Zawody w pięcioboju nowoczesnym trwają cały dzień, od rana do wieczora, i obejmują cztery kolejne konkurencje. Celem pracy było zbadanie zmian stężeń we krwi kortyzolu (C), testosteronu (T), hormonu wzrostu (GH) i mleczanu, wywołanych długotrwałym stresem startowym, u zawodników i zawodniczek pięcioboju nowoczesnego. Materiał i metody. Polscy sportowcy, czterech zawodników i cztery zawodniczki, uczestniczyli w międzynarodowych zawodach pięcioboju nowoczesnego rozgrywanych w Polsce. Krew kapilarną pobrano przed i po szermierce, pływaniu, konkurencji połączonej (bieg + strzelanie) i jaździe konnej. Następnie w osoczu oznaczono C, T, GH, a we krwi La. Ponadto określono deklarowaną ocenę odczuwanego wysiłku po szermierce, pływaniu i konkurencji połączonej. Wyniki. W porównaniu do wyników notowanych u mężczyzn, u zawodniczek stwierdzono znacząco wyższe średnie stężenia C i GH, ale podobne reakcje mleczanu. Każdy wysiłek wywoływał wzrost stężenia C i GH. Wnioski. Udział w zawodach pięcioboju nowoczesnego (trwających cały dzień i złożonych z kilku wysiłków) modyfikuje hormonalny i metaboliczny status u zawodników i zawodniczek. Płciowy dymorfizm przejawia się różnym zachowaniem C, T i GH u zawodników i zawodniczek. Summary 5823 4 0 33 is c Word count: Tables: Figures: References: y is - for pe Background. Competition in the sport of modern pentathlon lasts the whole day, from morning to evening, and comprises of four successive events. This study aimed to explore changes in blood cortisol (C), testosterone (T), growth hormone (GH) and lactate (La) levels triggered by the prolonged competitive stress in male and female athletes. Material and methods. Four male and four female Polish competitors participated in an international tournament of modern pentathlon. Capillary blood was drawn before and after the fencing, swimming, combined event and riding events. Plasma C, T, GH and La were subsequently determined. Ratings of perceived exertions were also declared after the fencing, swimming and combined events. Results. The female competitors demonstrated significantly higher mean levels of C and GH, but similar La responses in comparison to their male counterparts. Each type of event triggered an acute rise in C and GH. In males, T tended to decrease over time and female T levels did not show this change. Excluding early morning hours, C levels remained high across the day and did not show any diurnal rhythm. Post effort La levels indicated that the most intensive efforts were swimming and combined event. Conclusions. Participation in a modern pentathlon competition (lasting the whole day and consisted of several efforts) led to modifications in the hormonal and metabolic status in male and female athletes. Sexual dimorphism was also demonstrated, as indicated by different behaviors in C, T and GH. op This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Istnieją sprzeczne doniesienia odnośnie do związku pomiędzy hormonalnym statusem a zależnym od dyscypliny wynikiem sportowym, nawet w czasie zawodów o podobnej strukturze zadania. Ostatnie badania Observations of temporary changes in selected blood indices are often used to evaluate psycho-physical stress in athletic competition. These data, coupled with information on psychological state and outcome, provide insight on which factors may contribute to an athlete’s proficiency in practicing his/her sport, and their ability to cope with stress. Based on a cross-sectional study of elite athletes during competition, it was found that the most common blood indices are cortisol (C), testosterone (T) growth hormone (GH) and blood lactate (La) [1]. There are conflicting reports about the connection between hormonal status and sport-related outcomes, even during competitions of similar task structures. For example, in kick-boxing hormonal status did not differentiate winners and losers [2], while in the other combat sports [3,4] and marathon runners [5], winning athletes did display higher plasma C and T. Some studies focused on gender differences in the hormonal responses to a competition. Contradictory results were reported depending the sporting discipline. Male and female runners are also differ when comparing their T responses to competition over a mild distance. The males did however demonstrate a lower rate of T secretion after competition, while no such pattern was found in females [6]. In other work, a rowing ergometer competition had a minor (nonsignificant) effect on T in both sexes, whilst C was