiane (1357). For
Fano, this marked a long period of Malatesta rule under Pandolfo III and then Sigismondo up until 1463, when Federico da
Montefeltro liberated Fano from the power of the Malatestas, bringing about the Libertas Ecclesiastica. From this period of
Malatesta rule, the city still retains its Rocca (or fortress), the splendid sarcophagi which today stand together under the
entrance porch of San Francesco, and the monumental Corte (courtyard) with its fine late-Gothic double windows and airy
Renaissance loggia, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1544. By this time the city had already been part of the Papal States for
several years, though surrounded by the lands of the Duke of Urbino (from Pesaro to Fossombrone and down to Senigallia),
and had suffered domination by Cesare Borgia, Lorenzo de Medici, and Costantino Comneno. From these stormy years there
remain within the city walls the new abbey of San Paterniano, together with the church and convent of Santa Maria Nuova
(into which the magnificent altarpieces by Santi and Perugino were moved some time after 1488), the convent and church of
San Michele with its splendid entranceway by Bernardino da Carona (1512) and the austere bastion by Sangallo, built to
defend the city and the coast against the threat of invasion from the Turks and Saracens. The city was now ruled by a Papal
Governor who was appointed annually, and was administered for over three centuries by an oligarchy of noble families who
set about building fine churches and family palazzi decorated by such illustrious artists as Ludovico Carracci, Guido Reni,
Domenichino, Guercino and Albani, as well as by Simone Cantarini of Pesaro, Gianfrancesco Guerrieri of Fossombrone and
(during the 18th Century) Sebastiano Ceccarini and Carlo Magini of Fano. The work of these artists is now also housed in the
Pinacoteca Civica (the Civic Art Gallery) in Palazzo Malatestiano and also the Art Gallery in the local branch of the Cassa di
Risparmio bank. Among other noteworthy works are the sumptuous Baroque interior
of the Philippine church of San Pietro in Valle, the Cappella Nolfi in the Cathedral, the
Biblioteca Federiciana established by Abbot Domenico Federici in 1681 and the first
Teatro della Fortuna (later destroyed) which was the work of the brilliant Fano stage
designer and technician Giacomo Torelli (1604-1678). The construction of the Porto
Borghese harbour by Gerolamo Rainaldi is also worthy of mention - this was the basic
structure which has been enlarged right up until today around the port and the canal,
with a new harbour presently in the process of completion. It now accommodates the
town's marine and fishing fleet as well as providing space for leisure boats. To the
west and east there are two separate beaches - the Lido and Sassonia beaches - which provide a popular tourist destination
during the summer. There are also many other resorts along this stretch of the coast from Fosso Sejore to Torrette, Ponte
Sasso and Marotta, as well as a modern hydrotherapy centre at the spa resort of Terme di Carignano.
The Monastery of Monte Giove is one of the points of interest in the surrounding district. This place of prayer and meditation
was built on the summit of Monte Giove in the early years of the 17th Century by the Calmaldolese Congregazione di Monte
Corona and today provides an ideal headquarters for the 'Itinerari e Incontri' Study Centre.

Pesaro
Stands on the alluvial coastal plain of the Adriatic, at the mouth of the River Foglia, between
the hills of Colle Ardizio to the south east and Colle San Bartolo to the north west. The area has
been inhabited since the 6th Century BC, when there was a harbour at the mouth of the
Pisaurus, (now called the River Foglia). Later the Roman colony of Pisaurum was established
here by Quintus Fabius Nobilior (184 BC). The walls were completed a decade later, in 174 BC.
These were rectangular in layout, following the lines of the grid-like street plan, which can still
be seen in the route taken by the streets of Via San Francesco-Corso XI Settembre and Via
Branca-Via Rossini. After a varied history, the city gradually fell into decay until it was
destroyed by the Gothic troops of King Vitiges (539 AD). Gradually rebuilt on the site of the
Roman settlement, it became part of the Byzantine Maritime Pentapolis, together with Rimini,
Fano, Senigallia and Ancona. Later, after a short period of Longobard rule, it was given by the
Franks to the Pope and thus became part of the lands belonging to the Roman Church (774
AD). In the first half of the 12th Century it became a Free City. This marked the beginning of
years of conflict with neighbouring towns (particularly Fano) as it attempted to expand its
territory. This continued until Malatestino Malatesta became Podestà in 1285, to be followed
by his son Giovanni (nicknamed "the Cripple", and betrayed husband of the famous Francesca
da Polenta, immortalised in Dante's tragic poem about the love between she and her brotherin-law Paolo. In 1304, Giovanni was succeeded by his brother Pandolfo I, followed in 1326 by
Malatesta Guastafamiglia, then in 1343 by Pandolfo II, a courageous sea captain under whose rule the Malatestas took the
title "Lords of Pesaro". The Malatestas were generous rulers during this period, as we can see today in the splendid Gothic
entrance to the Church of San Francesco (known also as Madonna delle Grazie) as well as the fine tomb of the Blessed
Michelina Metelli, who died in 1356. Pandolfo II, who was also a close friend of the poet Petrarch, died in 1373, leaving a
young son who became Lord of the City in 1386. It was he, known as Malatesta "dei sonetti", solder and scholar, who
followed the example of his father and commissioned the construction of the magnificent Gothic entrance portals of San
Domenico and Sant'Agostino and transformed his palace into a true noble court, thanks also to the contribution of his
cultured wife, Elisabetta Varano da Camerino. His death in 1429 led to the decline of the Pesaro branch of the Malatesta
family, when Galeazzo agreed by contract to hand the city over to Alessandro Sforza in 1445, to the wrath of his cousin
Sigismondo, Lord of Rimini and Fano. The Sforza rulers (Alessandro, Costanzo and Giovanni) commissioned Laurana to build
the aristocratic facade of the Palazzo Ducale (1461-1465). The also built the earliest part of the famous Villa Imperiale on the
nearby hill of Colle San Bartolo, which was later extended and decorated in the 16th Century by Gerolamo Genga and
numerous fine artists and craftsmen during the rule of the Della Rovere family. The Sforza family was also responsible for the
fine inlaid choir stalls in the church of Sant'Agostino and for the construction of the Rocca Costanza, the sturdy castle which

