Amos GPS OLD BOYS RUGBYUNIONCLUB INC.ANNUALREPORT2OO3 PRESIDENT'SMESSAGE FinancialMembers,Players,Supporters,Friends. As ever, thereare manysoulswho contributeto the smoothworkingof a club such as ours.Sadly, the "many"are slowlybecomingthe "few",whilethe numberof tasksgrowsand expectations increase. Enthusiastic and committedcoachesand managersare harderthan everto find, whilevolunteerswilling to devotetheirtime and energyto helpingkeepingthe club aliveare similarlyrare. We all leadbusier and morecomplexlivesand "theclub"has to competewith the needto work longerhoursto makea livingand take its placeamongothercompetingdemands. Our generalmanagerRod Torkington has a lengthyand variedjob description and our Development OfficerGhris Lane has similadybroadexpectations accompanying his modeststipend.Neitherhas "turf-laying" on his listof duties, but that is how they spentseveraluncomplaining days duringthe seasonand againin the briefinterregnum beforethe cricketseasonwhena job had to be done for the right(Jeeps)priceand therewere insufficient volunteersto do it. We are fortunateindeedto havesuch men workingfor us. In a perfectworlda JeepsGeneralManagerand Development Officerwouldbe managingand developingratherthan slavingin the sun to get hundredsof metresof turf laidon the main oval and it couldbe legitimately arguedthat this is not the best use of theirtime. But needsmustwhen the Devil drives, and perhapswhen our playersare runningon a level, well drainedand well grassedsurfacenext year ratherthan bakedexpansesof dust and pot holesthey'llthankthose(includingsome of thoseselfsame players,I hastento add) who got the job done when it neededto be done, ratherthan just shruggingshouldersand puttingit off to nextyear. My thanksalso to the GPS ManagementCommittee.Therewere no "alickadoos" amongthem (a term popularised in the amateurdaysto describeblazerwearingofficialswho swannedaroundwhileplayers weretreatedlikecattle).Thesepeoplevolunteered to helpwith no expectation of rewardor thanks. Those expectationswere generallymet. That they were probablynot betterknown to the playing fraternityis not a criticismof them but a reflectionof theirpreferencefor workingdiligentlybehindthe scenesto get the job done whilealso havingto make a livingon the side.Nevertheless we needto ensurethat they are morevisiblein 2004. At the start of the year we began a StrategicPlanningprocesswith the assistanceof a great friend of Jeeps,Neil Hatherly. This was to map out a five year planfor the club and to reorganiseour managementcommitteeinto a more relevantportfoliostructure. This processtook some time but the resultswere wofih waitingfor. Portfolioresponsibilities were allocatedas followsfor 2003,with the idea beingthat "ministers" wouldtake chargeof theseareasbut not be expectedto do all the work: Treasurer (Rob King-Scott): accounting, longtermfunding, budgets(reviewand consolidation), expenditurereview("leaderol razor gang") Secretary/Admin (Chris Stewad): Operations- conductcorrespondence, organiseteam photos, updatehonourboard, organisetrophies, recordproceedsof meetings- Registrar- maintaindatabase(players, sponsors, members, old boys etc),playerstatistics, initiate& overseeplayerand memberregistrations & fee payments, deputisefor Secretary Marketing/Promotion (Kevin Hoare/Paul Reid): - develop"valueproposition" for sponsorship/membership drives- promotionto localand mainstream media, promotionof functions, specialevents, sponsor& "oldboy" liaison Communication/Admin(Paul ReicUKevinHoare): Newsletterpreparation, communityrelations, preparationof annualreport, promotionof merchandising, player, old boy and refereeliaison, matchday PA, organiseballboys, meetand greet GPS Rugby (Paul McGahan/JohnSexton/JohnPeterson): - Recruitment, retentionand developmentof individualcoaches, grades& coltsplayers, medical& supportstaff- promotionof club culture& past traditions,fostermentoringprogram- develop& monitor performance against"runningrugby"objectives.