meeting the needs of changing world is a perfect setting for finding solutions of the future and taking challenges.
The European Economic Congress is a three-day series of discussions and meetings
with participation of more than six thousand
visitors from Poland and other European countries. In nearly a hundred sessions, several
hundred panellists are involved. Each Congress is a meeting of the most important figures in the world of politics, business, science
and economics. Topics of the sessions, debates and meetings include the most important
issues for economic and social development.
Jednym z najważniejszych tematów będzie współpraca gospodarcza z krajami Afryki, omawiana w czasie sesji Go global!
w ramach Forum Współpracy Gospodarczej Afryka – Europa Centralna.
One of the most important topics will be economic cooperation with African countries, taken at the Go Global! session in the
framework of the Africa - Central Europe Economic Cooperation Forum.
W trakcie trzech Kongresowych dni odbędą się m. in. także: uroczyste otwarcie
Centrum Czystych Technologii Węglowych (CCTW), wręczenie nagród Polskiej
Agencji Rozwoju Przedsiębiorczości, Polsko – Czeskie Spotkania Gospodarcze, uroczystość wręczenia Złotych Certyfikatów Rzetelności oraz rozstrzygnięcie drugiej
edycji konkursu Top Inwestycje Komunalne.
During the three days of congress there are also going to happen among others: the
grand opening of Clean Coal Technologies Center (CCTW), presentation of the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development awards, Polish - Czech Economic Meetings,
Golden Certificates of Reliability ceremony and resolve of the second edition of the
Top Municipal Investments competition.

Tak najkrócej określić można specyfikę turystyki biznesowej. Jak
każdy produkt, potrzebuje ona jakości, atrakcyjnego wizerunku
i przemyślanej promocji. Jednak warto zainwestować – w roku
2012 Katowice odwiedziło 500 tysięcy turystów biznesowych.
That way you can briefly describe specificity of business tourism.
Like any other product, it needs quality, attractive image and
clever promotion. It is worth to invest - in 2012 Katowice was
visited by 500,000 business tourists.
Liczby nie kłamią
Przeprowadzone pod koniec roku 2012 przez dr. Krzysztofa Cieślikowskiego badania1 nie pozostawiają wątpliwości. 82 % turystów biznesowych wydało w Katowicach w ubiegłym roku niemal 57 mln PLN (konferencje bez noclegu), ci, którzy
w mieście zostali na noc – ponad 41 mln PLN. Liczba spotkań – 6117 – to jeden
z najlepszych wyników w kraju.
Numbers do not lie
Research1 conducted at the end of the year 2012 by Dr. Krzysztof Cieślikowski leave
no doubt. Last year 82% of business travelers in Katowice spent almost 57 million
PLN (conferences without accommodation), those who were in the city for a night
– more than 41 million PLN. Number of meetings – 6117 – is one of the best results
in the country.
Warto zabiegać
Uczestnicy badań doceniają bogatą ofertę miasta i deklarują chęć powrotu. Czekają na rozwinięcie oferty rozrywkowej i … więcej miejsc parkingowych. Uczestnicy
spotkań konferencyjnych, to najczęściej ludzie aktywni zawodowo i opiniotwórczy –
przekonuje dr Cieślikowski. – Warto o nich zabiegać – dodaje. Katowice stawiają na
turystykę biznesową. W przyszłym roku ma nastąpić otwarcie Międzynarodowego
Centrum Kongresowego – największego tego typu ośrodka w Polsce.

The participants of the conference meetings are mostly people economically active
and influential – Krzysztof Cieślikowski says. – It is worth to endeavour after them
– he adds. Katowice focuses on business tourism. For next year the International
Convention Center – the largest such centre in Poland is scheduled to be opened.

Uznawane za przemysłowe, miasto może pochwalić się, że ponad 40 % jego
powierzchni stanowią tereny zielone.
W 2014 r. katowicka Hala Widowiskowo – Sportowa „Spodek” będzie gospodarzem decydujących meczów Mistrzostw Świata w siatkówce mężczyzn.
Również w „Spodku” w styczniu 2013 roku po raz pierwszy w Polsce odbył
się najbardziej prestiżowy i największy na świecie turniej dla graczy komputerowych. Relację online z tego wydarzenia śledziło ponad 14 mln osób
z całego świata.
Katowice znalazły się w grupie pięciu polskich miast – finalistów konkursu
na Europejską Stolicę Kultury 2016.
Katowice w 2011 roku były jednym z 70 kandydatów z całego świata o tytuł
jednego z najpiękniejszych miast świata w konkursie fundacji New7Wonders.

