Basically, do we choose God’s love or do we choose the
worldly possessions?
The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is a concrete way to
chose to give of our blessings and participate in God’s
love. The funds raised through the Appeal support
programs that feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.

REFLEKSJE EWANGELICZNE
Nie zmieniać Bożego Prawa
There's the old joke about the fourth grader
who had just memorized the Ten Commandments. He
was very proud of his accomplishment since he had
studied hard and had managed to recite them all
without a single mistake. When his mom came to pick
up him and his younger brother from religion class the
two were standing together on the curb. The younger
brother was shaking and sobbing. When mom enquired
what had happened, the younger brother pointed to
the older and said that he had been punched by him.
The mom turned to the fourth grade boy and asked,
"Didn't you just learn the commandments? You got
them all correct, but now look what you did to your
brother. What does the fifth commandment say?"
To which the fourth grader replied, "The fifth
commandment is, 'You shall not kill.' And I didn't kill
him. I just socked him really good!"
Of course it is precisely this kind of literalism
that Jesus expects his followers to leave behind. In the
Sermon on the Mount, he is teaching his disciples,
those who want to live by his words. Again and again
in his discourse, Jesus asks his followers to move to
a higher ethic by saying, "You have heard it said?
But I say to you?" Each time, Jesus proposes moving
beyond the strict limit of the law to a fuller
understanding of the concept. And that's where it can
get difficult.
The fourth grader's behavior was clearly
unacceptable, even according to the common
understanding of what is required by the fifth
commandment. But what is asked of the followers of
Jesus is so much more. (Just wait till we get to next
week's Gospel!) As Christians, we are asked by Jesus
to live beyond the law. We are asked to see the law
not as a minimal requirement for what we shouldn't
do, but as an invitation to extend the boundaries of
what we should.
Prawo ustanowione przez ludzi można i trzeba
nieustannie doskonalić. Tego wymaga życie. Inaczej jest
z prawem Boga. Ono jest doskonałe, doskonalsze od
grzesznego człowieka i dlatego nie można go zmieniać,
trzeba je wypełnić. Tymczasem wielu ludzi, traktując
Prawo Boga identycznie jak prawo ludzkie, chce je
zmieniać, chce je dostosowywać do swoich możliwości.
Wielu sądzi, że jeśli prawo będzie łaskawe dla
łamiących je, to życie będzie łatwiejsze. Wielki błąd.
Usuwanie prawa lub znoszenie sankcji prawnych jest
drogą wiodącą ku upadkowi człowieka.
Jeśli będzie wolno kłamać, to na ziemi wszyscy staną
się kłamcami, jeśli będzie wolno kraść, wszyscy będą
złodziejami, jeśli będzie wolno zabijać, wszyscy będą
mordercami, jeśli będzie wolno cudzołożyć, wszyscy
będą cudzołożnikami. Życie zamieni się w piekło. Boskie
Prawo pomaga doskonalić serce człowieka i normować
w duchu pokoju życie w społeczności. Im więcej
szacunku dla tego Prawa, tym więcej dobra w sercach
ludzi i we wspólnotach, jakie oni tworzą.
Jedyna droga prawdziwego życia to droga dobrego
poznania Bożego Prawa i możliwie doskonałego jego
wypełnienia. Im wcześniej człowiek to zrozumie, tym
prostsze staje się jego życie. Znika wówczas bunt
wobec Prawa. Nie jest ono bowiem przeszkodą, lecz
pomocą, nie zniewala, lecz otwiera perspektywę
wolności.
Człowiek, który zna wartość prawa, każde jego
naruszenie chce możliwie szybko naprawić, wiedząc, że
to jedynie słuszne działanie. Wierne zachowanie Bożego
Prawa wypełnia człowieka pokojem nieznanym dla
świata. Radość ducha promieniuje na innych.
Jezus jasno oświadczył: „Nie sądzcie, że przyszedłem
znieść Prawo albo Proroków. Nie przyszedłem znieść,
ale wypełnić”. Jeśli Jezus, Syn Boga, nie zamierza
znosić Prawa, to tym bardziej nie może tego uczynić nikt
inny na ziemi.
Należy możliwie szybko odbudować szacunek dla
Bożego Prawa, by nie traktować go, jak prawo ludzkie.
Boże Prawo jest święte i niezmienne, jest niezawodnym
punktem oparcia dla każdego, kto chce życie wygrać.

