ABSTRACT. Stachowski Zbigniew, Akademicki etos i pieniądze [Academic Ethos and Money]. Bariery rozwoju polskich uczelni [Barriers to Development of Polish Higher Education Institutions] edited by Z. Drozdowicz, M. Iwaszkiewicz – „Człowiek i Społeczeństwo” vol. XXVIII, Poznań 2008, pp. 61-68. Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISBN 978-83-2321861-6. ISSN 0239-3271. The author of this article points out that the shape of Polish higher education in the forthcoming years, including relations between public and private education, will be determined by an economic factor as a basic one. Such an economic dictate provokes an academic community to a redefinition of its traditional mission and results in resignation from fulfilling by higher education institutions their cultural function as well as looking at them in categories of firm and profit. Higher education institutions are turning into business corporations. The second important factor determining the status of Polish higher education institutions is mass education which revolutionized higher education institutions but at the same time influenced in a negative way the academic ethos. It means that, on the one hand academics more and more often acquiesce to “mediocrity” and, tolerate it, and on the other hand, promote more and more badly educated young people.