Katowice has been awarded with the
title of „Newcomer city of the year
2012” for rising stars of modern business
services sector during the gala organized
by the „Outsourcing in Poland” and Biznes
Polska Media.
Among 12 cities in Poland considered
metropolises, Katowice is the least
indebted one, despite of huge investments carried out.
The city has two historical monuments: Silesian Parliament Building
and the famous Nikiszowiec district.
In April 2013, the „Spodek” arena was hosting the WTA - BNP Paribas Open
Katowice tennis tournament for the first time.
Considered to be industrial, the city can boast over 40% of its territory are
green areas.
In 2014 Katowice sport and show arena - the „Spodek” will be a host of the
decisive matches in the World Cup men’s volleyball.
Also in the „Spodek”, in January 2013, for the first time in Poland there was
held the largest and most prestigious computer gaming tournament in the
world. Online relation from that event was watched by more than 14 million
people around the world.
Katowice was among five Polish cities – finalists of the European Capital of
Culture 2016.
In 2011, Katowice was found among 70 candidates from all over the world for
the title of one of the most beautiful cities in the world in the competition
New7Wonders Foundation.
Trwa II etap przebudowy ścisłego centrum miasta w Katowicach, przedsięwzięcia o ogromnym znaczeniu, zarówno w wymiarze społecznym, jak i biznesowym. Jest to największa tego
typu inwestycja w Europie Środkowej, porównywana do budowy
nowego centrum Berlina na Potsdamer Platz.

koryta Rawy oraz stworzenie nowej około 500 – metrowej ulicy, łączącej ulicę Chorzowską i Piotra Skargi
wzdłuż katowickiej Superjednostki. W ramach prac zrealizowany zostanie projekt
nowej miejskiej zieleni na przebudowywanym obszarze.
Kolejne etapy przebudowy nadadzą zupełnie nowy wygląd i funkcjonalność centrum Katowic. Na efekty inwestycji niecierpliwie czekają mieszkańcy, aktywnie zaangażowani w projekt dzięki przeprowadzonym na ogromną skalę konsultacjom
społecznym.
Reconstruction of the city centre in Katowice,a project of great
social and business importance, is currently going through its
second phase. It is the largest investment of that kind in Central
Europe, compared to the construction of a new centre of Berlin
at Potsdamer Platz.
Undertaking that huge investment, the city authorities decided to transform Katowice market into a modern urban space, meeting place important from social,
cultural and business point of view.
Assumptions of the ongoing second phase of the reconstruction include rebuilding
of the Rawa riverbed and create a new 500 meters-long road connecting the Chorzowska and Piotra
Skargi streets, along
Katowice’s Superjednostka. As a part
of the project, a new
urban greenery would be created on the
reconstructed area.
Next steps of the reconstruction would
give the city centre a
whole new look and

consultation, carried out on a large-scale.

Otwarty w październiku 2012 roku katowicki dworzec jest prawdziwą dumą miasta. Nic dziwnego – hala jest nie tylko nowoczesna pod względem użytkowym, ale i designersko zaprojektowana. Inwestycję każdej doby oglądają i podziwiają pasażerowie
520 pociągów, przejeżdżających przez stację Katowice.
Opened in October 2012, Katowice railway station is a real pride
of the city. No wonder — the hall is not only modern in terms of
utility, but also well-designed. The investment is watched and
admired by passengers of 520 trains passing through the Katowice station every day.

