Olga Pasichnyk The concert arias of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – skillfully designed, cut and tailored with the precision of a master couturier to suit the voices of favoured singers – make up a theatrical piece where costumes, sets and even the libretto are of minor importance. Attention is focused on the inner world of the Hero who loves, suffers, despairs, seduces, doubts, hates, dies and… lives. A relationship with this music is nothing less than a voyage to a magical island on the liner “Orchestra” steered by the most beautiful of instruments – the Human Voice. 6 Wynikało to z obyczaju panującego wówczas w operowym świecie, a którego wcieleniem były tzw. Arii tej nie znajdą Państwo w naszym programie, w przeciwieństwie do pełnego gracji, melodyjnego ronda A questo seno – Or che il cielo K. 374, do tekstu z libretta Giovanniego de Gamerry Sismano nel Mogol (Sismano wśród Mogołów), którego Giovanni Paisiello użył w Mediolanie osiem lat wcześniej. W operze śpiewa tę arię primadonna, Zeira, uradowana powrotem ukochanego, Mozart napisał ją jednak dla kastrata Francesco Ceccarellego. Takie swobodne traktowanie materii ułatwiała prosta forma oper tragicznych i komicznych owego okresu: wszystkie posłuszne były z grubsza schematowi „recytatyw-aria”, gdzie recytatyw budował napięcie, aria zaś rozładowywała je, dając wyraz precyzyjnie określonemu afektowi, wedle powszechnie stosowanego katalogu. Gdy w roku 1789 wznowiono w Wiedniu Wesele Figara, przystroił arie Hrabiego i Hrabiny z III aktu girlandą ozdobników, przede wszystkim jednak – zastąpił dwie genialne arie Zuzanny (z II i IV aktu), by zrobić przyjemność swojej pierwszej Fiordiligi, Adrianie Ferraresi. W roku 1783 wystawiono w Wiedniu operę – znacznie odeń wówczas sławniejszego – Pasquale Anfossiego Il curioso indiscreto (Nietaktowny ciekawski), do libretta opartego na anegdocie z Don Kichota. Wystąpili w niej dwaj śpiewacy dobrze Mozartowi znani: Alojza Weber, po mężu Lange, w roli Clorindy i świetny tenor Valentin Adamberger, pierwszy Belmonte z Uprowadzenia z seraju, w roli Hrabiego. 8 W roku wspomnianego wznowienia Figara, 1789, panna Louise Villeneuve, pierwsza Dorabella z Così fan tutte, wystąpiła w Wiedniu w dwóch operach komicznych: we wrześniu jako Donna Laura w Dwóch baronach z Rocca Azzurra Domenica Cimarosy, gdzie Mozart obdarzył ją burzliwą arią Alma grande (K. 578), w listopadzie zaś – jako Madama Lucilla w operze Martína y Solera Il burbero di buon core (Dobroduszny zrzęda). To najczystszej wody „aria buffa”, w skocznym, punktowanym rytmie, gdzie liryzm i kropelka dramatu (w postaci szeroko rozpisanych pasaży, aż po niskie rejestry głosu sopranowego) dają znać o sobie dopiero w części drugiej. Mozart poznał Józefę w czasie pobytu małżonków w Salzburgu, w roku 1777; tam też napisał dla niej swoje pierwsze – choć w miniaturze – operowe arcydzieło: wielką, dramatyczną scenę (recytatyw i dwie arie przedzielone drugim recytatywem) Ah, lo previdi! K. 272, do tekstu znalezionego zapewne w Andromedzie Giovanniego Paisiella. Tekst arii, Bella mia fiamma K. 528, zidentyfikowany dopiero w latach 70. XX wieku, pochodzi z II aktu „festa teatrale” Niccola Jommellego Cerere placata (Ceres udobruchana), gdzie postaci znane z mitologii odgrywają intrygi typowe dla opery „seria”. Zrozpaczony król żegna się z ukochaną, błagając jej matkę i Alfea, księcia Elidy, by ją pocieszyli. Innej, niepospolitej śpiewaczce zawdzięczamy jedno z najniezwyklejszych arcydzieł w całej spuściźnie Mozarta: scenę i arię Ch’io mi scordi di te K. 505, do tekstu wyjętego z Idomenea. Cerere placata? Il burbero di buon core? None of these titles appear in Mozart’s list of operas, yet Mozart gave us a taste of them by encroaching on the works of other composers or by reaching for extracts of existing librettos in order to endow his favourite singers with a gift. 56 At the time such gestures were customary in the world of opera, epitomized by so called “arie di bagaglio”, in other words “trunk (i.e. suitcase) arias”. Travelling singers, cast in various operas were seldom keen to learn new music, so would reach into their trunks for replacement arias fashioned to suit the measure of their talent and capabilities and insert them as required. At times these were arias from other operas by the same composer, sometimes – from works by another. New arias expressly commissioned for a given revival with changed cast written