Wednesday, 19th November 17:45–19:00 Opera Nova Main Screening Room ALEXA 65 WORKSHOP From Glass to Post Wednesday 19th November 12:00 – 13:00 Workshop Centre University of Economy Building M ARRI / OSRAM WORKSHOP SUPPORTED BY CODEX Blocking, Lighting and Shooting a Scene with Phedon Papamichael, ASC Simple techniques for on-set lighting and camerawork Born in Athens and brought up in Munich, cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, ASC, moved to America in the 1980s as a photojournalist and began his career in movies by shooting seven features for Roger Corman in just two years. Subsequent credits include Wim Wenders’ The Million Dollar Hotel, Gore Verbinski’s The Weatherman, and the James Mangold films 3:10 to Yuma and Walk the Line, which won Papamichael the President’s Award at Camerimage. Camerimage 2014 34 Camerimage 2014 The 2004 film Sideways marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with director Alexander Payne, further cemented with The Descendants and Nebraska, which was shot in black-and-white with ALEXA and earned Papamichael an Oscar nomination and the BSC Best Cinematography Award, as well as nominations for an ASC Award, a BAFTA and the Golden Frog at Camerimage. For George Clooney he has shot The Ides of March and The Monuments Men. Papamichael comments, “In the workshop we’ll cover different approaches to lighting and camerawork, utilizing simple tools and classic techniques. Shooting with the ALEXA means we’ll be able to make lighting decisions as we go along, working from the monitor image and taking advantage of the camera’s dynamic range and sensitivity by eliminating fill light until we arrive at the right look for the scene.” Thursday, 20th November 11:30–14:30 Workshop Centre University of Economy Building M ARRI WORKSHOP From the Page to the Screen with Stijn Van der Veken, ASC, SBC The choices and challenges of turning script ideas into images Born and raised in Belgium, Stijn Van der Veken, ASC, SBC, graduated from the film school of IAD and began his career as a camera assistant. He soon moved into the role of cinematographer, shooting documentaries for Belgian television such as Shadow of the Cross and Salmon for Corleone. In addition, he shot several drama series, including Katarakt, Emperor of Taste, Wolven, Vermist and Quiz Me Quick. Feature film credits include Zot Van A, Wolf, Maria Dolores, SM Rechter and Alles voor Lena. The short film Death of a Shadow garnered Stijn acclaim for his cinematography – it was shortlisted for an Oscar nomination for Best Short and earned a nomination in the same category at the European Film Awards. Another short, Murk Light, won him the Black Pearl prize for Best Cinematography at the Abu Dhabi International Film Festival. Stijn has recently been working on the television series In Flanders Fields with director Jan Matthys, with whom he is a frequent collaborator. “One of the most interesting aspects of cinematography is the different approaches you can take to transforming words on paper into images on the screen,” said Stijn. Participants explored the challenge of carrying ideas and characters from one medium to another, while also looking at how equipment choices – such as anamorphic vs. spherical lenses – are really about selecting the right story-telling tools for each project. From arts, science, history and fly-on-the-wall programs to docudramas, he Camerimage 2014 35 Camerimage 2014 is proud to be a part of Britain’s long tradition of quality documentary-making and has worked with award-winning filmmakers such as Vanessa Engle, Leo Regan, Sam Hobkinson and Ben Anthony. Neil Harvey is a BAFTA-nominated cinematographer who has shot prestigious documentaries as well as acclaimed one-off dramas. He has worked with stars such as Lisa Kudrow, George Michael and Meg Ryan, but has also been on productions that involved accompanying British and US forces when they invaded Iraq, and infiltrating armed gangs in El Salvador. Both Perry and Harvey own ARRI AMIRA cameras, and have used them on a wide range of documentaries in recent months. During this workshop they shared their experiences and provide general guidance on shooting with available light in unscripted situations. Perry notes, “If you study painting you’ll see that daylight coming through a single window can be used to make a scene look beautiful. Learning to control available light and make it work for you is a crucial skill in documentaries, so we’ll be looking at that. We’ll also discuss handheld camerawork, analysing what you can do in terms of camera position and configuration to make sure you don’t miss those unrepeatable moments.” Friday, 21st November 11:30–14:30 Workshop Centre University of Economy Building M PANAVISION SEMINARS Moderated by Benjamin B. HaZ first shot to prominence in 2012 following the success of his faux Sci-Fi documentary Project Kronos. This was a true ‘word of mouth’ phenomenon, spreading virally online and which quickly landed HaZ his first feature film development deal in Hollywood. A visual effects supervisor, with credits including The Dark Knight Rises, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Prince of Persia, HaZ has now turned filmmaker and recently previewed his latest short film, SYNC. Set in the not-too-distant future of 2025, robot data couriers (Syncs) are used to transport information safely from one location to another, doing whatever it takes to get it there fast, and securely. HaZ and director of photography Adam Batchelor were joined for a screening of SYNC and learn firsthand how the duo used camera packages from Blackmagic Design, as well as a post-production workflow featuring DaVinci Resolve, to bring the film’s fast-paced narrative to the big screen. There was also question-and-answer session with HaZ and Adam following their presentation. HaZ Dulull, Writer, Director and Producer It may look commercial, but trust me, the things we did to make it happen were very guerrilla! That is the beauty of a project like this; we all had the passion, the drive and the commitment to make a Hollywood-esque movie on a shoe string budget, using locations and resources in ways you wouldn’t think of had we been following the rules of conventional filmmaking. Adam Batchelor, Director of Photography The Blackmagic experience was rewarding, exciting and more importantly easy! I think for the first time a high quality, professional digital cinematic image is available to everyone. BLG: Colour from set to screen Daniele Siragusano, Workflow Consultant at FilmLight Daniele utilises his experience & workflow expertise—gathered at CinePostproduction in Munich and dve Digital Video & Effects GmbH—to help customers achieve the best productivity and creativity in their own unique setups. Digital acquisition means that the image processing engine is vitally important for creating meaningful images from captured data. But in modern post workflows, there are different processing engines at every stage: monitoring on-set, dailies, editing, VFX and colour grading. Until now, communicating a consistent and flexible look—and modifying that look—was almost impossible, Camerimage 2014 39 Camerimage 2014 requiring re-rendering and -transferring every time you made creative changes. But there is another way. Join Daniele Siragusano to learn about FilmLight’s renderless and colour-accurate framework that makes it possible to control, communicate and finesse image creation ‘at every stage’ from set, to editorial, VFX and post-production. Daniele gave an introduction to the major grading techniques, as well as explaining the two prevalent colour management frameworks—ACES and Baselight’s Generalised Colour Spaces—from a creative perspective. The obvious brighter reproduction of lights than on today’s conventional projections or displays (without loosing dynamic range in the shades) provokes an emotional impact and is a powerful enrichment for new lighting concepts… Representative sequences, that were captured with a dynamic range of up to 18 stops and are displayed on a HDR-monitor show extraordinary saturation in highlights and low noise in low lights at the same time - that was the experience of presentation participants. Especially when it comes to visual arts, it is indeed challenging to be part of a globally recognized group of filmmakers. Although it is easy to put a product of artistic creation on the spot using newly developed media and social interaction, it is difficult to be recognized and visible among the thousands of others who wish for the same. CAMERIMAGE Festival’s organizers and co-operating individuals from the film industry have more than 20 years of experience in giving artists the possibility not only to screen their achievements to international audiences, but also to discuss and develop new ways of improving performance and – let us not be afraid to use the word – make their businesses even more thriving. In our history we had workshops, panel discussions and projects directed at various specialists, connecting and promoting best practices sharing, brainstorming the newest ideas and giving tools for further development in the arts industry. At the 22nd edition of the CAMERIMAGE Festival we have decided to link experienced talent agents who are often present at international film festivals with young filmmakers so as to discuss and work on the best solutions and ideas for cooperation between art and business. Camerimage 2014 43 Camerimage 2014 CAMERIMAGE Festival and the authors of the project invited to see Interrogation (Przesłuchanie) directed by Ryszard Bugajski and for a meet-and-greet with the film’s author. The film screening was preceeded with a projection of the short educational film History Lesson – the breakthrough. The film was completed the day before Martial law was introduced. It was banned