Greetings to all on behalf of the Santa Fe Rugby Football Club, representing the great American state of New Mexico.
Although many folks have mistaken our state for a country beneath our southern border, take our word for it, New Mexico's
for real. Or rather, 1 should say, don't take our word for it; come visit our marvelous state and find why we all love her so.
The England Tour of '86 is our first overseas tour, and we're all very excited about realizing a rugger's dream; we know
we'll have a chance to play some great opposition and meet some fine people. Indeed, we already have friends in the
Lensbury and Cheshunt Clubs, who have both visited Santa Fe as a part of tours in 1982 and 1985, respectively.
The Santa Fe Rugby Club was founded in 1972 by a small band of maverick players from the University of New Mexico
team in Albuquerque. He may not forgive me for "dating" him here, but it should be pointed out that Ray Marrone. of Tour
86, was one of those founding fathers.
Our tour schedule calls for an opening match with our old friends, the Lensbury RFC {rugby football club). Lensbury
holds a special niche in our collective rugby heart, for they were the first foreign team we had the pleasure to host. They
proved to be a most congenial group, and we look forward to having the chance to do to their homes what they did to ours.
From Middlesex County it's off to the "west country" of Cornwall, land of fog-shrouded moors, ghosts, and scrumpy,
the native form of hard cider. If this all sounds a bit mysterious, it should, for Cornwall is certainly a special kind of place.
Here we'll find the Launceston RFC and Martyn Sandercock, who served as the only Cornish member of the Santa Fe RFC
in 1984. We'll be playing under the lights against Launceston, a first for our lads.
A little sight-seeing will be in order on our way back towards the London area, where we'll be hosted by the Warlingham
RFC of Surrey County. Both our overseas tour manager, Herb Howell, and I have had the pleasure of associating with the
Warlingham Club on previous trips abroad. Herb even had occasion to revolutionize the game of cricket while playing for
the Blue and White, as only an American can. While at Warlingham we'll have the opportunity to find out why our Most
Valuable Teammate of 1984, David Kipnis. never returned from a short vacation to the UK two years ago. It seems he "got
stuck" at Warlingham, where he's better not take the field against us!
Our final fling in England this spring will come through the good auspices of our mates at the Cheshunt RFC.
Hertfordshire County champions last year, their USA tour plans were hard-hit last year by the sad state of the British pound,
and the side which appeared at Santa Fe Rugby's Springfest in April was not really representative of the kind of rugby power
the club represents. We do note, however, that the pound has now stabilized considerably, a fact which I trust will not escape
Club bigwig Neil Summerbell when it comes time to toast our marvelous performances on the pitch.
To our British hosts, we say "cheers!" and gracias. We sincerely hope our visit will serve as a catalyst to promote future
exchanges between our countries. An open invitation is hereby extended to any and all of you who may wish to visit our
wonderful city, lust drop us a line and we'll do all we can to make your stay (however longl as comfortable as possible.
As for our innumerable supporters and patrons in New Mexico, we wish to emphasize our deep appreciation of your
generosities. We go to England to represent you all. with the knowledge that it could not have taken place without your
help. We intend to live up to your high expectations for us. It certainly is an easy thing to recommend your various products
and services to others. Thank you.
For our club-mates, male and female, who worked like dogs to get this tour off the ground, I'm confident that you will
feel a deep sense of satisfaction at each and every turn of our Adventure.
And now, ON WITH THE TOUR!
Yours in Rugby Fellowship,
Dave Wheelock, coach

GREETINGS FROM THE CITY OF SANTA FE, THE OLDEST CAPITAL CITY IN THE UNITED
STATES OF AMERICA!
As the Santa Fe Rugby Football Club, founded in 1972, embark on their historic
tour of England, we wish them the best of fortune in their endeavors. We
would like to thank you for the hospitality that you will be extending to our
team members while they are in your city, and hope that we can reciprocate in
the future. The City of Santa Fe, this year is celebrating its 375th anniversary, we also are the home of the oldest celebration, the Santa Fe Fiestas,
celebrated in September of each year. Our climate is that of Indian Summers,
clear blue skies, and moments away from our plaza, we enjoy downhill skiing in
the winter.
This is the first in history, as no team has ever toured overseas. I am sure
that they will demonstrate the highest of skills and their spirit the highest
from the United States. We are very proud of the Santa Fe Rugby Football
Club.

