EATING DISORDER- ANOREXIA
Anorexia is a dangerous eating disorder, which often starts in the teenage years. In Britain 5%
of girls are anorexic and four of ten teenage girls skip meals so they can be thin like fashion
models and pop stars. But is not just girls who want to lose weight, many boys want to
become thin too and they also do not eat enough.
Anorexia is a medical condition and its full name is anorexia nervosa. People with anorexia
try not to eat and they lose a lot of weight. They cannot overcome the feeling that they are fat
while watching their reflection in the mirror even when they are extremely thin. They use
other ways of keeping thin like taking laxative tablets ( which make you go to the toilet more
often) or doing too much physical exercise. Anorexia can become extremely weak and 20% of
them do not live more than 20 years after their anorexia started. Only 60% of anorexics can
recover completely.
The Eating Disorders Association claims that girls between 11 and 19 years of age are more
likely to become anorexic, but anorexia can happen to anyone. More and more boys are
becoming anorexic. Eating disorders are also increasing among 8-11-year-olds. Celebrities are
particularly vulnerable because their fans are always judging their appearance.
Scientists claim that eating problems start because some people are born with genetically
inherited propensities but others think that we learn them from observing people around us.
Also, it may occur to people who don’t feel in control of their lives, so they tend to control
what they eat instead. It can also start as a result of some other problems like general
unhappiness at home or failure at school.
The society and schools can try to prevent young people from anorexia and other eating
disorders by persuading them to avoid diets and to turn to sports and exercising sensibly.
Even overweight teenagers should not diet but involve regularly in some physical activities.
Schools should weigh their pupils regularly.
