FOREWORD
The OFC U-17 Championship is a significant competition for Oceania because it introduces a whole new crop of young players who
will be the future stars of football in our region.
We often see the most pure form of the game at this age group as
players are eager to attack and have little fear of making mistakes.
Oceania’s future depends on the development of our youth and,
after a strong display of skill and technical aptitude at the OFC U17 Championship New Zealand 2009, we can look forward to
more success on the world stage.
This year’s championship featured New Caledonia, New Zealand,
Tahiti and Vanuatu.
For the players, there was no lack of motivation as they strived to win the 2009 edition and book
a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Nigeria. Representing Oceania at the FIFA tournament is
not only a huge honour but also an opportunity to shine on the world stage.
North Harbour Stadium provided a wonderful backdrop for the event and thanks must be extended to the many volunteers and organisers who worked to deliver a memorable OFC U-17
Championship.
I would also like to thank the tournament participants and national associations for their continued
commitment to football development.
All the players performed to the best of their abilities and I was pleased to see that each match
was played in the spirit of fair play.

GENERAL ORGANISATION
The OFC U-17 Championship 2009 had been scheduled to take place in Fiji but flood damage forced
Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) to change the venue to New Zealand. Initially, seven entries were
received with New Caledonia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Vanuatu confirming their participation following
the venue change.
North Harbour Stadium was chosen to be the setting for the championship with the week’s six matches
played on two fields - the artificial ‘No 2’ pitch and the picturesque ‘No 1’ natural pitch. Despite heavy
rain on Match Day 1, the natural turf stayed in good condition
throughout the week.
OFC was responsible for the delivery of the event and received
welcome support from New Zealand Football. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) ensured each match kicked off on time and
that all run schedules were followed in a timely fashion.
The OFC Technical Study Group, consisting of OFC Technical Director Jim Selby and assistant FIFA Development Officer Patrick
Jacquemet, were charged with the responsibility of analysing
each match as part of the confederation’s ongoing commitment to
analysing technical and physiological standards within the OFC
region.
The recruitment of volunteers in areas such as security, logistics
and ball kids proved vital in terms of the delivering of a professional event. Due to a lack of fixed buildings at the venue, extra
help was needed to erect the various marquees that were set up
on both fields.
Special thanks must go to the volunteers for their tireless efforts
in what proved to be challenging weather conditions. Also thanks
to New Zealand Football for their hard work and commitment.

MEDIA AND MARKETING
An exciting new partnership between Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and Radio New Zealand
International (RNZI) resulted in extensive coverage of the OFC U-17 Championship.
In exchange for the exclusive rights, RNZI broadcast coverage and commentaries through live internet
streaming as well as analogue and 19 metre band formats. Radio Vanuatu took the commentary, which
was provided by former OFC Media Officer Gordon Watson, but with the lack of French commentary
there was not the same pick up in New Caledonia and Tahiti.
As is common in New Zealand, the tournament was initially met with indifference from local media but on
the final day there were a number of key journalists present to witness the Kiwis qualify for the FIFA U-17
World Cup. This included representatives from TV3 and Prime TV plus major New Zealand newspapers
New Zealand Herald and New Zealand Truth. A number of photographers were also present on Match
Day 3.
External media crews and staff from all participating associations travelled to New Zealand for the OFC
U-17 Championship 2009 and this provided additional coverage. The erecting of temporary scaffolding
assisted the TV production for all visiting crews,
including TNTV’s Olivier Huc from Tahiti and
Harry Atisson, who recently started production
of Vanuatu’s first football show.
As always, OFC Media provided extensive coverage throughout the championship, including
live text updates on www.oceaniafootball.com

MATCH OFFICIALS
OFC is committed to developing world-class match officials and that development programme
was furthered in Auckland as the top officials from around the region gathered for the OFC U17 Championship New Zealand 2009.
Just prior to the championship, all participants took part in the OFC Elites Referees and Assistants
course aimed at improving standards and increasing the professionalism of Oceania referees.
The course was presented by Massimo Raveino, Neil Poloso and special guest Toshio Utsomo,
FIFA Instructor from Japan. Referees were also required to undergo the OFC - FIFA Referees Fitness Test designed to simulate match conditions by combining a speed test with interval and endurance training.

