Reason:
R&D investigations of emulsion polymerization at a laboratory scale to understand dependence
among reaction parameters, and provide customers with new polymer samples.
Parameters: All equipment must be compatible with EX zone.
Reactor:
Size: 5 liters (final working volume 70-80% from 5 liters)
Min/max pressure: 0,04/+2 bar
Min/max temperature: -5/ 1 °C
Material of Construction: Must be compatible with styrene, butadiene, organic solvents, amines,
water solutions of acids and bases (pH range from 3,5 to 12)
Agitator: Capable of mixing viscous polymer dispersion (up to 50 000 cPs) – may need to test –
230/400V, three phase 50 Hz, EEx e ii T4, max speed approximately 0-200 rpm, double helix impeller.
The thermocouple must be immersed in the reaction medium.
The agitator with a frame at the height min. 70% complete, and must be helical.

EX design.
Vessel: Borosilicate glass (or better) stirrer vessel 5 liter, max pressure at least 0,04/+2 bar, with
heating and cooling jacket, heating min. to 1 °C, cooling min. oC, bottom drain valve. Vessel body
is cylindrical.
Cover Plate: Has a center opening for agitator, and 5 openings:

1. One for Vacuum vent line

Bottom Exit Line: Manual ball valve, must have the ability to take samples of viscous latex through a
needle outlet fairly quickly. It has to be easy to clean, even when the undesirable coagulation process
takes place in the reactor.
Stand: Stainless steel construction
Accessories: heating and cooling system sufficient for 5l volume, temperature probes with sufficient
cable, additional parts for stirrer equipment, additional bottom drain valve, additional separating
valves, spare parts and tools sufficient to keep us running.
Condenser Line: Manual open/close valve, condenser with approx. 0.1 m2 (or more) exchange area,
manual open/close valve for venting.
Vacuum pump line
Must be capable of working with 0,04 bar absolute pressure. Consisting of condenser and vacuum
pump. All elements must be resistant to styrene, butadiene, amines, organic solvents and water
solutions of bases or acids (pH range from 3,5 to 12).
Waste vessel – 2,5 L could be made from glass resistant to low pressure (0,04 bar) (optional)
All lines must be easily detachable for ease of cleaning.
System:
Must be computer (automatic) operated:
-stirring
-temperature (Jacket and reactor interior)
- vacuum valve opening
-parameters such as: rpm, torque, temperatures (in jacket and reactor), should be displayed on the
screen.
