How CPR or BLS Certification Let
Bystanders Help Cardiac Arrest
Victims
Introduction
Cardiac arrest refers to the condition when the heartbeat stops suddenly even without any
warning. The condition stops the pumping action of one's heart and prevents it from pumping
blood to the lungs, brain, and other vital organs. Cardiac arrest victims often lose
consciousness within only a few seconds they have attacks and do not exhibit any pulse.
Death or brain damage may take place within only a few minutes if cardiac arrest victims do
not get timely treatment. Luckily, reputed AHA institutes organize CPR First Aid
Certification to let bystanders work as first responders and retain their pulse until the victim
reaches the hospital.
BLS or CPR Certification Allows you to Learn Applying Compression-only CPR
If you see an adult or a teen collapse suddenly, you should act instantly and follow the
mentioned steps to apply compression-only or hands-only CPR.
Step 1-Identify the Breathing Signs
You should identify the breathing signs by simply looking at the chest position of the SCA
victim. For this, you have to hear the victim's breath and check the rising and falling of the
chest.
Step 2-Start applying CPR
You should start CPR immediately on a sudden cardiac arrest victim so that his/her gasping
or breathing resumes.
Step 3-Body Adjustment to Apply Chest Compressions
Bystanders should remember that the right position is crucial to apply CPR accurately. For
this, you should adjust your body by kneeling near to the patient and using any two fingers
for locating their breastbone ends so that the ribs come closer. Once you place your fingers at
the breastbone tip, you should place the heel of another hand above the fingers on the side
close to the face of the victim. After this, you should place the heel of your next hand on the
top of your first hand to allow the intertwining of fingers or stacking of hands.
Step 4-Apply Chest Compressions
Push fast and hard in the chest central part until and unless the victim gets medical attention.
You should make sure to pump the blood into the entire body.
For this, you may use your body weight for adding strength to pushes. Make sure to
administer 100 chest compressions to 120 chest compressions in one minute. Furthermore,
make sure of the right chest compression depth for teenage, adults, and children.
Accordingly, the chest compression depth for adults and teens should be between 2 inches
minimum and 2.4 inches maximum. However, chest compression for children should be only
2 inches. Strictly avoid leaning on the patient between chest compressions.
Step 5-Repetition
You should repeat the mentioned procedures to conduct compression-only or hands-only
CPR.
Conclusion
Approximately 45 percent to 50 percent of cardiac arrest victims survive and lead a normal
life with the timely help of bystanders with CPR or BLS Certification and their role to
administer CPR. Basic life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation are critical skills to
know by every individual. These skills let cardiac arrest victims continue breathing until they
get medical attention from doctors. Therefore, bystanders learn and get certification in CPR
to save the life of their family members and colleagues.
