DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
Relative clauses to zdania podrzędne zaczynające się od słów takich jak who, which,
where, które określają rzeczownik lub zaimek i umożliwiające identyfikację osób (who) ,
zwierząt lub przedmiotów (which) oraz miejsc (where). Np.:
Have you seen the man who lives next door.
I like the building which is being built in the city centre.
I hate the dog which is always barking at 5 a.m.
Zaimki względne who i which występują przed podmiotem lub go zastępują same wtedy
spełniają funkcję podmiotu. Jeśli who lub which występują przed podmiotem (czyli nie
spełniają funkcji podmiotu w zdaniu podrzędnym) wówczas można who lub which
opuścić. Np.:
Have you seen the man who lives next door.
Have you seen the man who I told you about yesterday.
Have you seen the man I told you about yesterday.
I like the building which is being built in the city centre.
I like the building which my neighbours painted blue.
I like the building my neighbours painted blue.
I hate the dog which is always barking at 5 a.m.
I hate the dog which my sister bought last month.
I hate the dog my sister bought last month.