- recruitment and retentionof past players, motivating themto becomeactivein club activities. Ru gby Development (Ron Cervetto/Ryan Webster): - developmentof the game in our catchment:Ashgrove-GPS, AlbanyCreek-GPSand schools, including schools/colts, colts/seniors transition- Coachingclinics, juniorcurtainraisersfor premiergames,"big brother"linksbetweenpremierplayersand juniorteams GPS OLD BOYS RUGBY UNION CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2OO3 Club Development (John Sexton/Paul McGahan/Rob King-Scott): - Pursueobjectiveslaidout in the club strategicplan (Vision2008)notablythe sectionscovering "Sustainable in co-operation with otherpoftfolioleaders FinancialDevelopment" & "ClubDevelopment", Social Events/Merchandise(Geraldine Barlow/Ryan Webster): - Developsocialprogramfor season,includingpre-seasonlaunch,jerseypresentations, Jeeps AnnualDinner,pre-Testdinner, breakfasts, Golf day, RugbyFest, any grandfinalcelebrations, - Commissionand sell merchandise sponsorsdays. - Operationof barlcanteen/catering. Grounds & Property (Scott Lavaring/Chris Stewart): - "Thegrass& anythingon it" - maintenance, irrigation, usage- scheduling, liaisonwith equipment(postpads, cornerposts),matchday set up & pulldown, preparing VDCC/Ashgrove-GPS, & budget.- Lighting- developmentplan, liaisonwith BCC & community, maintenance expenditure & cleaning)storagefacilities, budget. Facilities- Club rooms(includingdressingshedsmaintenance budget. changerooms, liaisonwith VDCC & Ashgrove-GPS, The portfolioallocationsprobablycame a littletoo late duringthe seasonto work as etfectivelyas they should, but therewere some successesand this shouldbe perseveredwith in 2004. Sadly, severalmembersof the currentcommitteehave served noticeof their intentionto stand aside at the end of theircurrenttermsaftermanyyearsof service. The evercheerfuland pragmaticChris Stewarthas servedthe juniorand seniorclubsovera numberof seasons, but we hope he will stillbe availableto serve the occasionalbeer at the "Glue Factory".Geraldine Barlow has been my Rock of Gibraltarthis yearand is anotherwho will stillbe "around"to help, albeitnot on the committee.Rob King-Scott stiffenedthe sinewsand steppedin when a Treasurerwas requiredand stuck to his last despitethe conflicting demandson his professional and personaltime.John Petersonwas another who was alwayswillingto help, while Ryan Webster, who headsoff overseas, was a link man with the players. Our other player representative, Scott Lavaring was anotherwho was always readyto help behindthe scenes, whetherit was drummingup supportfor functions, organisingthe collectionand installation of the largeumbrellasinstalledon the forecourtduringthe year,or keepingthe cold room operating. John Sexton joinedthe team this year and was a hardworkingand committedcontributorto the cause. John'sgreatattributeis that he has an excessof commonsense,a rarecommodityin this age of We had many longconversations management-speak. duringthe year on variousissuesand I always valuedhis counseland commitmentto what he believedwas in the best interestof the club. Every presidentshouldbe luckyenoughto havea John Sextonaroundto helpcut throughthe fog when the harddecisionshaveto be made. The club is fortunatethat he has offeredhimselffor electionagainin 2004. in his experienceas a rugbyadministrator SimilarlyPaul McGahancontributedhis considerable counselto this ing6nuepresidentwhen difficultissuesarose, and I thankhim sincerelyfor it. He also is willingto go aroundagain,as are (praisebe) Ron Cervettoand Kevin Hoare. The clubthis year heldtwo majorfund raisingluncheons,a pre-Testfunctionwhichhad sportspoetand authorPeterFentonas our guestspeakerand a pre-RugbyWorldCup "roast"for Dan Herbertpriorto his departurefor France. Both raisedvaluablerevenuefor the club and wouldnot have been possible withoutthe planningand guestrecruitment effortsof Robin Thomson and Will Colwell, and the lunch day contributions of MC Anthony Herbertand auctioneerWren Bligh. As ever,Torkowas the fulcrum for theseeventsand as everworkedtirelesslyto makethem happen. The RugbyWorldCup providedus with an additionalopportunity to raisefundswhen we drewthe final in a ballotto host a big screenin the TelstraFrontRow promotion. We combinedwith ValleysDistrict CricketClubto stagethis event, with bothclubssharingthe workload. The