Application notes Ascon Spa High efficiency cooling plant for cold stores for the conservation of fruits and vegetables Saving energy is a vital demand of modern society. However, the performance of systems used in food processing cannot be compromised in this effort. Manufacturers of refrigerating equipment for food storage have become increasingly sensitive to this need and have developed solutions that combine energy savings with the ability to obtain the highest-quality products. The plant is based on a new concept that includes a harvesting plant, a pre-refrigeration area, a conservation area, and a processing area for fruits and vegetables. The scope is to increase the processing rates of the plant drastically while keeping energy consumption the same as the plant’s existing energy consumption. Also required is the flexibility to process different types of fruits and vegetables in the plant, along with the ability to use the cold storage rooms for both the conservation and pre-refrigeration stages. Plant and Control System Solution The cooling system is an indirect expansion type and includes low-temperature glycol chillers with high coefficient of performance connected to one evaporative cooler with an intermediate heat exchanger. One AC Station Multi-loop Multifunction Programmable controller acting on the inverters of the primary and secondary loop pumps assures the control of the machines. Other AC Stations are dedicated to control of: o the temperature and humidity of each cold room acting on the three-way mixing control valve of the air refrigerator units; o the temperature of the icy water of the hydro-cooler for the pre-refrigeration of the fruits; o the temperature and humidity of the processing room to meet the conditions necessary for areas in which people have to work. In accordance with the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations for food safety, The 72X144mm screens of the AC Station controllers guarantee the local operator interface while supervision, is performed by the AUTOLINK software (SCADA). Temperatures are measured by resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) of the ZTR series with class 1/3 DIN accuracy while, the relative humidity, is measured by the H1 series transmitters. The following Ascon’s products have been used: o Multi loop Multifunction Programmable Loop Controllers model AC20-300000 of the AC Station series with analogical and digital function blocks including four PID loops. o Humidity transmitters of the H1 series featuring long-term stability; reliable measurements; long-life, interchangeable filters for different applications; and the ability to be replaced with no recalibration. o Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) of the ZTR series Customer: ORTIZ Srl, Bari, Italy http://www.ortizsrl.it/ EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL ASCON Spa Via Falzarego, 9/11 20021 Bollate (Milan) Italy Tel.+39-02-333371 Fax+39-02-3504243 E-mail [email protected] www.ascon.it
