Detaching ourselves from material possessions and considering them ”rubbish” does just that. It strengthens our rela onship with Jesus and allows us to live more freely and joyfully. Thank you! Madrano March 13, 2016 Fi h Sunday of Lent Page Four PLENARY INDULGENCES APLENTY Like all previous Jubilees, the Jubilee Year of Mercy features a very special plenary indulgence (the complete remission of all temporal punishment due to sin). I wish that the Jubilee Indulgence may reach each one as a genuine experience of God's mercy, which comes to meet each person in the Face of the Father who welcomes and forgives, forge ng completely the sin commi ed. – Pope Francis, Le er to Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Sept. 1, 2015. This me around, Pope Francis is seeking to make the indulgence as widely available as possible. In the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, a Holy Door is to be opened in every cathedral around the world, as well as in par cular shrines and churches. Even though we can only obtain one plenary indulgence a day, if you perform the required ac ons for other plenary indulgences on the same day, you can s ll obtain mul ple par al indulgences. To receive the Jubilee Year indulgence, you must fulfill the usual condi ons, (specified below) and perform the indulgenced act: passing through a designated (ST. FERDINAND) Holy Door during the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy (between Dec. 8, 2015 and Nov. 20, 2016)or performing one of the corporal or spiritual works of mercy. As for the sick and the elderly, the Holy Father says, "For them it will be of great help to live their sickness and suffering as an experience of closeness to the Lord who in the mystery of his Passion, death and Resurrec on indicates the royal road which gives meaning to pain and loneliness. Living with faith and joyful hope this moment of trial, receiving communion or a ending Holy Mass and community prayer, even through the various means of communica on, will be for them the means of obtaining the Jubilee Indulgence." For the imprisoned, the Holy Father says, "They may obtain the Indulgence in the chapels of the prisons. May the gesture of direc ng their thought and prayer to the Father each me they cross the threshold of their cell signify for them their passage through the Holy Door, because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts, and is also able to transform bars into an experience of freedom." You may receive the plenary indulgence yourself, or offer it for a person in purgatory. To receive a plenary indulgence: To refresh everyone's memories, here are the normal condi ons for receiving a plenary indulgence: It is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the me the indulgenced work is completed. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addi on to being in the state of grace: have the interior disposi on of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; have sacramentally confessed their sins; receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly be er to receive it while par cipa ng in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); and pray for the inten ons of the Supreme Pon ff. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's inten ons take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or a er the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's inten ons is le to the choice of the faithful, but an Our Father and a Hail Mary are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's inten ons are required for each plenary indulgence. For the sake of those legi mately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the condi ons required (except, obviously, detachment from even venial sin). Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth. www.thedivinemercy.org Page Five Fi h Sunday of Lent HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE English Services Thursday, March 17, 2016 7:00 PM — Reconciliation Service Holy Thursday, March 24, 2016 8:00 AM — Morning Prayer 6:00 PM — Mass 9:30 PM — Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Adoration until Midnight Good Friday, March 25, 2016 8:00 AM — Morning Prayer 12:00 PM — Living Stations of the Cross 6:00 PM — Liturgy 10:00 PM — Adoration of the Tomb of Jesus until Easter Vigil Holy Saturday, March 26, 2016 8:00 AM — Morning Prayer 10:00 AM — 2:00 PM Bilingual Blessing of the Easter Baskets in the Church (every 30 min.) 8:00 PM — Bilingual Easter Vigil Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016 8:30 AM — Mass in Church 10:00 AM — Mass in Chapel 12:30 PM — Mass in Church Easter Monday, March28, 2016 8:00 AM — Mass 12:00 Noon — Mass Create a Clean Heart Conference — Saturday, April 2 The Create a Clean Heart Conference will enable the Catholic Church to truly become a "field hospital" to the many people during this Year of Mercy. My będziemy wdzięczni za każdy grosz. Chcemy w USA zrobić 8 projekcji filmu 7 w Chicago i jedną w Radomiu IL.Czas nas goni gdyż już teraz trzeba kupować wizy i bilety. Reynolds ([email protected]) So I received an unusual text message last Friday night from my friend Abhishek. Abhi and I work together and we’re always dealing with quality assurance issues, so it was nice to get a nonwork-related communica on for a change. According to his text, he was having a “Lenten Co age prayer mee ng” at his place Saturday night followed by supper, and he invited me to join him. Now, I had just been to a church mee ng at my home parish on Thursday night. I was in the middle of a church mee ng on Friday night when Abhi’s text came in. I had a four-hour church mee ng lined up for Saturday morning, and of course, Mass on Sunday. And my own parish’s Lenten mission was in play for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. Hence, I didn’t really feel the need to add another prayer service--and nearly an hour away at that--into the mix, but here’s the thing: I’ll drive a long way for a good meal. I say this because--while it was possible Abhi and his wife Oindrila would put out pizza or nachos--I figured they’d put out an Indian spread instead, and they nailed it. The evening began with chicken 65 (a spicy chicken dish) as an appe zer and closed with several dishes I can’t pronounce but each one was delish! And in the middle of the feast, a prayer service broke out for the maybe thirty people a ending, all members of an Episcopalian church serving the local Indian community in Abhi’s part of the world. The pastor led us in prayer and song to start (I had a song sheet and did the best I could, but with the words and the singing all in Hindi, I mostly mumbled…). A young man then gave a nice reflec on on the topic of pride, direc ng us to Scripture passages for God’s word on the subject. One of the passages from Ezekiel described Lucifer’s fall from grace. As the seven deadly sins go, pride is the worst of the worst. Or the best of the worst, depending on how you look at it. But pride and humility are tricky things. I don’t think it’s wrong to be proud of (and thankful for) our God-given gi s. As the Apostle Paul--also referenced in the young man’s review--put it: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” Besides, as soon as I say, “I’m humble,” I’m not. The young man’s words gave me pause, though, and they con nue to now as I consider today’s Gospel passage, the story of the adulteress brought to Jesus by the religious elite to hear his take, given that her stoning was jus fied by the law. “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her,” he says, and one by one, they fall away. Surely, self-righteous pride fed the angry crowd as they gathered their weapons, but Jesus, who knows the human heart, touches everyone so eager to carry out the woman’s death penalty. In a sense, their own humility causes them to put down their stones. Scripture tells that if we humble ourselves before the Lord, he will li us up. No one knows what kind of long-term conversion occurred that day, but ul mately, angry hearts so ened, humility triumphed, self-righteousness gave way. Something to give all of us pause as we con nue our own journeys of conversion to Calvary and beyond.