Charlie began his athletic career as a big time little leaguer. He participated in
the Little League World Series, representing Germany and Europe. Chaz then
became a rugby fanatic while living in Washington State. He played in the Collegiate and 1st Division British Columbia. Canada RFU in college and was a Pacific
Northwest Rep in 73. He then moved to California where he played for the B.A.T.S.
and became Captain and coach of the Palo Alto RFC. In '74 he was a Northern
California Poppy Select. Chaz then sought some real adventure and moved to Santa
Fe. Charlie has been a Rio Grande select player and captain as well as being Santa
Fe's club secretary and assistant coach. Charlie was invaluable, and at times amazing as he put this program together. As he says "when the world wearies and ceases
to satisfy, there is always the garden."

The Doc. who is professionally single and has a part-time job as a dentist, has
been the Santa Fe RFC President for 5 years running. He has been a member
of the Santos since 1980. Mark has represented the Rio Grande Select XV from
1980-84. His other representative play came while he was playing for the powerful Chicago Lions (75-80). He was a Chicago Area Select player as well as a Midwest
under 23. He says his best rugby experience came while playing against I.P.R.
Williams during the 76 London Welsh Tour. Doc DeLeon has also been pursuing
wind-surfing as a team member of Windsurfing Int. Mark's philosophy in life mirrors a |ohn Barrymore quote, "It's a slander to say my problems come from chasing women, my problems begin when 1 catch them." Mark's life is dominated by
pursuing as much as possible within a given time sequence. He is often seen to
be leaving some important event saying "Gotta go, gotta date" Gentlemen, LOCK

Dave has been a focal point and leader of the Santa Fe RFC for years. His dynamic
style of play on the field keeps the ooohs and aaahs coming, while his fishing stories
will keep you mesmerized throughout an entire evening at the pub. After making
All Conference, in American football during High School he went to the University
of New Mexico where his infamous rugby career began. He later played with the
Albuquerque Aardvarks and has been with the Santos since 1976. In the spring
of 85 Dave found himself co-conspiring with David Kipnis to infiltrate the ranks
of Warlingham RFC, Surrey. My, oh my, but the lies he brought back! A member
of the Santos coaching staff since 1978, Dave has played for the Rio Grande RFU
Selects l'74-'84), captained the side in '81. '82 and '84, and coached these Coyote
selectes in '82 and '84. Not only is "Reload" well respected in the rugby world,
but he has a real bitchen' photo, what else can be said about a man of such prowess but that his life's ambition is to be a ladies golf instructor: "you start them
out on the irons and work them into the woods."

age of 51. Lee has been a kind inspiration for many of us since those times. A
track and field champion in college, Lee still can leg it out. especially if his dear

very able. Everyone is invited to his ranch in Barcelona at the Tour's conclusion.

his ability to put life as he sees it into pearls of wisdom speaks for itself. "South

there was rugby in the Duke City, in 72. What a change! Have been playing and

College. The club hopes he has half the talent in The Game as he has in golf; Greg
virtually owns the Santo Cup. awarded to the winner of the annual Santo Invitational Golf Tournament. Greg also excels at darts; several bar owners in Santa Fe
have invited him to display his skills—elsewhere. Greg's rugby services will probably be saved for the Warlingham affair—watch out! Mr. Gibbs will also be in
charge of accepting pre-match hospitalities (i.e. drinks) on behalf of the Club.

|ohn is emabarking on his third tour having previously toured luarez, Mexico and
Rochester. New York, two of the great scenic wonders of North America. After
14 years of abusing his body playing rugby, not to mention his demented childhood,
John can't seem to make up his mind about which position he plays. Ask and he
will play them all especially if he feels you really need and love him. When |ohn
isn't playing rugby he and his lifelong friend, Winnie The Pooh, engage in heated
discussions of the rights of man. He fantasizes about pickles and Jim Simms and
doesn't like redheads, or is it vice versa?