New hall has almost 6,000 m2 of the area, there are 31 retail outlets, nine ticket
offices and two passenger service
points. The object is managed by
an intelligent system. There has
been 49 cameras installed to monitor the area of the station. It is
expected that within a year the
train hall would have been visited
by 12 million travelers, who could
appreciate its modern architecture
and a wide range of commercial
service.
Transport przyszłości
W lutym 2013 roku otwarto podziemny Dworzec Autobusowy, zintegrowany
z Dworcem PKP, co jest wielkim udogodnieniem dla pasażerów. Nowa jakość podróży to łatwiejsze przesiadki, płynność i komfort w docieraniu do celu środkami komunikacji miejskiej. Dzięki temu w Katowicach funkcjonować będzie jedno
z największych w kraju centrów, integrujących komunikację kolejową, publiczną
i indywidualną. W drugiej połowie tego roku do użytku zostanie oddana Galeria
Katowicka oraz parking na 1200 samochodów.
Transport of the future
In February 2013, an underground
Bus Station was opened. It is integrated with the Railway Station, which is a great
convenience for passengers. New quality of travel is easier transfers, smoothness
and convenience in reaching out with the public transport. Thanks to this function,
in Katowice there would be one of the country’s largest centres integrating railway,
public and personal communication. In second half of the current year, Galeria Katowicka and parking for 1200 cars is going to be launched.

An interview with Dirk Dewitte, Chinese Services Group Leader in
Europe, Middle East and Africa, Deloitte
Will China be the world’s leading power that drives global economy towards sustainable growth?
All signs confirm this view. We have experienced downturn in all parts of the world,
in South America, Far East Asia, USA and Europe. In China, the slowdown has only
been reduced to a GDP decrease from 9 to 7.5%. If that trend is reversed, China will
apparently become the first economy in the world. Surprisingly, being a controlled-market economy, it may be able to avoid threats that have resulted in downturn
in other economies. I am quite optimistic about China’s potential as a global economic power.
Are there any internal threats that, if mishandled, might stop China’s rapid development?
Chinese government is already taking actions to increase quality of life and improve infrastructure in Chinese cities to make them a good place to live for the growing
middle class, including young graduates of Western universities, returning to China
to assume managerial positions in business. Society aging is also a problem; demographic trends indicate the growing number of old people. China doesn’t have
a very good health care or pension system, and is working to improve it. Immaturity of financial sector institutions, which not always are capable of supporting
business development well enough with sophisticated financing instruments, is
another issue. Local authorities use their own tools to support sustainable growth
of underdeveloped regions, where gap between big cities and poor rural regions might lead to social tensions. China is also becoming more democratic, albeit slowly.
The entire process, although not fast, may result in sustainable development of
Chinese economy.

Has the GDP decrease in China negatively influenced the flow of Chinese capital
to Europe?
Chinese investors take their time to make investment decisions. Since they typically see investments in long-term perspective, they do not hurry. The short-term
decrease in Chinese GDP from 9% to 7.5% does not mean that Chinese companies
have less funds to invest. They will continue looking for targets in Europe. The GDP
decrease may make them more
cautious and prolong the decision-making process, especially
in state-owned companies. I do
not expect this slowdown to
substantially affect M&A trends
we have observed for last couple of years.

Is the current situation in Cyprus undermining their trust in safe investments in
the EU?
What we have recently experienced with Cyprus should remind us that Europe
has not recovered from the crisis yet and the recovery process is very slow. In my
opinion, the European crisis has encouraged Chinese investment, as it has provided opportunity for reasonably cheap acquisition of real estate, unprofitable
companies or disposed state-owned assets. Cyprus has ceased to be a safe haven
for capital, but we have free flow of capital in the world. And the nature abhors a
vacuum. Investors worldwide know how to secure their free capitals. Hence the
strategy of global Chinese investments that allows allocating funds among many
emerging regions. The Cyprus case has also demonstrated that we should avoid
excessive liquidity.
What barriers are mentioned by the Chinese investors in doing business in Europe?
The Chinese are still learning how to operate on the European market, but they
can be flexible. Construction companies complain about difficulties with the public
procurement system in European countries, which disallows sufficient use of their
competitive advantage. Employment regulations also make a difference, especially compared to Chinese investments already carried out in the Middle East and
Africa. New entrants are surprised with low flexibility of legal regulations, which in
China can be negotiated to some extent. Still, those who have been operating in
Europe for a few years tend to adapt.

business partners and there is no need to convince anyone that
this is one of the most popular tools in business. What is the primary factor influencing the shape of a business meeting? There
is no doubt - the location.

