Tadeusz Jalmuzna (1939-2006) – polish historian of education
Summary
Tadeusz Jalmuzna lived from 1939 till 2006. After finishing primary school in the village Łaznów,
he trained as a teacher at the Grammar School of Education and Teacher Training College in Piotrków.
A turning point in his biography was the year 1960, when he began to study pedagogy at the
University of Łódź where, under the influence of Stefan Truchim and Eugenia Podgórska, he
undertook research on the history of education. In the years 1968–2006 he was employed at the
University of Łódź, where he obtained a PhD degree (1973) and habilitation (1983). In 2000 he
received the title of professor.
In his alma mater he held a number of functions, but he also worked for other institutions and
organizations.
T. Jalmuzna is the author of several books, treatises and articles on the history of education. Their
subject matter is education, science and culture in Poland during the Second World War, the theory
and practice of teaching in the interwar period, biographies of prominent educators and educational
activists and the history of schools and teacher training institutions.
