Premiership Reunion Day - Saturday

Premiership Reunion Day - Saturday
Greetings and welcome to a preview of round 18 at the Worlds Greatest Football
Club, where we have 6 teams locked in for finals activity and the C-bombs needing
a couple of results to go their way to join them.
We have officially hit 500 members/player sponsors, with numerous donors over
and above that figure. Rulebook couldn’t believe his luck when we rocked up at
the 1961 A grade premiership reunion at the Havelock last Friday night and there
were 25 ex Blacks who miraculously hadn’t yet been contacted by the Book.
Sometimes not having email, a mobile phone or a facebook account is a blessing.
Anyway, it was a great night and terrific to see so many legends of the club,
including 4 time premiership coach Alan Greer, come along to celebrate the
premiership and also the life of Doc Clarkson. Congrats to the Mogul (or the Ox)
and Dudley Hill for organising and hosting the event.

The Scum – The Dima Years
Bouncy castle for kiddies up to age 12 is booked from 1:30 – 4:30, Havey staff will
be on hand to dispense Bob Neil’s finest from 1:00 – 5:00 and there will be some
footy on in the middle as well. As noted in the ad in the Sunday Mail, all are
welcome so get along for what should be a super day of Blacks entertainment.
Photo Day - Sunday
For players, photo Day is this Sunday but, as previously advised, we will be doing it
without Super Sunday festivities which will instead be held on September 11. This
is shaping up as a wise decision as a few lads are still struggling from the Blacks
Ball festivus last weekend. The Chardonnays and Scum will get their photos taken
on Saturday before their respective games, but for all other teams please report
to University Oval at 10:45 on Sunday for the snaps. Bring your footy gear thanks.
Alan Statton
The AUFC is very sad to hear of the recent passing of Big Al Statton, an amateur
league legend, great Blacks supporter and most importantly Grandfather of Big
Al’s Grandson (BAGy), Tom Bernard. In the last decade Big Al took a great interest
in the club via Tom’s football with the Blacks and Tom was often played entirely
on the grandstand wing at Bob Neil 1 just so it was a little easier for Big Al to
watch. Prior to that time, during his many years of service to the amateur league,
Big Al was a great supporter of the Blacks and we send our condolences to Bagy &
the entire Statton family.
Raffle Prizes
The Credit Union Raffle results were in the Sunday Mail and its pleasing to see
that we won 3 prizes – appropriately 69th and 130th!! 69th is, of course, famous
because this is the number of games that Bruce Bishop played.
69th - Adelaide University Football Club - $350 Ladies D&G Watch
130th - Adelaide University Football Club - $200 22ltr breville convection oven
162nd - Adelaide University Football Club - $300 Breville sandwhich press
Round 17 Results – What a Weekend!
Well that was near perfect…Scum lost (which they’re supposed to anyway),
Chardonnays lost (but have locked away top spot anyway), every other team won
and with other results going our way the A grade are now in the top 3 for the first
time this year. And if that wasn’t enough, the Blacks Ball was held on Saturday
evening with a record number in attendance and a super time had by all.
The A grade were always in control against Payneham-in-the-arse with Goal-line
Mulvihill kicking 9, the B grade battled away to a 140 point win, the C-bombs kept
their finals hopes alive with a belting of Dis-United, the FGA won comfortably and
the Bastards kept Payneham-in-the-arse to 1 point for the day. The Chards got a
reality check against the Sinners at Sin Stadium (we never win there anyway) and
to round it off the Scum lost the top team but no-one cared. They’ve got more
important things like Placid Poles 300th this week to worry about.

Placid Pole – 300 Games
Marius Danielak, known as the Placid Pole, this week becomes only the 6th person
in AUFC history to play 300 games (see table below). The Pole started with the
club back in 1990, in which he won a premiership and best in finals trophy for the
A11 team, and he also won premiership glory with Bookem Denno and the C
Grade Actors in 1996. The Pole has been an outstanding servant of the club over
the years and has provided many memorable moments, including damn near
getting an entire C grade team killed when he kicked a North-pines-for-a-win
bogan in the arse with 2 minutes to play back in 97. Congrats Pole!

