BYDGOSZCZ LIFE TAKES ON COLOUR WEEKEND BYDGOSZCZ. LIFE TAKES ON COLOUR . Bydgoszcz, the capital, and also the largest city of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province, is the eighth largest city in Poland with about 360 thousand residents and over 665 years of history. The city is beautifully situated on the Brda and the Vistula Rivers and the Bydgoszcz Canal. BYDGOSZCZ FOR THE WEEKEND Bydgoszcz impresses tourists with the Brda River and canals that intersect the city centre. The city has been constantly turning its face to the water. It is in the immediate vicinity of the Brda River that most of the everyday, cultural, sporting and business life of the city goes on. The Old Market, Mill Island, the eighteenth-century granaries, the Gothic Cathedral of St. Martin and St. Nicholas, Opera Nova, the modern Sports and Entertainment Hall "Łuczniczka", almost all the important monuments and symbols of the city are situated by the river. One of the symbols of Bydgoszcz “The Archer Lady” by Ferdinand Lepcke. 01 Bydgoszcz is a perfect place for spending a weekend, no matter whether you are travelling alone, with family or friends. The city offers excellent hotels. Guests can choose from modern and historic buildings, three, four and five star hotels are located in the heart of the city. The centre of Bydgoszcz is full of restaurants, pubs, clubs and cafes. In the Old Market you can taste specialties of various cuisines: Italian, Greek, Polish, Old Polish, Turkish, you can try molecular dishes, great pancakes and a meal in total darkness. While strolling through the old town, you should try some of the several kinds of beer that are brewed in the interiors of one of the premises located beside Mill Island. Bydgoszcz is proud to have some very interesting museums. One should certainly visit the European Centre of Money, the so-called Leon Wyczółkowski’s House, both on the Mill Island, Exploseum situated in the Bydgoszcz Primeval Forest and the Museum of Land Army Forces in Gdańska Street. The city on the Brda River boasts great musical traditions and has a lot to offer to music lovers. A concert in the Pomeranian Philharmonic Hall, performance in the Opera Nova or an evening in one of the many music clubs in Bydgoszcz are perfect ways to spend some free time in the city. When planning an evening in Bydgoszcz, do not forget about the well-recognised in the country Teatr Polski – the Polish Theatre. ? DID YOU KNOW THAT…? The 18th meridian of eastern longitude runs through Bydgoszcz. The meridian crosses almost through the centre of the Old Market Square, and connects Bydgoszcz with such cities as Stockholm and Cape Town. The most characteristic feature of the market is the massive Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom, commemorating the region's victims of Hitler's and Stalin’s crimes. In the Old Market one can also find charming 19 th c. houses, interesting building of the municipal library and one of the oldest pharmacies in the city. In the window of tenement house No. 15 we may see a famous wizard – Master Twardowski. In the south-west corner of the square we can obtain information about the city in the Bydgoszcz Information Centre. The oldest church in the city, the late Gothic Cathedral of St. Martin and St. Nicholas, occupying the north-west corner of the Market Square is a place that cannot be omitted on our sightseeing route. Only a few meters to the west of the Old Market, in the bend of the Brda River, there is Mill Island, a unique 6-hectare oa si s of gre e n e r y i n th e ci t y ce ntre. Wh i l e walk ing aro und the island, we can visit some of the many museums located in 19 th- century mills and granaries. One of the most charming parts that can be seen from the island is the Bydgoszcz Venice, a complex of 19 th century buildings emerging directly from the currents of the Brda Młynówka. At the Fish Market (Rybi Rynek), just a few steps away from the Old Market to the east, there is a stop of one of the major attractions of the city, a water tram. St. Martin and St. Nicolas Cathedral. Brda River, Rybi Rynek (Fish Market). 04 New City The New City of Bydgoszcz is a very extensive (and almost entirely preserved) quarter of the city dating from the late 19th and early 20th century. It stretches east from the railway station. Here you will find beautiful tenement houses and villas designed by the best architects of the time from Bydgoszcz and Germany. The most interesting structures are situated along the main thoroughfare – Gdańska St. (e.g. the famous "Pod Orłem Hotel"). It is advisable to start sightseeing at Wolności Square and the charming Casmir the Great Park with its unquestionable pride, the "Deluge" fountain-monument. Then, it is worthwhile to go north and visit the so-called Music District, which is a park surrounded by Art Nouveau buildings in the vicinity of the Pomeranian Philharmonic Hall, the Academy of Music and the Polish Theatre - opposite which there is the slender sculpture of the "Archer Lady”. In close proximity to the Music District to the west there is Cieszkowskiego Street, which is a complex of buildings that are the pearls of Bydgoszcz architecture and to the south east Sielanka - a villa garden city with the monumental Vincent de Paul Basilica. The Archer Lady A fragment of ”the Deluge” fountain. 05 SURROUNDINGS OF THE CITY Just 10 km east of Bydgoszcz there is the beautiful Palace and Park Complex of Ostromecko. Among the well-kept lawns of the historical park one can easily see two palaces: a 19th century neo-classical one and an older one in Saxony rococo style that is picturesquely situated on a hill, which offers lovely views of the park and the valley of the Vistula River. The complex, carefully restored in recent years, now belongs to the City of Bydgoszcz. The “new” palace houses a restaurant and a hotel and is regularly used as a concert venue, including events organised by the Pomeranian Philharmonic. In the neighbourhood of the park there is a gothic church from the first half of the 15th century. A little further than Ostromecko, north-east of Bydgoszcz, there is a city situated on nine hills – Chełmno. Chełmno is worth visiting for its many gothic monuments, including the 13th century Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which are perfectly preserved (almost in their original shape), the Medieval city walls and the exceptional beauty of the Renaissance Town Hall. In Chrystkowo (about 35 km north of Bydgoszcz) we will come across a unique Mennonite cottage from 1770 with arcades, monumental thatched roof with a stork's nest on top. The cottage, which formerly belonged to Dutch settlers - Mennonites, is now a museum and training centre for the Chełmiński and Nadwiślański Park Complex. Another place worth visiting is Koronowo, a town located about 20 km north of Bydgoszcz, with a well-known post-Cistercian complex of buildings from the early 14th century that includes a gothic parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To the north of the town there is an artificial water reservoir called Zbiornik Koronowski, located among forests and in the immediate vicinity of Tuchola, it is a great place for water tourism, sailing and canoeing. ? DID YOU KNOW THAT…? The Sigismund III Vasa 100-ducat coin, which was minted in 1621 in the Bydgoszcz Mint, was the first Polish coin to be sold for more than a million dollars, or more precisely for $ 1,380,000, which made it the most expensive coin in Polish history. "Myślęcinek", a large park situated just a few kilometres from the centre of Bydgoszcz, is a special place for all those who like cycling, horse-riding, hiking, fishing and skiing. Everyone will find something for themselves. Lakes, forests, numerous bike routes, zoo, golf course, vast botanical garden, amusement park, skatepark, are only some of the many attractions of "Myślęcinek".