Bereavement Support Group Facilitator Training Course
Are you interested in becoming part of the ministry to the
bereaved in your parish? An eight-week training program is
offered by the Office of Family Life Ministries of the
Archdiocese of Newark and is now open for registration.
Sessions begin in March and continue into May and are
offered on Tuesday mornings or on Thursday evenings. For
class locations, registration and fee information, please
contact the Office of Family Life Ministries of the
Archdiocese of Newark at 973-497-4327. Pre-registration is
required; class size is limited.
Are you a registered parishioner?
Catholic often needs to verify that they are registered and
practicing members of a Parish Church when they are asked to
serve as Godparents or Sponsors and at other times. If you are
NOT receiving mail from us, it is an indication that you are not
registered, even though you may attend Mass regularly here.

2011 ANNIVERSARY MASSES
The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual
misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the
Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of
sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take
appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of
sexual abuse.
Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may
do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection
at (201) 407-3256.
This year, couples in the Archdiocese of Newark who
celebrating five, twenty-five or fifty years of marriage, can
register by notifying the Rectory. The Anniversary Masses
will be celebrated by Archbishop John J. Myers and held
at the Cathedral Basilica of the sacred Heart in Newark.

MATER DEI ACADEMY
Principally Speaking

Our mass on Sunday, January 30th to begin Catholic School’s week
was a very spiritual experience with our newly formed Bell Choir playing “Ave
Maria” and “As I Kneel Before You” under the direction of Denise DeVone and
the St. Stephen Children’s Choir singing for the entire mass under the
direction of Doris Medina. A special thanks to Carlos Andrade and Breann
Mobus who spoke eloquently about our beloved Mater Dei Academy. Breann
was also dedicated enough to speak at all of the other masses at St. Stephen
that day.

Bookmarkers were given to attendees at the 12:00 PM mass that
were custom made for Mater Dei Academy thanks to Barbara Condon’s
assistance and support in subsidizing the purchase of them. The remaining
bookmarkers are available to prospective new students after touring the
Academy.

Open house on Sunday, January 30th was a huge success.
A special thanks to Ms. Grabowski and the junior honor society for taking our
guests on tours. Our tour guides included Alyssa Schirm, Rachel Jovellanos,
Noelle Florio, Joseph Miller, Justin Mobus, Julio Villegas, Breann Mobus,
Carlos Andrade.

A special thanks to the Home School Association for the delicious
luncheon to honor the faculty and staff for all that they do for the children of
Mater Dei on Friday, February 4, 2011.

Family Bingo night was a huge success to end Catholic Schools’
Week thanks to the HSA for planning, sponsoring, and hosting the event.

We are currently enrolling students for next year. Please

learn about our exciting programs. Tours of the building are ongoing and can
be arranged by calling the Academy’s office at 201-991-3271.

Tickets are on sale for our annual auction that is being held on
February 25th. The cost of the ticket is $15 with a special promotion of $35 for
entrance and multiple tickets for the various tables. Please call the Academy’s

Annulment Information Evening
An Annulment Information Evening is scheduled for Wednesday, February
16, 2011. A Canon lawyer from the Archdiocese of Newark will discuss
the most recent theology, guidelines and requirements for obtaining a
Church annulment. The information will be presented in terms that all can
understand. A question and answer period will conclude the session. Preregistration is not necessary. This evening of information will be held at
Our Lady of Mercy RC Church, (Farley Center), 40 Sullivan Drive, Jersey
City, at 7:30 PM. For additional information, please call the Office of

Świętość może być wielka i rozgłośna, wypełniona cudami.
Ale może być również cicha, pokorna, niedostrzeżona,
wypowiadająca się tylko w tajemniczym i nieudolnym szepcie
duszy do Boga. (...)
Świętość jest współżyciem z Chrystusem, zespoleniem
i obcowaniem z Nim na miarę naszych możliwości.
Zawsze jednak z udziałem zaparcia się samego siebie,
z ciężarem własnego życia, który jest lżejszym lub cięższym
krzyżem każdego z nas, krzyżem bohaterów
lub krzyżem małych dzieci.
Każdy z nas zwycięża siebie według własnej miary i możliwości.
Ale Bogu to wystarcza, ponieważ On dla każdego z nas ma
odmienną miarę i niezwykłą wyrozumiałość. (...)
Religia Chrystusowa zawsze jest zaparciem się siebie,
przezwyciężaniem siebie, a niekiedy działaniem przeciwko
sobie. Jest dźwiganiem własnego krzyża, pod który jednak
Chrystus zawsze podstawia swoje ramię. Jest naśladowaniem
Chrystusa, a więc wspaniałą wspólnotą. Nigdy nie czujemy się
osamotnieni, zawsze niesiemy swój krzyż w najlepszym
towarzystwie Boga samego. Religia Chrystusowa nie jest
łatwizną życiową. Bóg stawia wymagania, ale jednocześnie
pomaga i wspiera. Im trudniejsze zadania Bóg człowiekowi
wyznacza, tym jest mu bliższy, tym bardziej Bóg jest w nim
obecny (...).