now houses the Pesaro Section of the State Archive. With the death of Giovanni Sforza, the unfortunate brother-in-law of
Cesare Borgia, forced to submit to his arrogant ambition after having married his sister Lucrezia, the government of Pesaro
passed to Francesco Maria I Della Rovere, nephew of Pope Julius II (1513). The Della Rovere family (Francesco Maria I,
Guidubaldo II and Francesco Maria II) was responsible for the construction the vast pentagonal city wall, of which only the
fine Bastion in the Orti Giuli gardens and the adjoining Porta Rimini survive, as well as the splendid church of San Giovanni
Battista, a masterpiece by Gerolamo Genga. The family also extended the Palazzo Ducale by adding various apartments, built
the octagonal church of Sant'Ubaldo and the fine Chiesa del Nome di Dio, as well as constructing the harbour and canal
(which was later to be rebuilt by Gianfrancesco Buonamici in the 18th Century. It was under the rule of the Della Rovere
family that Pesaro became part of the Duchy of Urbino, becoming effectively its capital until it passed to the Papal state
(under Pope Urban VIII) on the death of Duke Francesco Maria II in 1631 (his young son Federico Ubaldo died before him,
leaving him without a direct heir). From that period onwards Pesaro, together with Urbino, became the capital of the Papal
Legation for Pesaro and Urbino. It was governed by a Cardinal Legate until the Napoleonic period and, after the Restoration,
up until the Unification of Italy (1861). The city had many illustrious personalities during this period. Abbot Annibale of the
Olivierian Abbots (1708-1709) was founder of the library and museum of the same name which is now housed in the 17th
Century Palazzo Almerici. Gianandrea Lazzarini (1710-1809) was an architect, painter and scholar who designed Palazzo
Olivieri (now the home of the Conservatorio Musicale "G. Rossini") and decorated several of its rooms, as well as the noble
Palazzo Toschi-Mosca and the former Diocesan Seminary. Domenico Mazza (1755-1847) was also from Pesaro. It was he who
began the splendid historical collection of ceramics which is now housed in the Ceramics Museum - this forms part of the
Civic Museum, together with the Art Gallery which includes that great masterpiece, "La Pala di Pesaro" (the Pesaro
Altarpiece) by Giovanni Bellini ("Giambellino"). The 4th-5th Century mosaic pavements under the Cathedral (with 12th
Century facade and redecorated 19th Century interior) are in the process of being restored. When work is complete it will be
quite unique, both for the vastness of its tessellated area as well as for its perfect state of conservation. Another important
place to visit is the small museum in the house where Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was born. The 19th century Teatro "G.
Rossini", designed by Pietro Ghinelli and inaugurated in 1818 is dedicated to this great opera composer. It is also the home of
the annual Rossini Opera Festival.The ancient walled towns of Novilara (215 m) and Candelara (204 m) also stand in the
Pesaro district, on the hills to the right of the Foglia Valley, and look out from their battlements over the fine panorama. An
early necropolis, of Piceno origin and dating back to the 8th-6th Century BC, came to light near Novilara during the last
century.

Are there any days off expected?
In Italy people usually work five days a week, from Monday to Friday, and eight hours a day.