two clubsagreedto also sharethe proceedsby feedingthem towardsa specialfund to upgradethe club kitchen, for reasonsthat are explainedlater.GeraldineBarlow,Torkoand DO ChrisLaneworkedbehindthe sceneswiththe Valleysvolunteersto makethis one which, despitethe earlyrain, provedan enjoyableshowcasefor the Rugbyproduct.Hopefullythe successof RWC 2003 will draw moreconvertsto Rugbyin 2004 and we will attractour shareof them.Howeverwe can'texpectthis to happenautomatically and we will needto work harderto makeour club morespectatorfriendly. The umbrellason the forecourtand the new seatinghas helpedin this regardand the upgradingof the PA systemin time for Finalnightwill also standus in goodsteadfor 2004 and beyond. Sponsorship KevinHoarewas instrumental in Jeeps'retainingNundah Mitsubishi as our PrincipalSponsorin 2003, supplementing that with a contribution from his own companyFastwayCouriers.I am pleasedto announcethat Nundahand Fastwavwill be aboardaoainin 2004.thanksto Kevinand thoseJeeos GPS OLD BOYS RUGBY UNION CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2OO3 supporterswho came to the party and boughtcars from Paul Norris'sgroup duringthe course of the year.We ask that all Jeepsmemberssupportthosewho supportyourclub. The Gap Tavern was a key sponsoragain in 2003 under new stewardshipin Fosters'ALH. We trust the industrychangesnow in trainwill allowthis partnership to continue. QueenslandRugbysponsorsBank of Queensland,XXXX,Bartercardand Triple M, were enthusiastic supportersof grassrootsrugby as well as the glamorousend of town and we thank them for that commitment. Jeeps also benefitedhugelyfrom contributionsfrom Bowser & Lever, Naturform, Brisbane lce Sales, Ashgrove Air, Divine Flowers, Ferguson Betts, Hendra Hardware, Rapid Copy, Southcorp Wines, Stocks Appliances,UltimateBuildings, Willman Concreting Serviceand World Rugby Specialists (KooGa).We thankthem and urgeyou to favourthem with your cuslomif you havethe opportunity. On the Field The seasonpromisedmuch but deliveredonlyfrustrationfor the GPS opengrades, but the colts' performances and developments off the fieldgivescausefor renewedoptimism. Jeeps started2003 with healthystocks in the tight five and at least one more halfbackthan was consideredgood for us by the QRU. But afterstafiingthe WelsbyCup withfour straightwins, Premier Grade'sfoftunesspiralleddownwardsas the injurytoll mountedand they finishedthe seasonwith eight wins, eightlossesand a draw. Our PremierGradecoachPaul Green spentcountlesshoursdown at the club each week goingthroughmatchvideos, planningtacticsfor upcominggamesand mullingover possibleanswersto a weekly injurylist that never seemed to get shofter. But the Herculeaneffoftsof he and fellowcoachesMick Heenanand Marcus Riley alwaysseemedto be frustratedby yet anolher untimelyinjuryor setback. We couldhavedone withoutthe intervention of the QRU coachingstaffin persuadingBen Wakelyto moveto Universityfor the Premierseasonon the basisthat his chancesof contractrenewalwouldbe impairedby stayingat Jeeps, becausehe could not be assuredof gettinga proper run in his preferred position. As eventstranspiredhe missedthe contractanywayand all the agonyand distraction was ultimatelyfor nought. We wishedBen all the bestwhen he movedand we continueto hopethat his talentsare rewarded. The upsideof our injurytoll was that severalplayerswho mightnot otherwisehave had the chancero shineroseto the challengemagnificently, whileotherswho were forcedto switchpositionsalso surprisedboththemselvesand theircoaches.Out of adversitycomes hope. Hopealso f rom the performance of the GPS U19s,underColtsDirectorAlex Pope. Aftera coupleof yearsfor the GPS Colts,Alex,Steve Calder and their many helpersarrivedon the sceneand indifferent put considerable energyinto recruitingand retaininga new breedof youngGallopers.ColtsI and ll reachedthe preliminary finalbeforebeingeliminatedby strongerand moreexperiencedsides, but this fine groupof youngmen wantsto finishthe job nextyear and has alreadystafieda self{inanced, offseasontrainingprogram. Off the field,GPS signedan agreementwiththe MurrumbaRugbyClub, the Cabooltureand Redcliffe juniorsand