Ladies and Gentlemen! XX YEARS OF THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF FOLKLORE IN STRZEGOM The idea of organising the festival was risen during organising the events for the 750th anniversary of gaining town rights for Strzegom. In 1992 the folk group „Kostrzanie” organised th event "Kostrzanie's friends". Most of the groups preforming during this event were Polish folk groups met during festivals in Pyrzyce, Świnoujście, and during the Week of Culture of Beskidy. In 1993 the organisers of the festival were The Centre of Culture and the group "Kostrzanie". The event was named The Festival of Folklore and then the International Festival of Folklore, as the organisers started cooperation with the Polish section of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts – CIOFF. The idea of CIOFF is preserving the folk culture, specific for every country and recognized as their greatest value. Exchanging and presenting the cultural heritage is supposed to keep the traditions and customs. The patronage of CIOFF is the guarantee of high level of the groups. That is why we can see the best groups from all over the world. The experts from CIOFF are great help for us. They first select groups for the festival and thanks to them the artistic level is higher every year. The International Festival of Folklore lasts for the whole week. On Monday arrive the foreign groups which were taking part in the Week of Culture of Beskidy. On Tuesday and Wednesday they give concerts in towns of Lower Silesia. On Thursday the festival concerts begin in Strzegom. The concerts take place on two stages: on the Market - concerts of the folk instrumental groups, and on the stadium - the main concerts. Apart from the concerts, the groups take part in many events during the festival: "The Friendship Meeting", the National Evenings in Strzegom and Kostrza. Young people from the whole world take part in different games, with music. Each group show the others their traditional, national games and plays. This form of entertainment was started durong the Vth Festival of Folklore. We were surprised by the effects - very strong integration of different cultures and international friendhips. Other forms of entertainment are football and volleyball matches Poland - Guests. Every year there is also the "Night with Folklore" - the fire for the festival guests, where everybody sing and dance together. It is very important for the groups to have direct contact with other participants and audience. For this reason we organised in 2000 an event named "The World Market". On Sunday - the last day of the festival - in the centre of Strzegom there are small stands, where each group serve dishes charecteristic for their country. "The World Market" is traditionally opened with the Polonez, Polish traditional dance, performed by all the groups together. There are also different workshops to improve dancing and musical skills. They are held by experts. We were honored to have many famous artists like: Mirosława Bobrowska, Grażyna Dąbrowska, Aleksandra Bogucka, Janina Kalicińska, Jurij Wojnarowski, Bogusław Linett, Edward Błażek, Jerzy Chmiel, Gerard Nowak, Ewa Piasecka – Sas, Ludwik Rok, Jerzy Dynia. A very important fact, which decided that the festival is organised in our town, was the nomination from the Polish Section of CIOFF, that is why in 1997 Strzegom joined the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts CIOFF, and from 1999 it is regularly in the International Calendar of Events CIOFF. In 2001 during the Xth International Festival of Folklore we gained a CERTIFICATE of Polish Section of CIOFF. In this way our fesyival was recognised as one of the best folk festivals in Europe. The festival in Strzegom is not only a part of our region but aslo the whole country. During the nineteen years of the International Festival of Folklore we could see 337 folk groups from 49 countries of six continents. The y presented various forms of folklore: from customs of the Far East, African countries, both Americas, the Antipodes and almost every European country. It is also 13.300 artisis, 550 hours of concerts and 4 months of festival, 270.000 direct audience and thanks to media partners - millions of viewers, radio listeners and readers. The festival is not only numbers. There are also people emotionally connected with the festival from the very beginning: Wioletta Urban – The Director of the Festiwal and Zbigniew Suchyta – the Artistic Director. There are also announcers, who tried to present the folklore from the wprld to the audience. We had natural highlanders: Anna i Kazimierz Lassakowie, Józef Broda, Jadwiga Jurasz and the journalist of Polish Radio Wrocław – Małgorzata Majeran – Kokott. This year the XXth Jubilee International Festival of Folklore will take place on 9 – 14 August. Like the previous ones, this festival is going to be special and unique thanks to the guests invited and great audience. This year the Festival is going to be held under the patronage of The Minister of Culture and Art – Bogdan Zdrojewski.