STORY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP
Match Day 1
TAHITI AND NEW ZEALAND POWER THROUGH THE WET
Tahiti opened their campaign with a comprehensive 5-2 win over francophone rivals New Caledonia
while New Zealand secured a solid 3-0 win over New Caledonia in wet conditions at North Harbour Stadium.
After an evenly matched first half, Tahiti were able to take a 2-1 lead into halftime as midfielder Kaurani
Voirin scored from the penalty spot just before the break.
New Caledonia started strongly early in the second
half and levelled the scores for the second time in the
47th minute through Stephane Wahaga.
But disaster then struck for the New Caledonians in
the 56th minute when Patrick Quaze received a second yellow card and was sent from the field.
From the resulting free kick just outside the box,
Voirin scored his second goal of the match to reestablish his team’s lead.
Tahiti then took control of the remainder of the match
adding two more goals through Heitini Tupea and
Heirarii Tavanae.
New Zealand got off to an excellent start against Vanuatu in the
afternoon match, Jamie Doris scoring the opening goal in just the
ninth minute.
A second came only five minutes later as striker Andrew Milne
latched onto a long goal kick clearance and finished inside the
box.
The second half was evenly matched with both sides going close
to scoring on multiple occasions.
Defender Gordon Murie ensured that the hosts had the final say
with New Zealand’s third strike in added time.

STORY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP
Match Day 2
TAHITI AND NEW ZEALAND BREAK CLEAR
Match Day 2 of the championship saw Tahiti continue its strong goal-scoring form with a 4-1 win over
Vanuatu while New Zealand took a workman-like 2-0 win over New Caledonia with both matches played
in fine, sunny conditions on North Harbour’s artificial pitch.
Vanuatu started promisingly against their more fancied opponents Tahiti with striker Moken Maltuntung scoring in the
12th minute after a swift counter-attacking movement.
Tahitian coach Lionel Charbonnier gave his team a fiery revup at halftime and it bore fruit just five minutes after the
break with Teaonui Tehau equalising for his team. With just
over an hour played Heiarii Tavanae gave his team the advantage with his second goal of the tournament. Tahiti’s fortunes continued to improve as Vanuatu’s Fabian Namuly
Oben was shown a second yellow card in the 75th minute.
Tahiti was again able to bolster their for-and-against differential in the remainder of the match, adding another two
goals to blow the score out to 4-1.
In the afternoon game, New Zealand had to battle hard to beat a dogged and organised New Caledonian side.
After a scoreless first half, the deadlock was finally
broken in the 58tth minute by Jack Hobson-McVeigh
who scored from a penalty won by Thomas Spragg.
Andrew Milne notched New Zealand’s second goal in
the 87th minute, and his second goal of the tournament, when he pounced on a rebound from the New
Caledonian goalkeeper after a strong initial shot
from midfielder Cameron Lindsay.
Match Day 2 results

Raimana Dahlluin 77’) Vanuatu 1 (Moken Maltungtung 12’) (Halftime 1-0 Vanuatu)

STORY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP
Match Day 3
NEW ZEALAND SHUT OUT TAHITI TO BOOK WORLD CUP SPOT
The host nation stepped up on Match Day 3 to seal their Nigeria World Cup berth with a dominant 2-0
win over Tahiti in the tournament’s crunch match.
In the wooden spoon match, New Caledonia found enough motivation to beat Vanuatu 1-0 in a disappointingly flat morning fixture.
New Zealand shrugged off the pressure of a one-goal deficit coming into the final to dominate Tahiti in
both halves - despite having influential midfielder Jack Hobson McVeigh sent off for a second yellow card
shortly before halftime.
The game’s first goal came on 28 minutes as midfielder Zane Sole powered an uncontested far-post
header into Tahiti’s net from a Hobson-McVeigh corner kick. Just three minutes later, New Zealand had
their crucial second goal when Milne pounced on a low cross just outside the six-yard box and deflected
the ball past the Tahitian goalkeeper.
Tahiti struggled to compete with a tireless New Zealand midfield in the second half and found no chinks in
the host’s fired-up defence. In a revealing statistic, Kiwi goalkeeper Corey Turepa was forced to make
only one difficult save during the entire 90-plus minutes.
New Caledonia’s third place finish was sealed with a Jules Paturel goal after three minutes. In a game
that failed to reach the standards both teams had set in previous round-robin matches, New Caledonia
dominated possession throughout and generated superior goal-scoring opportunities against a tired looking Vanuatu side.
Match Day 3 Results

(Halftime 1-0)
New Zealand (Zane Sole 28’, Andrew Milne 31’) Tahiti
