INTRODUCTION Passive harmonic filters remain still the most often applied method for reducing harmonic current distortion. Simplicity of their construction and low cost are their main advantages. Influence of line impedance on filtering results and resonance phenomenon between the main impedance of a power system or the load are weak points of those filters. A further disadvantage - insufficient filtration efficiency – is caused by the limited quality factor of inductors. Using passive harmonics filters under distorted voltage sources may also produce undesired results, which can be minimized by proper passive filter planning [1, 3]. Better results in electrical energy quality improvement can be achieved by using Active Power Filters (APF) [1], but this method is much more expensive. Therefore hybrid filters M. Pasko, D. Buła 30 which combine advantages of both methods [1, 2, 4, 5] are more suitable solution. In the hybrid filters the required rating of the active filter is significantly smaller than the one of a conventional standalone active filter. Moreover disadvantages of the passive filter are strongly reduced. Analysis of hybrid filter under distorted voltage system compared to passive filter has been presented in the paper. Relevant experimental results have also been shown. a) b) Fig. 1. System with hybrid power active filter (a). Diagram of hybrid filter control system (b) Rys. 1. DISCUSSED HYBRID ACTIVE POWER FILTER One of the most often applied topologies of hybrid power filters is shunt active power filter connected in series to the passive filter (fig. 1a.) In this case control system is meant to control voltage inverter so that its output voltages would be proportional to high harmonics of source currents. In effect characteristic of filtration is improved and disadvantages of the passive filter are reduced [4, 5]. Diagram of control system has been presented in fig. 1b. For the realization of the control algorithm the TMS320F28335 floating-point digital signal controller has been used. In this case dq synchronous frame control strategy has been applied [1, 4]. The dq transformation and used external phase locked loop enable correct work of control system under distorted voltage system conditions. Passive filter consists of two branches for each phase. The branches are tuned to the most often occurring harmonic frequency in the three-phase systems i.e. 5th and 7th. 3. COMPARISON ANALYSIS OF PASSIVE AND HYBRID FILTER FILTRATION CHARACTERISTICS UNDER DISTORTED VOLTAGE SYSTEM CONDITIONS Precise analysis of attenuation factor, which is a relation between the supply harmonic current and the load harmonic current, was presented in previous works of the authors [2, 4]. Hybrid active power… 31 Simplified linear single-phase equivalent circuits for high harmonics presented in fig. 2 have been used in this case. Both contain high harmonics voltage sources Eh. High harmonics of source current for system with passive filter is given by: I sh s I Lh s Eh s Z Fh s Z sh s Z Fh s Z sh s Z Fh s (1) There is a new component proportional to harmonic source voltage Eh. It should be noticed that it is strongly dependent on value of Zsh and ZFh impedances and in some cases it can lead to damages of passive filters [6]. High harmonics of source current for system with analyzed hybrid filter is given by: I sh s I Lh s Eh s Z Fh s Zsh s Z Fh s KK1 (s) Zsh s Z Fh s KK1 (s) (2) where: K1 s K HP F(s j1 ) s j1 2 s j1 2 s j1 02 2 (3) Component proportional to harmonic source voltage Eh for hybrid filter depends also on K gain. It causes decrease of Eh voltage influence on source current. Fig. 2. Equivalent circuits for high harmonics for system with: a) passive filter, b) hybrid filter Rys. 2. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Experimental tests for the discussed filters have been run under following conditions: |E|1,2,3 = 63 V, Pload = 1.3 kW, THDu = 3.2 %, Ls = 0.8 mH, C5 = 75 μF, L5 = 5.4 mH, Q5 = 8, C7 = 52 μF, L7 = 4 mH, Q7 = 22, K = 20, UDC = 60 V, fPWM = 25 kHz. The results have been presented in figure 3. Figure 4a shows comparison of source current harmonic distortion for both cases and for passive filter under sinusoidal voltages. Values of source current for passive filter under sinusoidal voltages have been calculated using M. Pasko, D. Buła 32 equation 1. Harmonic distortion was here different from real case – it was caused by high harmonic in source voltage (from other nonlinear loads in the system - Eh voltage in fig. 2). Hybrid filter allowed to considerably decrease current distortion and Eh voltage influence was unnoticeable. a) b) Fig. 3. CONCLUSIONS The presented analysis and experimental results proved that harmonic source voltage influence for hybrid filter was unnoticeable. The comparison presented in fig. 4b shows that K gain equals to 15 is sufficient for proper high harmonic compensation. Reduction of disadvantages of the passive filter and lower cost then pure active power filter are reasons why hybrid active power filters are good solution in distorted voltage system conditions. a) b) Fig. 4.
