R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by singer Michael Stipe,
guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry. One of the first popular
alternative rock bands, R.E.M. gained early attention due to Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar
style and Stipe's unclear vocals. R.E.M. released its first single, "Radio Free Europe", in 1981
on the independent record label Hib-Tone. The single was followed by the Chronic Town EP in
1982, the band's first release on I.R.S. Records. In 1983, the group released its critically
acclaimed debut album, Murmur, and built its reputation over the next few years through
subsequent releases, constant touring, and the support of college radio. Following years of
underground success, R.E.M. achieved a mainstream hit in 1987 with the single "The One I
Love". The group signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1988, and began to espouse political and
environmental concerns while playing large arenas worldwide.
By the early 1990s, when alternative rock began to experience broad mainstream success,
R.E.M. was viewed by subsequent acts such as Nirvana and Pavement as a pioneer of the
genre and released its two most commercially successful albums, Out of Time (1991) and

Automatic for the People (1992), which veered from the band's established sound. R.E.M.'s
1994 release, Monster, was a return to a more rock-oriented sound. The band began its first
tour in six years to support the album; the tour was marred by medical emergencies suffered by
three band members. In 1996, R.E.M. re-signed with Warner Bros. for a reported US$80 million,
at the time the most expensive recording contract in history. The following year, Bill Berry left
the band, while Buck, Mills, and Stipe continued the group as a trio. Through some changes in
musical style, the band continued its career into the next decade with mixed critical and
commercial success. In 2007, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

R.E.M. – amerykańska grupa rockowa powstała w Athens w 1980 roku. 21 września 2011 roku
grupa podjęła decyzję o zakończeniu działalności po 31 latach istnienia zespołu.
R.E.M. (skrót od ang. Rapid Eye Movement – jedna z faz snu) była grupą, której muzyka łączyła
elementy punk rocka i rocka alternatywnego. Grupa złagodziła punkowe brzmienie,
wprowadzając delikatną, jangle popową grę gitar i mamroczące śpiewy Michaela Stipe'a.
Pozostawiono jednak spontaniczność i żywiołowość muzyki punkowej. Charakterystyczny śpiew
Stipe'a, niekiedy nazywany "radosnymi pomrukami" stał się wyróżnikiem grupy. Przez pierwsze
lata swej działalności grupa regularnie wydawała albumy, jednocześnie intensywnie
koncertując. Z czasem brzmienie grupy częściowo się zmieniło, nabierając odcienia
"melancholijnej zadumy". Coraz częściej w aranżacjach utworów zaczęła się pojawiać delikatnie
grająca sekcja smyczków. Także w tekstach grupy daje się wyczuć intelektualny niepokój. W
połowie lat osiemdziesiątych R.E.M. staje się jedną z najpopularniejszych grup stylu college
rock, a wkrótce potem zapewnia sobie miejsce w czołówce amerykańskiego rocka głównego
nurtu. Do największych przebojów grupy należą: "Losing My Religion", piosenka "Shiny Happy
People" (nagrana z Kate Pierson z The B-52's), "Everybody Hurts", czy przejmująca w swej
wymowie "Drive". Z czasem R.E.M. zmieniło styl grania na jeszcze bardziej rockowy, czego
przykładem były kolejne dwie płyty z lat 1994 i 1996, Monster i New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Jedna
z płyt grupy, Automatic for the People została sklasyfikowana na 247 miejscu listy 500 albumów
wszech czasów wg magazynu Rolling Stone
W roku 1997 grupę opuścił perkusista Bill Berry. W roku 1998 ukazała się płyta Up, był to
pierwszy album nagrany przez R.E.M. jako trio. Kolejna płyta, która ukazała się w tym samym
składzie to album Reveal z 2001 roku. W roku 2003 nadszedł czas na podsumowanie okresu z
lat 1988-2003, składanką największych przebojów R.E.M. pt. In Time: The Best Of 1988-2003.
Wydanie płyty poprzedziła trasa koncertowa, w czasie której R.E.M. zagrał 10 lipca na

warszawskim Torwarze koncert w Polsce. W roku 2004 zespół wydał album Around the Sun, na
którym znalazła się piosenka "Leaving New York". Wydanie płyty uświetniła kolejna wielka trasa
koncertowa po całym świecie, która zakończyła się 10 lipca 2005 na Millennium Stadium w
Cardiff (Wielka Brytania). W 2007 zespół został wprowadzony do Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
21 września 2011 zespół R.E.M. ogłosił zakończenie działalności. ---wiki
