ABOUT LOCATION
Historic Wieliczka Salt Mine is the oldest Polish enterprise. From the 13th century until 1772, together with Bochnia salt mine
it composed the Kraków salt works – the only mining facility operating continuously since the Middle Ages. So far the oldest
discovered part of the Wieliczka salt works mined with the use of mechanical methods is the surroundings of mount
(mineshaft) Goryszowski from the second half of the 13th century.
The mine has 9 levels, the first – Bono – is 64 metres deep; the lowest is located 327 metres below the ground. The joint
length of the tunnels connecting the excavations (drifts, ramps, chambers, lakes, shafts) exceeds 300 km. The volume of the
excavation complex is about 7.5 mln m³.
The salt mine interiors attracts film and TV producers ever since the end of the Second World War. Among films shot in the
mine there are: “On the Silver Globe” (dir. Andrzej Żuławski), “Sexmission” (dir. Juliusz Machulski) or “The Mill and the Cross”
(dir. Lech Majewski).
