FEBRUARY 14, 2010 ŚWIĘTA JADWIGA SANTA EDUVIGES 2226 NORTH HOYNE AVE. • CHICAGO, IL 60647 St. Hedwig, pray for us. Św. Jadwigo, módl się za nami. Santa Eduviges, ruega por nosotros. ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Administered by the Resurrection Fathers and Brothers. Celebrating 121 years in the Bucktown Community. NOTES AND EVENTS 2 THE CONGREGATION OF THE RESURRECTION FOUNDED ON FEBRUARY 17, 1836 INCREASE IN CANDLE OFFERING The priests that serve our Parish are members of the Congregation of the Resurrection. Their order was founded on February 17, in the year 1836. On Wednesday they celebrate the 174th year of their founding. Please note that the cost of buying candles from our supplier has increased for 2010. That was the day chosen by Bogdan Janski, their founder, to form a community along with several of his fellow Polish exiles who were living in Paris, France at that time. Therefore, the offering for candles that you purchase has increased to $3.00 per candle. Their plan was to strengthen each other by a spiritual fraternity in order to be a force of Christian renewal for society around them. Janski became the leading lay apostle of this group in Paris. The group became so successful and persevering that it led many to renew their own religious life and even to sacrifice themselves to God. After the death of their founder in 1840, the community continued under the direction of their co-founders, Frs. Peter Semenenko and Jerome Kajsiewicz, and on Easter Sunday, March 27, 1842, in the Catacombs of St. Sebastian in Rome they were inspired to dedicate themselves to the Risen Savior and called them themselves the “Brothers of the Resurrection”. The community soon began to branch out from Rome, traveling to Poland, Canada, South America, Australia and the United States. They came to Chicago and established St. Hedwig Parish in 1888. The Parish is now in the 121st year of its existence. Their religious community today consists of priests, brothers, and permanent deacons, and their members can be found all over the world. The Resurrectionists of St. Hedwig Parish and the Janski House thank everyone who has supported them with love and friendship through their many years of dedication and service. FEBRUARY 20 - 21 GUEST SPEAKER Only candles that you purchase from us can be used in Church. All other candles will be removed. Thank you! FOCUS ON THE WORD 6 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME It's unlikely that anyone has wished you "Happy Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time!" And I doubt that any Hallmark store carries fancy cards celebrating the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. It is Valentine's Day, and many cards and chocolates will be proffered to loved ones on this day named after a martyred Roman priest whose feast has become synonymous with the celebration of love. While St. Valentine's Day is in full swing, this is also the last Sunday before Lent begins. We'll celebrate Ash Wednesday in just a few days and renew our traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Sunday's Gospel can get us ready for that. We're used to hearing Matthew's version of the Eight Beatitudes. Luke does things a little differently. He gives us only four beatitudes, paralleled by "woes." And Luke is very concrete. If you're poor, you'll be rich. If you're rich, you'll be poor. If you're hungry, you'll be filled, and vice versa. Luke's blessings and woes provide a good challenge for us as we enter into Lent. Our fasting and almsgiving are directed at balancing out that equation of emptying ourselves to help the poor and the hungry. In doing that, we can become a blessing to others, and at the same time, bring about less woe in this suffering world. So maybe it is appropriate that we celebrate Valentine's Day (and the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time) with a Gospel about blessings and woes. After all, true love isn't always easy; it demands some sacrifice. We'll be asked to sacrifice during Lent, placing a demand on our love. May we be as faithful as that martyred Roman priest, whose name has come to symbolize love, who imitated his Master, by giving up all. ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 14, 2010 Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Next Sunday: Jas 1:1-11/ Mk 8:11-13 Jas 1:12-18/ Mk 8:14-21 Jl 2:12-18/2 Cor 5:20---6:2/ Mt 6:1-6, 16-18 Dt 30:15-20/ Lk 9:22-25 Is 58:1-9a/ Mt 9:14-15 Is 58:9b-14/ Lk 5:27-32 Dt 26:4-10/ Rom 10:8-13/ Lk 4:1-13 FEBRUARY 14, 2010 5a MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK Sunday, February 14 8:00 AM Robert Killen - Health & Blessings † Frank & Dorothy Slosarzyk † Helen Grember † Albert Snigoski 9:30 AM 11:00 AM Haline Kubsik - Health & Blessings † Stanley Golembiewski Irene Taraszka - Health & Blessings Karen Meyers - Health & Blessings † Frank Fischer † Harry Singer † Leon Rydel † Henry & Angeline Pawlicki 1:00 PM Sally Cardenas - Health & Blessings Barbara Durbin - Health & Blessings Parishioners of St. Hedwig Church Monday, February 15 8:00 AM † Helen Rose Marszalek † Gus Ladas 7:00 PM † Donald Schaller Wednesday, February 17 ASH WEDNESDAY 8:00 AM Liv/Dec. Augustyn Pelanowski OSPPE Środa Popielcowa i Wielki Post Odmieńmy sposób życia, pokutujmy w popiele i włosiennicy, pośćmy i płaczmy przed Panem, gdyż Bóg nasz jest pełen miłosierdzia i gotów odpuścić nam nasze grzechy. (Por. Jl 2,13). Rdz 3,19). Praktyki Wielkopostne to : post, modlitwa i jałmużna. Czynić dobrze z sercem otwartym, pelnym miłosiedzia i przebaczenia. Niech ten Wielki Post będzie dla nas wszystkich wyjatkowym przezyciem spotkania z Bogiem i drugim człowiekiem.