by the original composer or by a local interloper, fell into a separate category, as did purely “concert” arias with no scenic direction – though occasionally these could also serve to that end. In the latter category, it was even permissible to change the hero’s sex: in fact the first of such arias intended for his beloved Aloysia Weber and future sister-in-law, renowned for her impressive vocal range and virtuosity rather than depth of expression, Mozart wrote to extracts from Metastasio’s L'Olimpiade (Alcandro, lo confesso K. 294) usually rendered by… the old king sung by a bass, as indeed in the second version of its musical setting written by the composer many years later! Needless to say, this particular aria is not featured in our programme, instead we have the graceful and melodic rondo A questo seno – Or che il cielo K. 374, set to texts from Giovanni de Gamerra’s libretto to Sismano nel Mogol (Sismano among the Mongols), which Giovanni Paisiello had exploited eight years earlier in Milan. In the actual opera the aria is sung by the prima donna Zeira, thrilled by the return of her lover, Mozart however wrote it for the castrato Francesco Ceccarelli. Such flexible treatment of material was facilitated by the simple format of tragic and comic operas of the day: all of which roughly conformed to the “recitative-aria” scheme where tension built by the recitative was relieved by the aria allowing for the expression of clearly defined affects in line with generally applied procedures. Moreover, librettos were also similar to each other, in serious opera (“seria”) modeled on the designs of Pietro Metastasio and in comic opera (“buffa”) – on those inherited from Carlo Goldoni. Exchanging pieces of such simplistic puzzles was not a problem: everything fitted in with everything and the result depended on the efficiency of the manipulator. Like every stringent form – neither did this one cramp the style of geniuses. Handel or Mozart viewed it as an incentive for moving freely within its rigid parameters, as did Petrarch, Shakespeare or Ronsard in the fourteen-verse sonnet; yet when the urge came along – they were able to deconstruct it for their own purposes, without destroying anything yet opening up new horizons in the process. Be that as it may, they also had to work within the system, occasionally putting their mastery at the service of prosaic ends. Handel would sometimes “improve” his operas with cast changes, often to the detriment of the original, and though in Mozart’s case it happened rarely, since in his short career he did not live to see many revivals, he also twice impinged upon his masterpieces. When in 1789 his Marriage of Figaro was revived in Vienna, he adorned the Count and Countess’ aria from Act 3 with a garland of ornaments, and moreover – replaced two of Susanna’s outstanding arias (from Act 2 & 4) to please Adriana Ferraresi, his first Fiordiligi. The new arias (Un moto di gioia K. 579 and Al desio di chi t’adora K. 577), now feature alongside “concert arias” in Mozart’s list of works as they are rarely performed on the operatic stage. Don Giovanni was less fortunate, as six months after its Prague premiere, singer pressure and… the indiscriminate tastes of the Viennese public, forced Mozart to revise the entire sequence of Act 2, for which he wrote among others, a grand scene and aria for Caterina Cavalieri who at the time was singing Donna Elvira in Vienna. Prima donna greed and audience conservatism implanted into the work this – albeit magnificent and exceptionally difficult – “concert aria”, even though it disrupts the Act’s already precarious structure and has nothing in common with the character. 57 58 Do unto others, as you would have them do to you? Mozart adhered to this admirable principle, in the same way as most mortals… In 1783 a production of – the then far more famous Pasquale Anfossi’s – Il curioso indiscreto (Tactless curiosity) to a libretto based on an anecdote from Don Quixote was staged in Vienna. It featured two singers well known to Mozart: Aloysia Weber, Lange by marriage in the role of Clorinda and the accomplished tenor Valentin Adamberger, the first Belmonte of The Abduction from the Seraglio, in the role of the Count. In the event only Aloysia sang the additional arias (K. 418 and K. 419) written for her by Mozart, as Adamberger yielded to pressure from the Italian camarilla and abandoned his rondo (K. 420). In