I – Interviewer, AL – Alice Lawson I: Alice Lawson – this name is associated with a sociologist who has, this time, done some research into modern friendships, if that’s the right expression? AL: Yes, you may refer to my research as research into modern friendships because it is exactly what I have focused on. I: So, tell us why you’ve decided to look into this particular area? AL: For a number of reasons. However, what really made me do it was when my son, who is eighteen, said very proudly he had 150 friends on Facebook. I showed him the dictionary definition of the word “friend”, which read “a friend is a person who you know, like and trust” and he laughed at me, adding it was a very old-fashioned way of understanding the term. This left me thinking and because I like it when something makes me reflect, I decided to examine this closely. I think this kind of research is always the most important to carry out. I: And what are the conclusions? AL: The Internet and the social media have completely destroyed the meaning of the word “friend”. A friend is anyone who follows you on a social networking site. Some top Facebook users boast about so-called “whale” status and say they have over 5,000 “friends” – but what kind of friends can these people be? Online friends want to know you because they need an audience for themselves or they need you to add a name to their collection of friends. These are very selfish reasons, aren’t they? And friendships should be based on values such as trust, common interests or empathy – the ability to understand another person’s feelings, shouldn’t they? I: Absolutely! Is this also true that people have fewer and fewer trusted friends these days? AL: Well, it seems to be the case. Statistics say that there are twice as many people without trusted friends as there were ten years ago. This means we are in touch with more and more people but we trust fewer of them. So, I keep telling my son that when he texts his bff, which, by the way, stands for “best friend forever”, who he’s never met, he should be careful about what he says and what he confides in his online friend. I: What advice would you give to young people trying to make friends then? Strona 2 z 8 WOJEWÓDZKIE KONKURSY PRZEDMIOTOWE 2015/2016 – GIMNAZJUM STOPIEŃ SZKOLNY AL: Apart from what I’ve just mentioned, I’d tell them to stop counting online friends because quantity doesn’t matter. The quality of your friendship does. I’m not saying you must give up the Net as a place to look for friends but doesn’t treat it as your only way of finding soulmates. I: Thank you, Alice. I hope young people will take what you said to heart. AL: You’re welcome. 1. Alice Lawson did some research into modern friendships because A. she found the subject thought-provoking.
