COURSE DESCRIPTION (OPIS KURSÓW) The aim of the courses: The main objective of Reading and Discussion 1 and 2 courses is to train students in perceptive reading of authentic English from a range of relevant academic fields, as well as to equip them with discussion skills necessary for further studies in English. The courses focus on reading for information while sensitizing students to the role of style and rhetoric in content presentation. LEARNING OUTCOMES (EFEKTY KSZTAŁCENIA) class, 30 study class, 30 study class, 20 study class, 20 study In terms of KNOWLEDGE, by the end of both courses, students will know: the dynamics of written and spoken communication basic text genres and text types strategies that enhance reading comprehension and guide the reading process the role of para-textual elements in academic texts (footnotes, introductions, summaries, bibliographies etc.) the importance of pre-reading activities and re-reading in the learning process In terms of SKILLS, by the end of both courses, students will be able to: read general, academic, literary, journalistic and specialist texts of increasing length and difficulty use various techniques of extracting information from texts (close reading, skimming for main ideas, scanning for specific information) identify the author’s point of view; distinguish opinions from verifiable facts identify text and paragraph structure (topic sentences, main concepts, supporting ideas, conclusions) deal with new vocabulary while reading (as well as expand vocabulary through reading) take notes, paraphrase and summarize texts for the purpose of presentation / discussion of main ideas ask for clarification answer text-based questions and present arguments elicit views of others and present their own ideas express and respond to personal feelings and attitudes express and argue points of view, express agreement and disagreement participate in spontaneous spoken discourse state their point clearly, coherently and confidently Obligatory resources: ----Obowiązkowa literatura: -------
