Studia Quaternaria, vol. 22: 35. Conferences 6th Subfossil Cladocera Workshop The 6th Subfossil Cladocera Workshop was held in the town of Èeské Budìjovice, the capital of South Bohemia, in the Czech Republic, on October 11–12, 2004. The meeting was organized by Kateøina Mikolášová-Nováková at the Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of South Bohemia. The father of the Subfossil Cladocera workshops was Atte Korhola, who organized the first two workshops in Helsinki in 1999 and 2000 with the aim to establish an informal gathering of people who work on subfossil remains of Cladocera in lake sediments. The workshops were concentrated mainly on taxonomical questions – participants brought problematic or “amazing” findings for the others to see, admire, and identify. One of goals was also teaching; several young scientists have learned to identify their first remains during the workshops. Since then, the workshops have been held every year and have maintained the original informality, taxonomical orientation, and teaching. When the 2001 workshop was held at the Department of Geology, University of Helsinki, the Department staff described it later as follows: “It was a very curious workshop. All those people were sitting all day, looking at the microscope, and from time to time there were loud bursts of laughter. Then they again continued with the microscopes”. Till now, the following Subfossil Cladocera workshops have been held: 1st workshop, Helsinki 1999. Laboratory of Physical Geography, University of Helsinki; hosted by Atte Korhola. Participants: Milla Rautio, Kaarina Sarmaja-Korjonen, Gavin Simpson, Krystyna Szeroczyñska. 2nd workshop, Helsinki 2000. Department of Ecology and Systematics, Division of Hydrobiology, University of Helsinki; hosted by Atte Korhola. Participants: Mari Hakojärvi, Dave Porinchu, Milla Rautio, Kaarina Sarmaja-Korjonen, Gavin Simpson, Krystyna Szeroczyñska. 3rd workshop, Helsinki 2001. Department of Geology, University of Helsinki; hosted by Kaarina Sarmaja-Korjonen. Participants: Tom Davidson, Micha³ Gasiorowski, Giri Raj Gattel, Atte Korhola, Kateøina Mikolášová, Milla Rautio, Gavin Simpson, Krystyna Szeroczyñska. 4th workshop, Warsaw 2002. Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences; hosted by Krystyna Szeroczyñska. Participants: Giri Raj Gattel, Piotr Kulesza, Kateøina Mikolášová, Monika Niska, Mirva Nykänen, Kaarina Sarmaja-Korjonen, Susanna Siitonen. 5th workshop, Helsinki 2003. Environmental Change Research Unit (ECRU), Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki; hosted by Atte Korhola and Susanna Siitonen. Participants: Susanne Lildal Amsinck, Rikke Bjerring, Tom Davidson, Micha³ Gasiorowski, Giri Raj Gattel, Dan Hoare, Karina Jensen, Emma Lindgren, Mirva Nykänen, Kaarina SarmajaKorjonen, Elwira Sienkiewicz, Gavin Simpson, Krystyna Szeroczyñska. 6th workshop, Èeské Budìjovice 2004. Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Palaeoecology of Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of South Bohemia; hosted by Kateøina Mikolášová-Nováková. Participants: Micha³ G¹siorowski, Anna Halkiewicz, Zuzana Hoøická, Ryszard Kornijów, Liisa Nevalainen, Monika Niska, Mirva Nykänen, Jaroslaw Pajakowski, Miroslava Praáková, Kaarina Sarmaja-Korjonen, Krystyna Szeroczyñska, Edyta Zawisza. The 7th workshop will be held in 2005 prior to the International Symposium Cladocera 2005 (Herzberg, Switzerland), and the 8th workshop in Prague in 2006. The 6th Subfossil Cladocera Workshop was the first one with presentations by young researchers. The program consisted of oral presentations (about newly completed results, running projects, as well as partial or methodological results), microscoping, and discussions on interesting or problematic findings of Cladocera remains (projected or viewed in a microscope), and was chaired by Krystyna Szeroczyñska and Kaarina Sarmaja-Korjonen. The atmosphere of the workshop was informal and friendly but very work-intensive. The participants decided to publish papers and short papers of Subfossil Cladocera workshops in Studia Quaternaria. Five short papers presented at the 6th workshop were edited with the help of Z. Hoøická and they are published in the subsequent section of this volume of SQ. Zuzana Hoøická & Kaarina Sarmaja-Korjonen