Graham Burton – 250 Games
Who Am I? Born in a small agricultural town on the far west coast of SA in the mid
seventies, I moved to Adelaide to attend University in 1997 after dominating the
local football league as a ruckman. Notable AFL players to have played in my
home league include Corey Enright, Shane and Darryl Wakelin, Kyle Jenner, Brett
Chalmers, Levi Greenwood, Steve Wildman, Paul 'Pup' Jenner.
I started my University football career in the back pocket, migrating to half back
and eventually to a half forward flank where I am most at home. I celebrated a
milestone game in 2008 but would probably be considered to be in the twilight of
my career, although I can still embarrass a much younger (more naïve) opponent
on my day. I play very tall for my size and have a distinctive running style. One of
my favourite AFL players is Steve Johnson reason, he plays most like me. Congrats
Shaggy, outstanding effort and what a character!!
Emails
Arfa Daly keeping us in the loop with life at the Wandsworth Demons…
Good and bad news. AFL London season concluded with Wandsworth Demons (the
good guys and a lot like The Blacks) winning only 1/3 of the grand finals last
Saturday. I played on the wing in the thirds (for my pace and guile) and was
officially recognised as the oldest man at the club by our coach, who when calling
out the team to come and get our premiership medallions referred to me as
"Ancient Arfa". I'm only 41...Final score Wandsworth 3.11 to West 3.4. Didn't kick
straight but lead all day and got there in the end.
Unfortunately that was the end of the results for the good guys. Our seconds and
firsts both got hammered by both the umpire and West. One of our first team guys
(Irish gaelic footballer) got sent off for stopping a bloke from punching him in the
head while the captain (Cocko- guess why?) got sent off for delivering a perfectly
fair shirt front. Anyway, it was a great night at the pub and I even got the
President to institute some Hold Your Bowlies traditions (equivalent of Chocka
Points and singing the club song at the end of the results- I'll keep working on the
winner of 2 jugs of beer "courtesy of the proprietor").
One of my favourite Dees traditions is the Thursday night raffle called the "Wheel
of Cock"- everybody chants the name of the game (think about it!!) The winner
wins some club merchandise then gets the opportunity to "Pick the Wah"- a
chance to pick a card from a board of club legends pinned face down. If he picks
the Wah he wins half the money raised from the raffle, if not, it jackpots to the
next week with the club keeping the other half. It got up to £350 before it was won
(which was promptly donated to one of the English blokes playing for England at
the World champs in Melbourne next month).
So that's it for season 2011. Another good year for the club that could have been a
bit better. An indication of the strength and depth of this fantastic club is that it
has made 9 grand finals in the last 3 years- winning a total of 6 flags!
Any Blacks boys looking for a game in London while on their travels don't need to
look any further than the Wandsworth Demons. A great bunch of lads from all
round Australia and the UK. Good luck for the finals for all the Blacks teams.
Cheers, Arfa
And another great Rulebook story from Dima. Clift is still not a member!
You’ll appreciate this: Phone message from Rulebook: “Dima, its Rulebook, can
you tell Jarrad Clift I’m not an alien or an Egyptian trying to steal his credit card
details... etc”.
30 minutes later I walk past Clift’s desk: “Oh, Dima, who’s this “Road Map” guy
who keeps ringing me asking for my credit card details for some “grey”
something? I told him, I don’t know who you are and I’m not giving out my credit
card details over the phone – so he told me to ask Dima what its about”
Me: “Jarrad, it’s Rulebook, he wants you to join the Greys”. “Oh, OK....” etc
Match Report of the Week – A Grade v Payneham
We kicked the first goal very easily. Free to Lewy, mark to Bater, a couple of errant
handballs and a quick long kick by Jono – Mulv picked up and ran into an open
goal. We then went to sleep and thankfully our opponents (who were tackling
well) couldn’t finish their play off and kicked very poorly. We soaked up some
pressure and then put our foot down. The difference being; we stopped fumbling,
stopped coughing the ball up, started sticking our tackles and ran hard carrying
the ball.
Mulv had a great start with 4.1 and an assist to Will Mc who slotted his first ‘A’
grade goal nonchalantly on the run. Heater was looking for some sympathy votes
at the ball (again) and managed to get crunched after a great opening, meaning
Cool hand Luke’s hamstrings would be granted some extra work through the
Payneham Oval dead track. Just on quarter time, the umpire, mistaking TK for a
heathen awarded a free kick for “blasphemy.” He obviously wasn’t aware of TK’s
Catholic upbringing? Just as everyone else at the ground wasn’t aware of this rule
in football?
The match could have been blown wide open in the second quarter as we
dominated play only to kick six straight (poor choice of word) points, a couple out
on the full and a couple marked on the goal line by the opp. We maintained our
tackling pressure throughout this quarter however.
The third quarter saw an inspired forward-line. Clean hands around the stoppage
gave us quick forward entries from the midfield and this gave our forwards great
opportunities. Goal Line chased and tackled with ferocity and a brilliant crumbing
(left foot) goal by The Gladiator was my personal highlight. We were also able to
create two goals from stoppages deep inside the forward 50 – one to JC and the
other to The Mincer (on debut).
The final quarter started in promising fashion with some good clearance work
from Cool Hand and TK and some good tackling from Dr Quin and Baby George
who also managed to be on the end of some run for an early goal. Then from the
6 minute mark to the 11 minute mark we stopped dead. We allowed them space
to run from our HF line, through the midfield and through our HB line to kick 4
unanswered goals. This proves how important forward and midfield pressure is in
stopping a run on. We cannot afford to lapse in concentration like this. It is why
we have rotations through the midfield to ensure we have fresh players on the
ball – so these lapses don’t happen.
I was pleased we finished off well after this to kick three more goals, just enough
to give us the percentage to be in 3rd spot on Sat night.
It was a fairly scrappy match due to the heavy ground, but when we were able to
use runners coming from behind the ball with clean hands and kick with purpose
we found many scoring opportunities were available. Goal line had a day out with
an aptly put Blacks Ball “Bag” (by TK) of 9 and Hammer Time enjoyed being back
out on the park. A host of other players had a big influence on the result. I was
pleased our tackling pressure was maintained for a large portion of the match –
our last quarter proves we can still improve this.
Blacks Ball 2011
The standard shenanigans took place last Saturday night – record numbers in
attendance, Sam Parker snoozing behind the bar, slip ups & fall downs, a likely
future ban from the venue and much fun had by all. Congrats to Snake & the
social committee for putting on a terrific show and special mention to Matty Allan
and Roadmap for helping with the clean up on Sunday
Blast from the Past