the opera, Marquis Calandro decides to put his betrothed Clorinda’s fidelity to the test by encouraging his friend Count of Ripaverde to seduce her. Though unwilling to play the part of a seducer, the Count’s advances meet with unwelcome success. In her aria Vorrei spiegarvi, oh Dio K. 418 from Act 1, Clorinda reveals she cares for the Count (reaching a high soprano E in the first slow section to the accompaniment of a sensual pizzicato from muted strings), however at the eleventh hour she comes to her senses and to a frenzied Allegro sends the Count back to his beloved Emilia. In 1789, the year of the already mentioned revival of Figaro, Louise Villeneuve, the first Dorabella of Così fan tutte, was appearing in Vienna in two comic operas: in September as Donna Laura in Domenico Cimarosa’s Il due baroni di Rocca Azzurra, in which Mozart endowed her with the tempestuous aria Alma grande (K. 578), while in November – as Madama Lucilla in Martín y Soler’s opera Il burbero di buon core (The kind-hearted curmudgeon). In a revival of this work in January 2012 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona – the Catalan conductor Jordi Savall used two of the additional arias featured in our recording Chi sà, chi sà qual sia K. 582 and Vado, ma dove? K. 583, which were written for Villeneuve by Mozart, who in return one might say, did the Spaniard a great disservice… In all probability the original libretto and text to both arias was written by Lorenzo da Ponte, librettist of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. In the first of these from Act 1, Madama Lucilla having been severely reprimanded by her husband Giocondo, contemplates the reasons for his ill humour. It is the purest example of “aria buffa” in lively punctuated rhythm, where lyricism and a touch of drama (in the form of extended passages down to the low register of the soprano voice) only surface in the second section. The second aria appears in Act 2, once the reasons for Giocondo’s ill humour have been revealed: he has fallen into financial difficulties, and to make matters worse, his family is laying the blame – on Lucilla’s alleged extravagance. Following a dramatic musical gesture ("I go, but whither", where the punctuation comma is represented by an orchestral motif of hesitation) Lucilla pleads with the heavens to show mercy towards the fate of both spouses and in a lyrical, slow second section Andante sostenuto with an atmospheric accompaniment of two clarinets, two bassoons and two horns, seeks solace in matrimonial love. The remaining arias featured in our recording were composed under different circumstances, two of them however Mozart dedicated – within a space of several years – to the same, particularly favoured singer, Josefa Dušek. Née Hambacher, she was the wife of the renowned composer and virtuoso, František Xaver and though she performed at the Prague opera, her claim to fame was won principally on the concert stage. With her talent she seduced not only Mozart, but also… the young Beethoven who dedicated to her his famous, Italian concert aria Ah, perfido!, where Mozartian influence can easily be heard. Mozart met Josefa in 1777 during the couples stay in Salzburg: here also he wrote for her his first – albeit miniature – operatic masterpiece: a great, dramatic scene (recitative and two arias divided by a second recitative) Ah, lo previdi! K. 272 set to texts probably taken from Giovanni Paisello’s Andromeda. The aria was written a few months after his first, great piano concerto (E flat major K. 271), which would suggest that in both his favourite genres Mozart had reached maturity – simultaneously. Here parallels are unavoidable with another, twenty-two year old genius – Handel who 70 years earlier in Rome had composed a series of solo cantatas including several dramatic “scenes” of this type. The text (by Vittorio Amedeo Cigna-Santi, librettist of Mithridates) comes from Act 3, where Andromeda discovers Perseus in dire straits pacing the royal gardens brandishing a sword (the same he had used to slay the monster) and contemplating suicide. Certain that he will die Andromeda berates 59 his rival Eurystheus for failing to come to his aid, expressing her fury and despair in the first, heart-wrenching aria (Allegro, C minor) replete with chromatic dissonance and intervallic leaps. The aria suddenly melts into the second, longer and more sharply contrasted recitative (with six tempo changes) leading to the second aria, a cavatina in B flat major in a gentle and lyrical Andantino tempo, whose melodic contours are reminiscent of Zaide’s famous aria Ruhe sanft. Here Mozart alludes to an old tradition of “aria with shade” (“ombra” scene), where the hero or heroine enters into dialogue with a beloved “spirit” generally personified by an obbligato instrument – in this case an extraordinary oboe part. Yet even this cantilena fails to bring solace: Mozart abruptly interrupts it, Andromeda reaches for a dagger and in a heated Allegro announces her intentions to hasten after her beloved to the waters of the Lethe. 