elevated considerably post-event and this response was stronger in females, especially in novice ones [7]. In badminton players, games won were associated with higher post-event T in both men and women, while loses tended to decrease T [8]. Similar T responses to the matches were observed among male ice hockey players [9,10]. Interestingly, “passive” participation in a competition also affects the hormonal system. Male hockey players showed significant rise (by 42-44%) in T when watching a video of a successful match, but watching a defeat or neutral video had no such effect [11]. Various hormonal responses to repeated bouts of exercise have been noted. Among male athletes, each repeated bout triggered a rise in C and T; however, the magnitude of T response to a successive bout was lower compared to one that followed a previous one of the same modality. Hence, during a series of successive bouts, the time course of T declined over time [12-14]. There are few sporting disciplines, where a competition consists of a series of successive efforts of different intensities, durations and task structures. One of them is the modern pentathlon, where competition lasts an entire day (from the morning to the evening) and comprises of 4 separate events as follows: fencing (épée) struggles, each lasting 1 minute against all the other competitors, 200 m free style swimming, a show of horse riding over a 400 m course with 12-15 obstacles and a combined event consisted of 3/4 pistol shooting sessions interspersed by runs, 3x1 km/4x800 m. The combined event is a typical dual conflict task (higher speed of running or better accuracy shooting) that imposes the pacing strategy. Running speed during four stages, each of 800 m was similar, and a high peak lactate response (13.6±1.5 mmol /L) was observed after the 4th stage is c op y is for pe rso na lu se on ly - dis tr ibu tio np roh ibit ed . Zmiany stężenia we krwi wybranych hormonów wywołane długotrwałym stresem startowym 2 [15]. Recently, gradual increases in blood lactate and heart rate were documented between series stages without a change in shooting performance [16]. A prior study showed that only shooting level, its time and accuracy contributed to final performance during this event, while running velocity did not distinguish athletes of lower and higher skills [17]. Knowledge about the behaviour of hormones and blood lactate during the pentathlon events are lacking. It is also unclear as to whether male and female athletes may differ in their competition profiles. Therefore, the study aim was to examine how each of successive event affects plasma “stress hormones”, blood lactate levels and perceptual effort in male and female athletes practicing the modern pentathlon competition. Materiał i metody Material and methods Badana grupa należała do elity polskich sportowców (zawodnicy n=4, zawodniczki n=4). Brali oni udział w otwartych polskich mistrzostwach pięcioboju nowoczesnym, tj. turnieju międzynarodowym rozgrywanym w Polsce. Kolejność rozgrywanych konkurencji była następująca: szermierka, pływanie, konkurencja połączona (kombinacja) i cross jeździecki. Każdy zawodnik stoczył 41 walk, a zawodniczka 36 walk szermierczych. The order of the events was as follows: fencing, swimming, combined event and riding. Each male participant completed 41 × 1-minute fencing struggles, while the number of the struggles for the each female amounted to 36. The first event started around 7:30 am for both sexes and lasted longer (by 2 h) in the male group. Brakuje wiedzy odnośnie do zachowania hormonów i mleczanu we krwi w czasie zawodów w pięcioboju nowoczesnym. Obie wspomniane konkurencje wywołały najwyższy wzrost La i znaczące podniesienie C i GH. The patterns of C and GH fluctuations across the four events was similar for both sexes, with regards to directional changes, but not their magnitude. Statistical analysis showed significantly higher mean blood C determined in the females (766±261 nmol/L) than males (636±222 nmol/L). Similar sex-related differences in GH were found, with higher GH level in females (10.43±18.77) than (4.95±8.26 ng/ml). Post swim and post combined event blood La in male and female contestants did not differ. During fencing, preevent (a1) C was very high and decreased post-event (b1) by 30%, but that change was not significant. Swimming and combined event induced the highest rise in La and significant C and GH elevations. Interestingly, horse riding also triggered C rises of 54 and 68% respectively in