[Archive:] A Collection of Pamphlets, Books, and Ephemera belonging to a Polish
Resistance Fighter: dating from throughout World War II and the Early Years of
Soviet Occupation (1940-59)
An important collection of materials related to Poland, the German
invasion and occupation, the Polish Underground and Home Army, the
Warsaw Uprising, Polish politics and government during and after World
War II, and Polish émigré affairs. The collection belonged to a man who
lived with a Polish émigré resistance fighter and his wife at a farmhouse in
upstate New York. The couple had met in England during the war, when
he was a member of the Underground and she was a nurse: it is likely that
their lifelong friend had also been a resistance fighter, and that some of the
material in the collection was acquired by all three.
Most of the material in the collection dates from the wartime period.
It consists of 168 pamphlets and books (mostly pamphlets), 11 periodicals
(each title consisting of multiple loose issues: a total of 126 issues), and
some miscellaneous related ephemera (laid-in clippings, correspondence,
etc.). Most of the pamphlets and books (and a few periodicals) have the
same ownership signature on the title page, along with a small inventory
number written in manuscript. Several also have the initials “AK” written in manuscript: Armia Krajowa [The Polish
Home Army], and a few dozen have an ink stamp of one of several Polish diaspora or relief organizations (including
the London-based “Relief Society for Poles” the Polish Red Cross “Polski Czerwony Krzyz” or “P.C.K.”, and other
organizations. Interspersed throughout are a few dozen items with some scuffing and short tears to the edges and some
scattered staining, overall very good.
Among the pamphlets and books, well over half (about 120) date from the war years (1940-45), about 25 date from
1946, with most of rest dating from 1947-48. Most were printed outside of Poland during the German and Soviet
occupations: in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Rome, London, and elsewhere. Also included are several printed clandestinely
in Warsaw. Among the periodicals (which circulated among members of the Home Army, Underground, and
Government-in-exile), 4 date from the war years (about 25 issues); and 7 (about 100 issues) were published after the
war by Polish émigré organizations based in London. Many of the titles in the collection were likely circulated among
Polish émigré members of the Home Army/Underground, and the new Polish government-in-exile, which had moved
from Paris to London after the fall of France in June 1940.
Included in the collection is a pamphlet inscribed by Ryszard Bialous (Kpt. “Jerzy”), scoutmaster Captain of the
AK-Szare Szeregi and Commander of the Batalion Zoska before and during the Warsaw Uprising; and a book inscribed
by Henryk Baginski: co-founder of The Polish Rifle Squads (a pro-independence paramilitary organization), and
Colonel of Engineers in the Polish Army. Other notable items include one of the earliest pamphlets published by the
anti-communist Polish Peasant Party: Swiatla z Podziemi (1944), and two important wartime periodicals: Na Szlaku
Kresowej, published in Italy by the Home Army for soldiers of the Polish Second Corps in Italy; and Na Strazy [On
Guard], published by leading political exiles (followers of Jozef Pilsudaki) in Jerusalem. Among the notable post-war
items are the London-based émigré periodicals published for political exiles, soldiers and Underground members of the
diaspora, and two unpublished mimeographs: a play by Zbigniew Butrym (“Martyrologia Konspiracji i Powstania”),
and a collection of songs by Edward Chudzynski. Both were presented in a 1947 program celebrating the third
anniversary of the Warsaw uprising.
An historically important collection containing many scarce wartime publications, documenting the life of an
unknown Polish resistance fighter. Even with only rudimentary Polish language skills, it is clear that the collection
contains much important material, but it is also likely that we’ve missed the significance of some other of the material.
Additional details about each item in the collection (gleaned from catalog records and archives) are provided in the
following Finding Aid, divided into seven sections:
I. German Invasion and Occupation; II. Home Army/Polish Underground; III. Warsaw Uprising; IV. Concentration
Camps; V. Politics and Government/Polish-Soviet Relations; VI. Miscellaneous; VII. Post-war Periodicals published by