60 Having heard such an aria composed by a twenty-year-old youth, every sensible impresario would have signed him up to a life-long contract of six operas per annum; in reality it would be another four years before Mozart was to write his next opera, also drawn from noble ideals – Idomeneo, the only tragic opera masterpiece of his career. Mozart again met the beautiful Josefa ten years later in Prague on the occasion of Don Giovanni’s first performance. The Mozarts stayed with the Dušeks in their Villa Bertramka, in today’s Smíchov on the left bank of the Vltava. Legend has it that Josefa forced Mozart to write the long-promised aria by locking him in his room, while he reciprocated by swearing to destroy the aria if the singer failed to perform it faultlessly on first reading. The text to the aria Bella mia fiamma K. 528, whose provenance was only identified in the 1970s, comes from Act 2 of Niccolò Jommelli’s “festa teatrale” Cerere placata (Ceres placated) in which characters from mythology engage in intrigue typical of opera “seria”. There Ceres is the Queen of Sicily, where Titano King of Iberia rather than Pluto abducts Proserpina. The fugitives are captured and Ceres condemns Titano to death but later commutes the sentence to exile. Grief-stricken the King bids farewell to his beloved, begging her mother and Alfeo, Count of Elida to console her. The authenticity of the anecdote (as well as Josefa’s masterly skills) is supported by the pitiless intonational trap set by the composer for his taskmaster, for whom he wrote two sequences so jam-packed with chromaticism, that the listener almost loses his tonal “sense of balance”. Despite these difficulties, or perhaps because of them, the scene won concert-hall popularity as early as the first half of the 19th century. We are indebted to another exceptional singer for one of Mozart’s most exquisite masterpieces: the scene and aria Ch’io mi scordi di te K. 505, set to texts from Idomeneo where his two beloved genres of opera and piano concerto converge, with the singer accompanied by both orchestra and obbligato piano. The part was written independently for the soloist Nancy Storace, Mozart’s first Susanna of Marriage of Figaro, and probably first performed on 23 February 1787 during the singer’s farewell concert in Vienna. The work’s unusual performance forces no doubt account for the fact that one of Mozart’s flawless jewels is more often heard on recordings than in concert halls and continues to startle many a listener. Here the dialogue between Nancy Storace’s mezzo-soprano and Mozart’s piano is so brazenly sensuous (particularly when the hero “swoons” in pain to the words “alma mia mancando va”) making it difficult to dismiss the thought that the composer cared greatly for the then 22 year-old bewitching singer of Anglo-Italian origin… Even more difficult to believe are contemporary reports of the singer’s less than beautiful and somewhat abrasive voice. Mozart certainly heard in it something more – after all, he was an authority on voices. The programme of our recording closes with a diminutive and charming German arietta Nehmt meinen Dank K. 383, written in 1782, during the period of The Abduction from the Seraglio from which its principal motif is drawn. The piece was no doubt intended – as suggested by its incidental text – for some private festivities and probably sung by the earlier mentioned Aloysia Lange, who on this occasion would have had to abandon her sky-high acrobatics: as the range is almost within the stave while the catching melody and delicate accompaniment suggest an event of chamber character. 61 OLGA PASICHNYK Born in Ukraine, she studied piano and music teaching in her home city of Rivne and vocal studies at the Kiev Conservatory. Cerere placata?