our AlbanyCreek-GPSaffiliateto work togetherto developrugbyin the northernregion. The GPS-MurrumbaAlliance will be a work in progresstor 2004,but will involveJeepsplayingat least one PremierGradematchin the allianceregionas a rugbypromotion. AlbanyCreek-GPScouldfield200 playersin2Q04,whileour junioraffiliateAshgrove-GPSremainsa livingtestamentto the fecundityof rugbylovingcouplesin the northweslern suburbs. Sadly we farewelledone of our favouritesons, Daniel Herbert, who has playedat Ashgrovesince age seven. We'realso sad to lose Matt Cockbain who, like Daniel, will ply his tradeoverseasin 2QQ4. We congratulate Daniel Heenanon makinghis Wallabydebutin 2003,and our otherstate representativesBen Tune, Tom McVerry, Tim Atkinson, Ben Wakely, Michael Tabrett and Anthony Mathison.Geoff lngram was deservedlycalledintothe Queensland22 tor the matchagainstSamoa but didn'tget to run on. Two of our colts,Martin Perkins and Pat O'Connor were selectedin the QueenslandUnder19 side and are also destinedfor greaterthings.Donovan Slade, Ross Larsson, Peter Mclntosh and Shane Arnold playedfor QueenslandA. Paul Biddulph was againa memberof the Australiandeaf rugbysquad. Thanks in abundanceto our coachesand managers.Peter Garbett and Matt Lines had a harsh introduction to the thanklessrealitiesand frustrations of coachingthe 1st gradeteam, when the top level injurytoll flowedthroughto them. Paul Garner was anotherto be thrustintothe fray as 2ndGradecoach when work commitments took Al Smith interstate. He took on the challenge, overcamethe setbacks GPS OLD BOYS RUGBY UNION CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2OO3 and worked hard to help his playersimprovea{!fl!v their rugby.Scotty Lavaring and rony Mahoneyhelpedout the club by bringingtheir2002 Premiershrp winning4"' gradeup a divisionto ptay in 3'ograde.The goingwas tougheruut iney remaineddeterminedto enjoythemselves. In Colts,Justin Barlow was a valued specialistfonvardscoach for Colts I and will team with Chris Lane to take greaterresponsibility for ColtsI in 2004,underthe guidinghandsof Alex and Steve. Ray Moore is a true Jeeps Rugbyman; he loveshis rugbyand lovesimpafting his knowledgeand enthusnsmto new generations of players. He workedwonoerswith colts ll to mouldthem as a team whilealso functioning.as pan of a broadersquadwith Coltsl. The resultwas that bothteams progressedto the finals and will do even betternext year. Luke Bardentook responsibility for Coltslll who unfortunately were requiredto play in a separate divisionto the otherUnder.l9s. This led to a measureof dislo-cation f rom the restof the club but Luke and Terry Donovan worked hard to overcomethat and to make the team feel part of the wider club. our club selectorGeorge Bickerstaffagainamazedwith his abilityto quickly learnthe namesano playingstrengthsof everynew recruitto the gradesand the teams couldnot havefunctionedwithoutthe tirelesseffortsof team managersSimon Mairmino, Tim Conroy, ciarram Rylance,FreJDixon, Tony Mahoney,Tim Fergus-on,AtSmith (untilthe inconsiderate ougilruf and movedinterstate), Daniet Tasker and John Strofield. And so, to 2004. After being activelyinvolvedwith Jeeps teams as a selectorand as a coach for the past six years - his secondlengthyspellat the club - PaulGreenhas told us he'd likea breakfrom the demandsof premier Rugbynextyear.I wouldliketo personallythankhim for his effortsanO act<nowtedge the painstaking effort he put into the role of Head Coach, despitethe frustrationshe had to contendwith. The coach, slot ls not an easy one. lt's my hopethat aftera breakhe can be persuaded to applyhis immensetatentand experlenceto some other role withinthe club. While we can't affordto burn people out, we can't afford to losetalenteither. ThanHullywe are foftunatethat Mick Heenanhas agreedto assumethe roleof GpS HeadCoach, after manyyears'preparation for the responsibility that this positionentails.Yourcommitteeis confidentthat he will provea successfuland popularappointmentwiin tne players.we are equallytor.tunate inat MarcusRileywill be thereas assistant.Theseappointments'mark a generational changein the c-oachingstaff and are a tributeto the talent