MODAL VERBS – PART II
Must – musieć; wyraża przymus, np.: You must do your homework. (Musisz
robić zadania domowe.) oraz przypuszczenie, np.: You must know each other very well.
(Musicie znać się bardzo dobrze.)
Needn’t – nie musieć; wyraża brak przymusu, np.: You needn’t hurry up. The
concert has been cancelled. (Nie musisz się spieszyć. Koncert został odwołany.)
Should/ought to – powinieneś; wyraża powinność, np.: You should always do
your homework. (Zawsze powinieneś odrabiać zadania domowe.) oraz radę, np.: You
shoud go to the doctor’s. (Powinieneś pójść do lekarza.)
Shall – wyraża propozycję zrobienia czegoś dla innej osoby, np.: Shall I help you
with your homework? (Czy pomóc ci w zadaniu domowym?)
May/might – może; wyraża przypuszczenie, np. I may come to the party. (Być
może przyjdę na tą imprezę.) lub bardzo uprzejmą, oficjalną prośbę, np.: May I speak to
Mrs. Brown? (Czy mogę rozmawiać z Panią Brown?)
Can – móc, potrafić; wyraża pozwolenie, np.: I can go to the party. (Mogę pójść
na tą imprezę. Mam na to pozwolenie.) lub umiejętność, np.: I can swim. (Umiem
pływać.)
Could – mogłem, mógłbym; wyraża umiejętność w przeszłości, np.: Icould sing
when I was a child. (Umiałem śpiewać kiedy byłem dzieckiem.) oraz uprzejmą prośbę,
np.: Could you repeat, please? (Czy mógłbyś powtórzyć?)
Mustn’t – nie wolno; wyraża brak pozwolenia, np.: You mustn’t shout in a
church. (Nie wolno krzyczeć w kościele.)
! Have to – musieć; wyraża przymus; jako czasownik modalny jest wyjątkowy,
ponieważ jest odmienny – posiada odpowiednie formy w poszczególnych czasach
gramatycznych, potrzebuje operatorów do tworzenia pytań i przeczeń, np.: I had to/didn’t
have to be at home at 10 yesterday. (Musiałem/Nie musiałem być wczoraj w domu o 10.)
