"Who can find a virtuous woman?" (Prv 31,10)
Aneta Gawkowska (University of Warsaw, Poland) "Who can find a virtuous woman?" (Prv 31,10) The Female Virtue Ethics According to New Feminism My goal is to present the reflection on virtues which is developed in new feminist thought. New feminism is the theoretical and practical standpoint worked out on the basis of John Paul II's theology of women and his theology of the body (collected in Wednesday catecheses as Man and Woman He Created Them and in his multiple documents devoted to women, among which the most prominent is the Apostolic Letter on the Dignity and Vocation of Woman Mulieris dignitatem). New feminism also refers to the writings of St. Theresa Benedicta of the Cross, more known widely as Edith Stein. She was an early proponent of the Catholic promotion of women and so she is considered to be an early precursor of the new feminism, especially because her reflections on the subject find many similarities in John Paul II's vision of women. My reflections will be based chiefly on the new feminist writings collected in Michele M. Schumacher's (ed.) Women in Christ. Toward a New Feminism, and I will also refer to the views of Alice von Hildebrand, Janne Haaland Matlary, and Mary F. Rousseau. Furthermore, I will link the theses presented there with some thoughts by Alasdair MacIntyre, who thinks that the female recognition of human dependence is a worthy goal to be pursued by men, especially in the face of contemporary crisis of social bonds. In my presentation I will ponder the question of virtue as courage in the female version. How is there the emphasis put on the human relatedness and personal love? What is the role given there to weakness? What is the role of want or longing, as well as the attitude to them expressed especially in receptivity and humility as well as the recognition of realism as the best account of the world? And finally, what does it all tell about the relation with the male human being? What important message for them and their concept of virtue does it contain? "Niewiastę dzielną któż znajdzie?" (Prz 31,10) Etyka cnót kobiecych według nowego feminizmu Celem mojego referatu jest przedstawienie refleksji dotyczącej cnót zawartej w myśli nowego feminizmu. Nowy feminizm to pewne stanowisko teoretyczne i praktyczne wypracowane na bazie teologii kobiety i teologii ciała, jaką zaprezentował Jan Paweł II (m.in. w katechezach środowych pt. Nowy feminizm nawiązuje też ściśle do pism św. Women in Christ. Toward a New Feminism, ale nawiążę też do poglądów Alice von Hildebrand, Janne Haaland Matlary i Mary F. Rousseau.
