ABSTRACT The goal of the dissertation is to investigate the influence of electromagnetic field (EMF) on the people with metallic implants. The analysis of this influence has been focused on the situations in which the person with the implant is subjected to electromagnetic therapy. Then the intensity of EMF exceeds the values given in norms, thus the concern is evoked whether patients with metallic implants should be admitted to such therapies. The results reached in the dissertation help to answer the above question. In the dissertation the numerical model that simulates the influence of metallic implant on the eddy currents distribution in the area of a limb subjected to implantation during magnetotherapy has been presented. The first part of the dissertation summarizes the present state of art in the area of relations between EMF and living objects and describes some biomedical consequences of the above relations with emphasis on metallic implants. Special attention has been concentrated on the norms and standards referring to EMF. In the second part of the dissertation the results of the author’s research have been presented. The author invented some numerical models to analyze bioelectromagnetic phenomena occurring while people with metallic implants are subjected to magnetotherapy. The distribution of EMF generated by the coil applicators in their vicinity has been determined. The model simulates the influence of metallic implant on eddy current distribution in the tissue surrounding the implant while the magnetotherapy is proceeded. The need of some changes, which take into account the presence of metallic implant, has been shown. The theses of the dissertation are as follows: The presence of metallic implants inside the human body changes the distribution of eddy currents in surrounding tissues in an essential way, In the case of implanting a metallic object, one should revise and verify the standards which limit EMF inside the human body. In the dissertation the analysis has been focused on EMF of low frequency – it results from the frequency used in magnetotherapy. The high frequency can evoke some other problems, like the thermal ones. The results of simulation conducted in the dissertation can provide a tool for better fitting of treatment parameters, as well as for better estimation of the treatment.