identificationand coachiig developmentet"tortsot paul Green,SteveMeehanand othercoachingand administration peopleriitnintne ctub. Club Development As I havementionedJeepsthis year signeda partnership agreementwith clubsin the fast growrng Murrumbaregion,a hugeareawhichstretchesfrom the pin6 niver across to Redcliffe, northto the SunshineCoastand northwestto Kilcoy.Underthe agreement,Jeepswill link with threeclubs- senror and junior- in the Cabooltureand Redcliffeshires, and our own Albany Creek-GpSaffiliateto form the GPS-Murrumba Alliance. Talentedplayersfrom the area who might otherwisedrift away from the game will be able to stay within the allianceby havingthe opportunity to try out withJeepsat bremiei Rugbylevelwhilethe newerctubs are-stillgrowing.The clubswillalso worktogetherto advancerugbyin th6 region, but will retaintheir individualidentitiesand administration. we willcontinueto competejust as keenlyon the fieldwhen our teams meet, but we want everyonein the regionto adoptand suppofiJeepsas theirpremierRugbyclubA key factorin hatchingthis plan was the rapidgroMh of AlbanyCreek-GpS, whichwas formedas a Jeepsinitiativein only 1996.butwhichhas grown.rapidly in recentyearsunderthecapablestewardship of SteveTaylor. The Brumbieswant to developplayersioseniorlevel and we're keento encouragethat. One of the unforeseenconsequences juniorsin the main of the co-locationof the Ashgrove-GPS clubhousewas the resultingincreasedfocuson NumberOne oval. The seatingis there, the canteenis there,so most of the games are playedthere. This made the oval renovationsvital and merelyphase one of what shouldbe an ongoingprogramof rejuvenation and maintenance. Two gamesthat epitomisedthe true spiritof the GPS RugbyClubwere the away Universitygame and the away Logangame.AgainstUni we took it to the top side, almostcausingthe upsetof the round. Then, withina few weeksof this game the side was decimatedwith injuriesand we finishedthe game with 11 playersagainstLogan's15. I only hopethis type of spiritcan displayedon a weeklybasisin 2004. One injurythat we did benefitfrom was that to Tim Atkinson.DuringTim's recoveryhe provided invaluableassistanceon trainingnightas well as game days. The playersand coachingstaffextendour appreciation to Tim. Thanksto Nathan"Nugget"Canniffefor his Captaincy. He neverlostfaithin his playersand theirability to compete. He carriedan injurythroughmostof the seasonand finishedall gamesin considerable pain but wouldnot give in. The much underratedroleof team managerwas fulfilledby Steveand Graemethis season.Thanksto bothfor theircommitmentto everyweekend. Peter Garbett Coach Div 1 2nd Grade (Third Grade) 2003 was a difficultbut enjoyableyear as my firstinvolvement with the GPS club. The departureof Al Smithleftsome big shoes;shorts, jerseyetc to fill and I relishedthe opportunity.I was very warmly welcomedby the club, which I greatlyappreciated and was soon tryingto ensurethat trainingwas tough but enjoyable. On the fieldthe enormousnumberof players,initially25-30,whichdwindleddue to injuryand also lack of gametime, restrictedour performances. Over 10 playersleft, eitherthroughf rustrationat not being ableto get a game with us or 4th grade, and did not return. This had an enormousimpacton the playersand led to the FirstGradeside forfeitingtheir final match versusWests. This was a disgrace,as rugbyis all aboutgettinga game and we deniedour playersas well as the Westsplayersin this instance. Despitethis, the playersalwaysdisplayedguts and determination and althoughthe same XV nevertook the fieldtwice,a senseof "team"developed.Subsequently socialmeetingsand BBQ'swith the players havebeen a WorldCup highlightwith moreto come!! Playersdeservingof a mentionare captainand formerSouthlandand CanterburyColtsplayerGlen Merrilees, the big-hearted Gus Porteousand newcomerRoss Marshall. In a seasonthat fluctuatedfrom richesto rags we enjoyedthe social interactionthat Rugby has at its core on the field and off. One game that standsout in this RugbyWorldCup year was againstEastsin the secondround. Our team featuredplayersfrom SouthAfrica, the USA,Sweden,France,Samoa,New Zealandand a token Aussieor two.
