Tytuł projektu
Inter-relation between culture, religion and society: interfaith dialogue as
a tool to build an inclusive society
Projekt pobytu
In light of the recent events in Ukraine – the Revolution of Dignity, the
Maidan protests, the annexation of Crimea and the armed conflicts in the
east of the country – it became clear that Ukraine’s history, already
complex and much distorted during the communism, has taken a new
turn. As politicians fail one after the other to become truly leaders in the
society, people’s trust in them fades. New movements from within civil
society take more and more action in the so-much -needed reform
system. According to the polls, the institution that has the highest
degree of trust in Ukraine is the Church. Being part of the civil society
(although maybe not directly recognizing this fact), the Church and
religious organizations find themselves in front of an enormous task and
myriad challenges: to take the position of leadership and to start making
a difference in the society. Many religious leaders realize that for them it
is an excellent opportunity to change the society. The openness of the
4 / 6
Catholic Church towards dialogue and its rich social teaching are two
main pillars that can pave the road towards reforms and improvement in
Ukraine.
The main goals of this project are:
• Analyze the potential influence of religion and values inherent to
religious traditions in developing a narrative for building an inclusive
society
• Prepare grounds for several concrete projects related to reforms and
improvement (in the area of economics, business, education and
journalism)
• Raise awareness in society about the social doctrine of the Church and
to replicate the best practices (on the example of Poland and worldwide)
in building an inclusive society in Ukraine.
My previous work experience has been much grounded in the field of
interfaith dialogue. Having graduated from one of the best Vatican
universities with the degree in dialogue, I founded an NGO, Libertas
Center for Interconfessional and Interreligious dialogue in Ukraine. Since
its foundation in 2013, we have organized and hosted over 40 interfaith
projects/events promoting interfaith dialogue among faith communities
but also promoting dialogue within various parts of civil society,
promoting active citizenship and social responsibility among companies
and businesses. Since 2012, I am adviser to the Mayor of Lviv in religious
and interfaith issues so my work is directly connected to social issues
and interfaith dialogue. As I am also coordinating an international group
of people – alumni of interfaith study program from 35 countries – my
experience has been that of leadership and mentorship in various social
projects and initiatives.
I believe that my proposed project should be implemented for the
following reasons:
1. Great need for reforms in Ukraine
2. Great potentiality of interfaith dialogue and resources that faith
communities possess
3. Need for dialogue on all levels in order to establish trust in society and
in order to build an inclusive society
4. My expertise and the team that I have been working with will be
excellent resources for future work and cooperation
Ideally, the study program that I would like to undertake would be an
interdisciplinary program that offers many choices of courses/tutors and
possibilities. I would like to undertake a program at the John Paul II
Catholic University of Lublin, specifically at its College of Interdisciplinary
Individual Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences
(http://www.kul.pl/about-iish,art_12728.html). The program offers a
variety of courses in various disciplines and it is very much adjustable to
my needs. Another choice would be a program of Inter-faculty Individual
Studies in the Humanities of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków
(http://www.mish.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/courses-in-english/info).
In many ways, Poland’s history and the mentality of the Polish people are
similar to my country’s history and its experiences. I think the lessons
that Poland learnt, implementing the much-needed reforms,
transforming itself from a post-communist country to a democratic state
will be much appreciated in my country. In all of this, the role of religion
and of the Church in particular, must be taken into consideration and I
think that the best practices should be replicated in Ukraine.
Under the umbrella of interfaith dialogue and cooperation, I will focus on
the work in the areas where change is so desperately needed:
corruption, media (propaganda, fake news), economy (green economy,
care for the environment, pollution issues), education, journalism, health
system (bioethics), social entrepreneurship and politics.
Among the short-term plans that I would include after the completion of
my study program in Poland are the following:
• Creation of a strategic plan for the next 5 years for my organizations
and the partners that I will work with
• Creating a team to work with it
• Launching several concrete projects under the umbrella of interfaith
dialogue
The long-term plans include:
• Continuous reformation of society (launching projects and initiatives for
leaders and potential leaders)
5 / 6
• Promoting of dialogue and understanding
• Building an inclusive society with a focus on responsible and active
citizenship
• Using creative approach (based on soft power of culture/religion) to
bring about change in our society