male and female contestants, but these changes were not significant. Moreover, after horse riding La and GH were somewhat higher in females than males. These differences, although not significant, suggest higher females` susceptibility to stress accompanying the riding. When all eight time points were considered, the dependence of C on the time of the day (TD) may be expressed by the linear regression of the following formula: C1=3480.0523.06*TD. The value of that function slightly declines with time. Contrary to that shape, when the C recorded at the first time point (a1) was excluded from the calculus, the linear regression is given by the formula: C2=546.68+9.946* TD, and showed slightly elevated C with TD. Similar procedures was conducted for T at eight time points gives the regression equation: T=110.770.77*TD and T=4.557-0.0202*TD for the male and female groups. Hence, in males, T tended to decrease with time, while in females, in practice, T showed slightly fluctuation without a clear trend to the change in time. Both sexes were differ when comparing their behaviors of T in response to the events. Females demonstrated a very small T elevation (around by 20%) following fencing, swimming, combined event, and somewhat lower rise (by 10%) after horse riding. In males, T rises of 48%, 27% and 23% occurred after swimming, combined event and horse riding, respectively, whilst after fencing T decreased itself by 22%. In both sexes, C, GH and La increased significantly after the most vigorous events, swimming and combined. As was shown in Table 1, the intermission periods between events were sufficient for La normalization before consecutive events. In male participants, the final places on a ranking list and total scores expressed in points, as follows: 1 (1498 p), 3 (1469 p), 5 (1461 p) and 9 (1439 p). The corresponding performances in females were: 1 (1398 p), 2 (1384 p), 4 (1365 p) and 11 (1302 p). In males, but not in females, points obtained after fencing, swimming and combined were positively related to RPE (Borg points) and post efforts blood La, while there were no significant correlations between the RPE, athletic outcomes and hormonal parameters. There were no sex-related differences in rating of perceived exertion. y is for pe rso na lu ły późnym wieczorem, warto byłoby sprawdzić, czy C i T obniżały się zgodnie z dziennym rytmem. Wartość ta jest 2-krotnie niższa od maksymalnej To date, the effect of fencing competition on acute changes in blood indices is very poorly recognized. A study conducted in the 1980s showed excitation of sympatho-adrenergic system [18]. Mean peak La following three consecutive 3-min fencing bouts, with rest intervals of 1 min, was 6.9 mmol/L [19]. That value was two-fold higher than the individual maximal La noted by after the last 1-minute contest. This diffe- is c op Dyskusja Th This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Changes of levels selected hormones in blood caused by the prolonged competitive stress 5 se on ly - dis tr ibu tio np roh ibit ed . rence suggests the effect of fencing time structure, work-to-rest ratio. Interestingly, the C decline was observed by us only after fencing, while the other events triggered a rise in hormones. It is important to consider the specifics of C behavior occurring in neutral condition over a day (the diurnal rhythm). We postulated that the diurnal rhythm could may mask the C responses to exercises in our experiment, especially, in the morning hours. At that time C demonstrates a biphasic and non-linear change as follows: steep increase within the 30-50 min after awakening (the symptom known as awakening C response), followed by a sharp decline over the next 2-3 hrs, and next a more mild decrease up to the late afternoon [20,21]. Hence, we suspect that the pre-fencing blood sample corresponded to an awakening peak C, while the post fencing samples were drown when C markedly decreased according to the diurnal rhythm. This highlights problems with interpreting C reactivity in humans, who are exposed to an acute stimulus appear when the magnitude of C changes at neutral condition is unknown. Of interest, during the next events C positively responded to the efforts and the effect of the diurnal rhythm was not as dominant, as observed in the morning hours. Despite this, the average time course of C from noon to the evening hours did not decrease, therefore, which suggests an abolishment of the diurnal rhythm in the second part of the day. That was due to