Największy kulturalny plac budowy w Europie – inwestycja znana w Katowicach jako „Strefa Kultury” wchodzi w nową fazę
realizacji. Jeszcze w 2013 roku ukończone zostaną dwie z trzech
inwestycji o łącznej kwocie 1 miliarda złotych – siedziba Narodowej Orkiestry Symfonicznej Polskiego Radia oraz Muzeum
Śląskie.
The largest cultural building site in Europe - an investment in
Katowice known as the „Culture Zone” comes to a new phase of
implementation. Two of three projects with a total amount of
1 billion zlotys would be completed in 2013 – the seat of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Silesian Museum.
Siedziba Narodowej Orkiestry Symfonicznej Polskiego Radia
Już wkrótce, podczas otwarcia obiektu, usłyszeć będzie można 9 Symfonię
Beethovena w długo wyczekiwanej sali koncertowej NOSPR. Perfekcyjną akustykę
obiektu zapewniła japońska firma Nagata Acoustics przy użyciu najnowocześniejszych rozwiązań.
Seat of Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra
Soon, at the opening of the object, it would be possible to hear Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in the long-awaited Polish National Radio Symphony concert hall. Perfect acoustics of the object is provided by the Nagata Acoustics Japanese company,
using the newest solutions.
Nowa siedziba Narodowej Orkiestry Symfonicznej Polskiego Radia powstaje na
czterohektarowym terenie po dawnym placu drzewnym kopalni Katowice, położonym w sercu miasta i metropolii Silesia. Prestiżowy dla miasta i regionu gmach
będzie silnie związany z kontekstem miejskim, współtworząc żywą i wielowątkową przestrzeń publiczną. Wraz z sąsiednim placem, parkiem, ogrodami tematycznymi, amfiteatrem, założeniami wodnymi, ścieżkami pieszymi i rowerowymi oraz
placami zabaw, będzie synergicznie kształtować codzienną, miejską aktywność
śródmieścia Katowic.
The new seat of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra is being built on the
site of the former four-hectare large wood square of the “Katowice” coal mine, located in a very heart of the city and the metropolis of Silesia. The building, prestigious
for the city and the region, would be strongly connected with the urban context,
contributing to a lively and varied public space. Along with the neighboring square,
park, thematic gardens, amphitheater, water assumptions, walking and bike paths
and playgrounds, it would synergistically shape everyday urban activity of Katowice
downtown.
Wnętrze zostało podporządkowane uzyskaniu najwyższej jakości warunków
akustycznych dla wykonywania, odbioru i rejestracji muzyki symfonicznej – sala
koncertowa wraz z zapleczem technicznym będzie największym studio nagraniowym w kraju, umożliwiającym nagrania wielokanałowe oraz nagrania do produkcji
kinowych.
The interior has been conformed to obtain the highest quality acoustic conditions
for the performance, reception and recording symphonic music - a concert hall with
a technical background would be the largest recording studio in the country, enabling multi-channel recording and recording for movie production.

że większość powierzchni wystawienniczej znajduje się pod ziemią, a zabytkowe obiekty pokopalniane harmonijnie
wpisują się w projekt, odpowiednio zaadoptowane dla potrzeb muzealnych.
Silesian Museum
An unusual project – an investment
of the Marshal Office of Silesia Voivodeship – being realised in the
place of former „Katowice” coal-mine, makes Silesian Museum one
of the most modern object of that
kind in Europe. This innovative idea
assumes that most of the exhibition space is located underground
and post-mining historic buildings
harmoniously fit into the project,
appropriately adapted to the needs
of the museum.
Kolekcje Muzeum Śląskiego zyskają oryginalną i nowatorską oprawę – na poprzemysłowych terenach powstanie nowy główny gmach, a zabytkowe obiekty
pokopalniane pochodzące z przełomu XIX i XX wieku zostaną zaadaptowane na
powierzchnie wystawiennicze, restaurację oraz wieżę widokową, z której będzie
można zobaczyć panoramę ciągle rozwijającej się Silesii.
Silesian Museum collections will benefit from an original and innovative setting – the
creation of a new post-industrial areas of the main building, and post-mining historic buildings dating from the turn of the century will be adapted to the exhibition
space, a restaurant and an observation tower from which you can see panorama of
constantly growing Silesia.