Bob Neil Photo of the Week
Once again we’re up with the current events, Doc Weldon two weeks ago and the
Premier this week. Fair to say someone is going to have to do something very
special to pry the Bob Neil promo keg from the Bastards this year.
This Weeks Games
Ok, so onto round 18, games as follows:
Div 2 v Port District – University Oval @ 2:15
Div 2R v Port District – University Oval @ 12:15
Div 6 v Henley – Henley Oval @ 2:15
Div 6R v Henley – Henley Oval @ 12:15
Div C1 v Smithfield – Park 10 @ 2:15
Div C2 v Port District – Largs Reserve @ 2:15
Div C4 v Elizabeth – Park 10 @ 12:15
The Contract Killers take on Port Red Light District at Bob Neil 1 in yet another
important game to determine whether or not we get the double chance. Win by
more than what Spoc beat Iggies by (assuming that is the case) then we finish
third and get the double chance. Simple really. Haven’t got the changes yet due to
the timing of the publication this week.
The Mothers also take on Port Red Light District and they can absolutely wrap up
top spot with a victory.
The C-Bombs are in an interesting situation and there’s a few scenarios that can
play out. The Bombs play the bottom team Henley on Drugs at Opium Oval, a
game that they should win comfortably. At the same time the Unholy Trinity take
on top team Whats-a-kenil-worth? in a game that they will hopefully lose by an
enormous amount. If the good guys (us) happen to have a 20 goal better day all
up than the bad guys (Unholy) then the good guys make the finals. Or, if Central
Dis-united somehow lose to Giggle Farm then the good guys will make the finals
too. Bob hear our prayer.
The Chardonnays take on bottom team Smithfield at Bob Neil 2, the Scum have
the big milestone game against Queen Elizabeth at Bob Neil 2 and the Bastards
travel out to the Largs Looney Bin to take on 2nd bottom team Red Light Districts.
Hold your Bowlies this week will be hosted by Young Maddern in celebration of
the 1991 premiership teams.
Good luck to all players taking the field for the AUFC this weekend. May Bob be
with you all and thanks to all contributors to this weeks edition, especially
Trimmers for the match report, Pres for some snaps, Howie for the brilliant stats
work, Mayesy for the Pole stuff and Bob for just being Bob.