stress expose during swimming, combined and riding. A similar lack of diurnal rhythm in salivary C was noted during forenoon and afternoon competitive efforts among male and female gymnastics [22]. Testosterone levels in the female contestants were on average 10 times lower than in males. This is a well-known symptom of sexual dimorphism and thus, we decided to omit statistical comparisons. In this study, the T level was relatively stable in females, but declined in males across the whole tournament. To elucidate the T change in the males, we have to remember the diurnal rhythm of T, which occurs in a similar direction to C, but at a reduced magnitude. However, longer exposure to high C may in part inhibit T biosynthesis in the testis and to enhance the manifestation of the diurnal rhythm of T. It is hard to evaluate how the two factors contribute to the observed T reduction among male pentathlon athletes, but a lowered T response to vigorous and repeated efforts was demonstrated also other male athletes [12-14]. Apart from La, the most sensitive blood variable was GH. The relative increases in this variable were much greater than C. There are many factors affecting the GH responses to an exertion, such as training status and the type of effort performed. After short-lasting anaerobic exertions (Wingate), sprinters demonstrated higher GH responses comparing to endurance-trained runners [23]. Attenuated response of GH to resistance training was noted after a series of sprints [24], or when endurance exercise was performed 60 min previously [25]. That phenomenon appear to be due to higher FFA induced by prior exercise preceding the main tests, as there is well-documented negative feedback regarding exercise GH response and pre-effort FFA [26,27]. Our observations of different GH responses are in accordance with those widely reported by other investigator among untrained and athletes [28-30]. lu rso na pe for y is op is c Th This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Podobny brak przejawu rytmu C w próbkach śliny odnotowano w odpowiedzi na przed- i popołudniowe wysiłki u kobiet i mężczyzn w czasie zawodów w gimnastyce [22]. - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Obmiński Z. i wsp. Zmiany stężenia we krwi wybranych hormonów wywołane długotrwałym stresem startowym 6 Ograniczenia projektu Study limitations Trudno wyjaśnić wywołane wysiłkami zachowanie C i T w przedziale czasu, bez uwzględnienia dziennych rytmów. Jak wspomniano, u obu płci zmiany w ciągu dnia były wyraźniejsze dla C niż T. Do tych zawiłości należałoby dodać wpływ wysiłków na zmiany objętości krwi (ΔPV). Zazwyczaj względna wielkość tych zmian nie przekracza kilkunastu procent, dlatego można je pominąć w dyskusji nad reakcjami C i GH, ale ΔPV może maskować reakcje T. Elucidation of the exercise-induced behaviour of C and T occurring within wide time interval is difficult, without taking into consider diurnal rhythms. As was mentioned earlier, in both sexes blood C and T demonstrated changes across a day and these changes were clearer for C than T. The effect of physical effort on plasma volume shifts (ΔPV) adds to these complexities. Usually, the magnitude of these changes do not exceed more than a dozen percents; hence, this might be ignored when discussing the C and GH responses, but ΔPV may mask T responses. tio np roh ibit ibu dis tr ly - 1. How exercise affects anabolic status in both sexes should be considered. To elucidate that issue, changes in anabolic hormones (GH, T and insulin) and that of catabolic hormones (i.e. cortisol), were recorded after repeated sprints. Females elicited similar exercise responses of the catabolic hormone as males. In females, the GH and insulin responses were higher, and T tended to increase, while in males T tended to decrease [31]. These differences showed that based only on a T/C ratio, the rating of post-effort blood anabolic–catabolic status among both sexes may not be fully accurate. Significant relationships between La and GH in males and females show that magnitude of the hormone responses strongly depended on exercise intensity and energy expenditure [32,33]. The underlying cause of the weaker relationship between RPE and La in females is less clear. se This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. U kobiet odpowiedzi GH i insuliny były wyższe, a T wykazywał tendencję do wzrostu, podczas gdy u mężczyzn do spadku [31]. - This copy is for personal use only - distribution prohibited. Obmiński Z. et al.
