Rzeczpospolita makes a good start
Rzeczpospolita holds on to its lead in the January ranking of the most opinion making media prepared
by the Institute of Media Monitoring. Its top position on the list results from the reports connected
with the Polish politics and the controversy over the dismissal of Treasury Minister Andrzej Mikosz.
However, it is Gazeta Wyborcza which was the most often cited medium of 2005, since its publications
were referred to 13602 times.
The January analysis has been made on the basis of 4641 press, radio and television publications registered
between January 1st and 31st, 2006. Journalists referred to the information reported by other media 6223
times (3004 press publications, 2163 TV and 1056 radio ones).
Most of the references related to Rzeczpospolita (Chart 1), which was quoted 1478 times. Rzeczpospolita
outruns Gazeta Wyborcza by 214 publications, extending its advantage gained in December 2005, when the
disparity between the dailies amounted to 92 materials. Życie Warszawy holds on to the third position (626).
There is a change on the fourth place, though. In January it is occupied by Wprost.
Rzeczpospolita also won in the ranking of media quoted the most frequently by sources other than press
reviews.

January brought some new issues- media commented on the tragedy in Katowice, where nearly 70 people
died under the caved-in roof of the covered market; there were reports of the scandal connected with the
dismissal of Andrzej Mikosz, about Minister Wasserman allegedly searching for “goods”, about the
beatification process of John Paul II and the issue of vetting. Traditional mentions in press reviews, as well
as the Polish politics were most frequently quoted.
The Wprost weekly regained its leading position in the ranking of the most frequently quoted nationwide
weeklies. It was followed by Polityka- the runner-up, and Newsweek- ranked third. As for tabloids, Fakt is in
the lead, overrunning Super Express by 11 references.
86 percent references concerned nationwide media, while the remaining14 percent – local editions. Media
quotations from Mazowieckie province were the most abundant with Życie Warszawy holding to its
