Ethnologia Polona vol. 25: 2004:
Manifestation of Tibetan Culture in Poland

This article is an attempt of gathering and systemizing all the links between Tibet and
Poland. The two countries are connected in many aspects: political relationships, a similar
history, geo-policy, and cultural aspects including the tender matter of religion. Speaking of
number of religious movements in Poland, Buddhism holds the second position. In this article
I try to answer the question who the Polish Buddhist is, and how the Polish practicing
communities work.
For such a distant place, Tibet is associated with many ideas, and contrary to Galtung’s
theory, they are inspired not only by the negative news bradocast by the media. I did my best
to prove it on a survey research. Besides I present the history and current status of the
involvement of Polish politicians and NGOs, which try to support the Tibetan nation
politically and through charitable actions.
Tibet also means the charismatic person of Dalai Lama, whose two visits to Poland are
described in details. At the end I present Tibet as a theme dealt with in Polish literature.

Artykuł stanowi próbę zebrania i usystematyzowania wszelkich aspektów związanych z
Tybetem w naszym kraju. Tybet i Polskę łączy wiele, i to nie tylko koneksje polityczne,
podobna historia, geopolityka, ale i aspekty kulturowe dotykające tak subtelnej materii, jaką
jest religia. Pod względem ilości zarejestrowanych ruchów religijnych w Polsce buddyzm
plasuje się na drugim miejscu. W artykule tym staram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie kim jest
polski buddysta oraz jak wyglądają i funkcjonują polskie społeczności praktykujących.
Mimo odległości Tybet wywołuje u Polaków mnóstwo skojarzeń i nie zawsze wbrew
teorii Galtunga, są to wyobrażenia powstałe pod wpływem negatywnych informacji, które
docierają do nas przede wszystkim przez media. Starałem się to wykazać opisanymi w tekście
badaniami ankietowymi. Ponadto opisałem historię i obecne zaangażowanie polskich
polityków oraz organizacji pozarządowych, które politycznie bądź humanitarnie starają się
wspierać naród tybetański.
Tybet to także charyzmatyczna postać Dalajlamy, którego dwie wizyty w Polsce zostały
tu szczegółowo opisane. W zakończeniu ukazałem na wybranych przykładach, jak Tybet
funkcjonuje w polskiej literaturze.
