International conference of architects for social responsibility
- With the attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001, the illegal Iraq war and the abandonment of international agreements for containment of nuclear arms, the world has become closer to a global war. Despite
the collapse of the Soviet Union the world has not become more peaceful. Agreements on disarmament are
not implemented. If the resources going to armament would instead be used for peaceful purposes, some
roots of conflict could be eradicated, says professor Dick Urban Vestbro, chairman of ARC•PEACE at its
international meeting in Gdansk.
ARC•PEACE is a non-government organisation of architects, designers and planners with a
consultative status in the United Nations. It serves as a global network for building a peaceful, just and
an environmentally sustainable future. It opposes all types of weapons of mass destruction and demands
that the resources used for armament should be used for peaceful purposes, e.g. to address the disastrous
situation for human settlement in developing countries.
One afternoon of the conference is set aside to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of the Second World War. Conference participants will distribute leaflets for
the total elimination of nuclear arms and for peaceful resolution of conflict. The nuclear arsenals of the so
called new nuclear weapons states like India and Pakistan are threatening the world to the same extent as
the stockpiles of the "old" ones or the "non-declared". We must say clearly: There is no alternative to the
abolition of all nuclear weapons. They were alerting public opinion to the use of weapons of mass destruction
(WMPs, "dirty bombs") by terrorists but also to the threat of resuming nuclear testing
At the conference members from Europe, Africa, USA and Asia participate.

Atak na World Trade Centre w NY w roku 2001, wojna w Iraku, zaniechanie miedzynarodowych porozumien
dot. nie uzywania broni nuklearnej spowodowaly ze swiat narazony jest na globalne niebezpieczenstwa i
konfikty. Pomimo, podzialu Zwiazku Radzieckiego na niepodlegle kraju atmosfera nie stala sie bardziej
pokojowa. Pakty rozbrojeniowe nie sa wdrazane.. Gdyby srodki przeznaczone na zbrojenie zostaly
zaangazowane do celow pokojowych niektore zrodla zgrozen zostalyby zazegnane - mowi prof. Dick Urban

ARC•PEACE jest pozarzadowa organizacja zrzeszajaca architektow, projektantow I planistow. Ma
ona status konsultanta przy ONZ. Celem organizacji, ktora stanowi swiatowa siec jest budowanie
pokojowej , sprawiedliwej i dbajacej o zrownowazony rozwoj przyszlosci. Jest ona przeciwna uzyciu
wszelkiej broni masowej zaglady i domaga sie aby srodki finansowe uzyte na zbrojenia zostaly
przeznaczone na cele pokojowe takie jak pomoc w poprawieniu trudnych warunkow mieszkaniowych w
krajach rozwijajacych sie.
Jedno popoludnie konferencji 6 sierpnia zastanie przeznaczone na zlozenie holdu ofiarom Hioszimy i
Nagasaki, aby upamietnic 59 rocznice tego ataku pod koniec II wojny swiatowej. Uczestnicy konferencji
zloza rowniez kwiaty na Westerplatte, aby uhonorowac bohaterstwo zolnierzy polskich probujacych
odeprzec atak w pierwszych dniach wojny .
Uczestnicy konferencji wrecza przechodniom ulotki popierajace calkowita eliminacje broni nuklearnej i
pokojowe rozwiazywanie konfliktow. Nuklearne arsenaly tzw ”nowych krajow nuklearnych” jak Indie, Pakistan
zagrazaja swiatu. Slychac takze glosy przerazajace opinie publiczna o mozliwym uzyciu broni masowego
razenia (WMPs, "dirty bombs") przez terrorystow. Nalezy glosno zadeklarowac protest przeciwko broni
nuklearnej.