Chic has honored the Santa Fe RFC with his smart dress and sly ways for 10 years.
He has just now come into his own having reached the age when a prop is in his
glory. He is married to Mary Helen who says he has the mooost beautiful eyes.
His other physical assets speak for themselves. Chic comes alive after a few brews,
a proverbial hit of the party. Belly dancing is his specialty. It has been rumored
that when he goes to the big scrum in the sky he will donate his house, including
Mary Helen to the Santa Fe Santos. What a guy!

Walked on for Orange Park, Florida RFC, the unheralded beginning of a beautiful
love affair with the game, i.e. he is constantly %-*&#!ing up. The collective consciousness (or lack thereof) can be attributed to Shannon, who periodically subjects us to "motivational workshops." The first winner of the Atrocity Belt, Shannon emerges from his Albuquerque crash pad every two years to run for New Mexico state senate. He is the major lobbier for Clean Restrooms in our otherwise
fair state. When not insulting major judicial figures. Shannon enjoys golf and Schaefer
beer. "If there is anything 1 want from this tour it's a cheap shot at Lewis Martinez." Only unanimous choice on this year's Rio Grande Cantina select side. Also
the #1 proponent of Alka-Seltzer.

only is he a dynamic force on the pitch, he's even a BIGGER force in a shopping

seriousness towards life, as evidenced by his impressive collection of trench coats

with the Brujos. His leadership abilities have helped solidify their forwards, as is
evident by him being elected scrum captain by his teammates. He has been Rio

"It's simply a question of where he can do the least damage." The Rio Grande

"The Baloney Pony" has more nicknames than most of us have fleas. This is because
of the vast respect he has accumulated amongst his teammates over the years,
and the longing he has produced in the hearts of many a rugby groupie. Ray played
in the first rugby match ever played in New Mexico in 1970. and was a founder
of both the Santa Fe and Aardvark clubs. Ray's career came to an abrupt end when
he retired in 1980, '81, '82. '83, '84, and '85. Rio Grande RFU selects, 1976-69.
Ray is one of the better-dressed members of the Tour, and you will probably encounter him wearing at least one item of your apparel during his stay. Ray says
he has one move left, which he intends to use on your wife/girl/daughter.

ROADRUNNER
(Geococcyx califorianus)
The desert clown, unique to our region and like nothing you ever saw on land or
sea. "The Roadrunner" is a ground dweller of the cuckoo family, two feet long, with a
bill longer than his head and an appetite longer than his tail. A bedouin, a true son of
the desert—but never a vagabond.
At first sight he appears tail heavy—but his best stunts depend on that tail. He is
a speed demon and will race anything from a horned toad to a Cadillac; and when he
is quite sure he has won, he will turn off to the side, throw his tail in the air, dig his toes
in the ground, and look back in impudent astonishment. Though wild and lawless he
makes an amusing pet, not at all shy, ready to eat anything he can swallow, and an
inveterate show-off—quite a ventriloquist at times. Ranchers like him around the
barnyard and all Mexicans love him as their loyal "Paisano".
Roadrunners are courageous and selfsupporting and do an enormous amount of good in
the world. They eat incredible numbers of the very
pests man wants most to be rid of—grasshoppers,
crickets, caterpillars, beetles, centipedes, mice,
lizards and, most important of all, snakes—lots of
snakes! It is a thrilling three hour show to watch him
swallow it head first. It is a desperate business and
a lot of snake is visible a long time!"
