DRAGONS of the 20th CENTURY
1.1. The Komodo Dragon, also known as Varanus Komodoensis, is the world’s
largest lizard. It is quite dangerous – it can grow up to three metres in length
and it weighs up to seventy kilos. Although the dragons are big and heavy,
they can run pretty fast – almost twenty kilometres per hour!
1.2. The Komodo Dragon uses its sense of smell to catch its victims. Despite its
ability to run fast, it prefers to sit quietly in the grass and wait for something
big and tasty to appear. One bite of the dragon is so toxic that it can even kill
a horse!
1.3. Every female lays about twenty eggs. Dragons are born in spring. They eat
insects and live in the trees so that they don’t become anybody’s food. Five
years later they are grown up and ready to start a new life on the ground.

Why ‘America’?
It is quite surprising that the name ‘America’ has nothing to do
with the name of the man who actually discovered it. 2.1. Here’s the reason. To the end of his days Columbus believed that he
had discovered parts of Asia. The man who corrected his mistake
was Amerigo Vespucci. He was an Italian sailor, who travelled along
South America. During his voyages he sent some letters to a friend
Its existence was unknown to anyone. Some
in Europe. 2.2. several years later, the letters were read by a German geographer.
2.3. He immediately thought Vespucci was correct. 2.4. Therefore, he named the new land after Vespucci’s first name.
A. The scientist was drawing a new map of the world.
B. He travelled on a ship named Tierra del Fuego.
C. Like Vespucci, the geographer believed that the land was a new continent.
D. He wrote that the coasts were a part of a new continent.
E. Why didn’t European geographers name the land after Columbus?

3.1. Simon
I’m looking for a present for my
12‑year-old brother. He knows a lot
about animals and science. But he gets
easily discouraged when the game rules
are complicated, or he can’t answer the
questions correctly. Since he hasn’t got
his own computer, I would like to get
him a board game.
3.2. Rita
I need a gift for my sister. She’s a bright
but rather impatient bank manager.
Last year, she got a computer game,
but she didn’t like it, as the rules were
complicated and there was a time limit.
That’s why I’m looking for something
different this year.
3.3. Alex
I want to buy a present for my brother.
He’s a primary school student so I need
a game with simple rules and easy
questions. I need a game which he
could play on his computer.
A.
Smarty is a game containing questions from five
categories: Books, Films, Sport, Animals, and Science.
A perfect present for adults who have a wide range of
knowledge. To become a winner, you have to answer

under 13. The rules are simple: players watch short
films about animals or sport, and answer questions.

C.
Don’t feel discouraged by the complicated rules of
the Santo board game. When you have learnt the
rules, you will be playing the game every day! There
are different question levels and categories – from
easy ones about animals to extra hard ones about
technology. Only creative and patient players win the
‘Santo’ game.
D.
The rules of the KnowAll board game aren’t
complicated, but you need to answer the questions
quickly, as there’s a time limit. The questions are set at
different difficulty levels, so the game is suitable for all
ages.