Obydwa obiekty stworzą, razem z Międzynarodowym Centrum Kongresowym oraz
legendarną, zmodernizowaną halą widowiskowo – sportową „Spodek” niezwykły
kompleks – katowicką „Strefę Kultury”.
Both facilities would create, together with the International Congress Centre and the
legendary, upgraded entertainment sports and show arena – ”Spodek” an extraordinary complex – Katowice „Culture Zone”.

the future, European Economic Congress
would be able to take place entirely in one
location – tells us Janusz Nowak, the project coordinator. ICC would provide not
only a comfortable environment for organization of the prestigious economic
congress. – Connecting the Spodek arena with ICC would give possibility to arrange
events for 21,000 participants – Nowak declares. That would certainly be one of the
most spectacular investment of a revitalization character.

Silesian laces, embroidered tapestries, decorative belts with
floral motifs, the walls are adorned with mirrors and glass
sconces and ceilings – with crystal chandeliers, like in the
20th century. In the menu appear dishes of Polish cuisine,
including Silesian specialties. Silesian sour soup, a traditional
Silesian meat-roll with smoked bacon and pickled cucumber, goose leg with cranberry-horseradish sauce – are just
a few items on the long list of dishes.

Jazz
Katowice zapisały ważną kartę w historii polskiego jazzu. Wydział Jazzu i Muzyki Rozrywkowej Akademii Muzycznej, utworzony w 1970 roku, przez bardzo długi
okres czasu był jedynym tego typu wydziałem w Polsce. Wielu znakomitych polskich jazzmanów studiowało w Katowicach.
Nic dziwnego, że jazz w Katowicach brzmi szczególnie często. Od 8 lat z inicjatywy katowickiej Akademii Muzycznej odbywa się Śląski Festiwal Jazzowy, któremu
towarzyszy Międzynarodowy Konkurs Improwizacji. Od dwóch lat w katowickim
kalendarzu festiwalowym gości Katowice JazzArt Festival, organizowany przez Instytucję Kultury Katowice – Miasto Ogrodów, całości zaś dopełnia rozciągnięty na
przestrzeni całego roku cykl „Jazz i Okolice”.
No wonder that jazz in Katowice is heard with particular frequency. Initiated by the
Academy of Music in Katowice, the Silesia Jazz Festival, has been held for the past
eight years, accompanied by the International Improvisation Competition. For two
years Katowice has hosted the JazzArt Festival, organised by the Katowice City of
Gardens Cultural Institute, as part of its festival calendar, complemented by a year-round series of ‘Jazz and Neighbourhoods’.

Nowe sala koncertowa
W 2014 powstanie nowa siedziba Narodowej Orkiestry Symfonicznej Polskiego
Radia w Katowicach. Sercem obiektu będzie główna sala koncertowa na 1800
miejsc o drobiazgowo opracowanej akustyce przez japońskich specjalistów z Nagata Acustics. Ponadto, w nowej siedzibie znajdować się będzie sala kameralna
dla 300 osób i studio nagraniowe (wraz z salą stanowić będzie największe studio
nagraniowe w kraju). Obiekt zaprojektowany przez architekta Tomasza Koniora,
autora Sali koncertowej Akademii Muzycznej w Katowicach, ma szanse stać się
wizytówką miasta. Projekt Sali otrzymał już m.in. nagrodę w konkursie European
Commercial Property Awards 2010. Symboliczne jest miejsce powstania sali koncertowej na terenie po dawnej kopalni węgla kamiennego.
New concert hall
The new seat of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice will
be opened in 2014. The heart of the facility will be the 1800-seat main concert hall
meticulously designed by the Japanese acoustics experts of Nagata Acoustics. In
addition, the new facility will house an intimate auditorium for 300 people and a
recording studio (which, with the hall, will constitute the largest recording studio
in the country). The building, designed by architect Thomas Konior, creator of the
Concert Hall at the Academy of Music in Katowice, has the potential to become a
landmark of the city. The Hall project has already received, among others, a prize in
the European Commercial Property Awards competition of 2010. Symbolically, the
concert hall is being built on the site of a former coal mine.
Blues
Rawa Blues Festival also enjoys an exceptional status, making Katowice one of the
Polish capitals of the blues. Since 1981 this event has presented the most important
artists in this genre and ranks as the greatest indoor blues festival in the world.
Jazz
Katowice has contributed a significant chapter to the history of Polish jazz. The Department of Jazz and Popular Music of the Academy of Music, founded in 1970, was
for a very long time the only such department in Poland. Many outstanding Polish
jazzmen studied in Katowice.