from public viewing, so its official premiere was not until 1989. The film, inspired by Soviet trials in the 1950s, shows a harsh view of Stalinism and exposes the state of terror. Interrogation (Przesłuchanie) was my personal manifesto. I presented my attitude towards the reality that surrounded me for the most part of my life. A reality that was so very different from what I needed and what I imagined it should be. (...) My film is a manifesto of a man who wants to be free, regardless of the price he has to pay. It has reached almost every corner of the world. On the other hand, his drawings, paintings or installations are known to only a handful of the most faithful fans. Thanks to the persistent attempts of the CAMERIMAGE Film Festival organisers, Dylan’s paintings, exhibited extremely rarely, are finally going to be displayed in the Tumult Gallery in Toruń, Poland. Dylan made his passion for drawing known as late as in 1994, when he presented a series of sketches created during his tours in Europe, America and Asia between 1989 and 1992. The drawings known as Drawn Blank were usually made in charcoal or pencil, and later reworked. By using various techniques and materials Dylan recreated the Drawn Blank paintings in a number of different colour schemes. In 2010 the artist turned to a new medium – acrylic on canvas – and created fifty paintings known as The Brazil Series. One year later he presented another cycle, The Asia Series, which not only reflected his personal observations of life and people during his travels around China, Japan, Vietnam and Korea, but featured quotes from works by such artists as Edouard Manet, Paul Gaugin and Henri Cartier-Bresson. In 2013 Dylan displayed a collection of twenty three canvases dedicated to New Orleans, a city which he describes as ‘one very long poem’. The same year the National Portrait Gallery in London presented thirteen pastel portraits of his brush, featuring both his friends and fictional figures. His last project includes seven iron gates made of old metal objects welded together. The Revisionist Art series is of a similar nature, and features thirty collage paintings created from elements taken from popular American magazines. The Toruń exhibition showcased only a small section of Bob Dylan’s abundant and diversified artwork. It featured paintings and graphics created in 2008 and 2013 on the basis of the Drawn Blank drawings, as well as one of Dylan’s iron gates that he worked on in 2012 and 2013. The exhibition accompanying CAMERIMAGE is a real treat for Dylan’s fans and art lovers. Bob Dylan does not present his works very often, and he chooses the exhibition venues carefully. His highly personal approach to paintings and installations makes them even more unique. Needless to say, the exhibition of an outstanding poet, a three-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature, the man who revolutionised the rock music of the twentieth century, couldn’t be missed. The exhibition was an accompanying event of the 22nd edition of the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography CAMERIMAGE. Zofia Nasierowska’s works have been exhibited both in Poland and abroad and received many prestigious awards at international events, held in Budapest, Karlovy Vary, Glasgow, London, and Stockholm, to name just a few. Nasierowska occasionally dealt with landscape photography and made video coverages, but her true lifelong passion was portraiture. She portrayed a vast number of people known in the fields of theatre, film, art, and culture. In the 60s and 70s she was the photographer of choice for the majority of Polish artists and intellectuals, hence she came to be known as “the Polish Annie Leibovitz”. Her works included portraits of such artists as Beata Tyszkiewicz, Krystyna Janda, Jerzy Kawalerowicz, Anna German, Roman Polański, Tadeusz Konwicki, Anna Jantar, Piotr Fronczewski, Gustaw Holoubek, Irena Jarocka, and Irena Santor. At the same time, Nasierowska’s photographs were published on the covers of numerous weekly magazines: Film, Ekran, Zwierciadło, Przekrój, and Kobieta i Życie. The trademarks of her portraits were their carefully prepared lighting and appropriate take on the model, often somewhat idealising the person in front of the lens. Having worked as a photographer for 35 years, she eventually abandoned her career due to an eye condition. The artist died in Warsaw on the 3rd October 2011. Our exhibition was a perfect opportunity to experience her widely admired and remarkable works. The exhibition was organized under the auspices of the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship. This project was co-financed by the Town Council of Bydgoszcz. Exhibition prepared as a part of the “F-torki“ initiative. We also invited to the meeting with Janusz Majewski, husband of Zofia Nasierowska-Majewska, on Wednesday, 19th November, at Farbiarnia Gallery, Pomorska 68a/1, at 19:00.
