National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes, Emmitsburg, MD. 21727. Driving time - 1.5 hours, right

Błogosławiony czas Wielkiego Postu
W Środę Popielcową rozpoczęliśmy okres Wielkiego Postu. Na znak
nawrócenia i pokuty nasze głowy zostały posypane popiołem.
Zgodnie ze starożytną tradycją, potwierdzoną i współcześnie przez
Katechizm Kościoła Katolickiego, wszystkie piątki w roku mają
charakter pokutny, bo są pamiątką dnia, w którym Chrystus umarł za nasze grzechy na Krzyżu.
Zgodnie z decyzją Episkopatu USA w Wielkim Poście znajduje to wyraz w powstrzymaniu się od
spożywania pokarmów mięsnym. W pozostałe piątki roku można tutaj w Ameryce tę
wstrzemięźliwość zastąpić innym czynem pokutnym.
We continue Lent observance which began Ash Wednesday. During Lent, the baptized
are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults. This is a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have
declared their desire to become Catholics.
The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The key to
fruitful observance of these practices is to recognize their link to baptismal renewal. We are called
not just to abstain from sin during Lent , but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers
of Christ.. The baptizimal waters recall those waters in which we were baptized into Christ’s death,
died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.
GUIDELINES FOR LENTEN OBSERVANCE
Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Fasting binds people 18 years old up to 59
years old, unless prevented by poor health. On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two other
meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s own needs. Eating between
meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken.
Abstinence binds all persons who are at least 14 years old, unless prevented by poor
health. On days of abstinence, the consumption of meat is not allowed. The Church strongly
encourages the observance of Friday abstinence, however, failure to do so is not regarded as a sin.
Lent is a penitential season and as such religious practices such as daily Mass, reception of the
Sacrament of Penance, the devotion of the Stations of the Cross, works of charity and justice, and
acts of self-denial are highly encouraged.
