Dann könnte man z. B. in Feld-Ecken. Dann muss allerdings eine Plane montiert werden, damit der Lack des Edelstahltanks keinen Schaden nimmt. www.profi.de Field test Horsch Leeb 6GS trailed sprayer: Stainless steel Horsch has always fitted their trailed sprayers with tanks made from stainless steel, but this is not the only 'high-end' feature on these Bavarian sprayers. We put the new 6,000-litre Leeb 6GS trailed model with a 30 m boom through its paces for a full season. Hubert Wilmer H orsch and Leeb founded Horsch Leeb Application Systems GmbH in 2011. Prior to that, Leeb, having already developed self-propelled sprayers (profi 11/2007), introduced its first trailed models in 2009. These were updated last year (profi 10/2013) and last season we profi-tested one of them – the Leeb 6GS with the new ‘Boom Control Pro’ feature. We awarded the first 'plus’ to the ease of attaching the sprayer to the tractor, courtesy of a hydraulic stand (which is perfectly integrated in the drawbar and is strong enough to support even the filled machine effectively). And so the bottom-mount drawbar attaches easily to the hitch ball. The tractor’s link arms are no problem here: since no driveshaft is needed to power the machine’s hydraulic pump gearbox, which in fact is driven by the tractor’s ‘Power beyond’ couplers so that you can raise the linkage all the way to its end position. Regarding ‘Power beyond’, it is of course a great advantage if there is no heavy (and high-maintenance) driveshaft that needs attaching to the pto. But the drawback of Horsch Leeb 6GS sets the standard - not just because of its stainless steel tank. Photos: Wilmer this design is that it requires a tractor to match, i.e. one with a hydraulic system that is powerful enough to drive the 1,000l/m centrifugal pump and the extra piston diaphragm pump as well as all boom and steering functions. Horsch says it requires a tractor that offers a hydraulic output of at least 120l/min. But in our experience, even a Claas Axion 820 with a 150l/min swash plate pump had to rev its engine at 1,400rpm before the boom was willing to lift out on the headland while the pump was running. So, in the absence of general standards for hydraulic connectors and tractor settings, the whole system will only work if the load sensing system is set up correctly. This presents both a challenge and a problem for dealers when their customers want to hook their sprayer to a different tractor. Another intriguing idea is of course to use the tractor’s hydraulic system to control the sprayer’s operating pressure by controlling the pump speed. This way the machine is not circulating liquid when not spraying. The system worked very well even though we noticed a few temporary failures. Unfortunately, the feature did not save any fuel since we had to operate the engine at high speeds, as already mentioned. A real highlight is the stainless steel induction hopper complete with scale and gas strut for easy handling. The powerful container rinsing system has powerful jets and no-spray wall flushing jets. Together with the centrifugal pump’s 120/min suction rate, a 960l/min filling rate and a 3in suction hose, this is a perfect match made in heaven! Especially as the operator can program the cut-off filling level – courtesy of electric valve control. The only gripe in this department is the on-board control panel above the induction hopper, which has no display to indicate which function is currently enabled. If it had, the operator would not only be able to set the maximum filling level from the ground, he could also receive a warning when a section is still activated, which would prevent the suction cycle from starting. Conversely, we would appreciate it if the control box on the tractor issued a prompt whenever a rocker switch out on the sprayer was in the wrong position. It would be better still, if the operator could operate all functions from both the tractor and the ground. One issue is that the centrifugal pump is a fill-only pump and is therefore backed up by a piston diaphragm pump which shuts The induction hopper boasts a number of great attributes– a gas strut for easy handling, a scale, powerful induction jets and non-spray wall flushing jets plus a powerful container rinsing jet. Perfect! The control panel houses the valve controls, but we thought it lacked a display where we could enter a maximum filling level. You need to remove a panel to see the centrifugal pump, which pumps at a rate of 1,000l/min. The suction side is controlled by an extra piston diaphragm pump. TEST ASSESSMENTS Horsch Leeb 6GS off as soon as the centrifugal pump generates a pressure of more than 0.7bar. But since this is not the case during the filling cycle, the piston diaphragm pump keeps running even though it is not needed. It would also be nice if we could use this extra pump for pumping water from the clean water tank to the container rinsing nozzle and to the induction hopper’s rinsing nozzles whenever the spray tank is not completely filled. If this was possible, operators could add further chemicals to the mix in the field and inducting them with water from the clean water tank. All 10 sections naturally fold automatically via GPS, which worked a peach in our test. The so-called S-Box is only necessary for switching the sections manually when treating weed infested patches. Unfortunately, the box is also still a requirement on machines that are specified with the higher-end ‘Touch1200’ terminal. Otherwise it boasts a very neat, fully customisable user interface. Although, for a staggering €3,850 you would expect the display screen to be much more sunlight-readable. With nozzle connectors spaced very closely at 25cm, the flat spray nozzles and twin flat spray nozzles alternate to achieve an optimum coverage. height naturally contribute to its excellent or ‘very good’ stability. Although the empty machine’s kerb weight is 6,100 kg, it is fully compliant with road regulations. A 3,320kg tongue load and 9,780kg axle load ensure that the gross weight never exceeds the 14-tonne threshold, even when filled with 6,490 litres of water. Excellent! The next feature that scores an ‘excellent’ is the boom folding system, which unfolds the boom in 30 seconds and folds it in 20 seconds. Very fast! What we liked even better is the fact that the operator doesn’t have to worry about variable geometry, tilt correction or locking the pendulum. All this is fully automated and absolutely trouble-free, which makes up for the fact that Horsch does not allow the boom to be folded via the joystick, but instead forces the operator to push the buttons on the terminal. A few words about the terminal. We used both the ‘Basic’ control unit and the ‘Touch1200’ unit from Muller Elektronik and found that one issue with the ‘Basic’ model had not been sorted yet: when we retrieved the tank volume from the unit the information on pump, agitator, etc. disappeared. We bought the Horsch Leeb 7GS in spring 2013 to replace a John Deere 740. Our 27m boom has the '2-1' nozzle system and GPS section control. Thanks to 'BoomControl Eco' the sprayer just floats across undulating fields. When we are spraying herbicides at 10-12km/h and fungicides at 14-17km/h, we can run the boom very close to the crop, in fact closer and more accurately than never before. The sprayer is pulled by a John Deere 6150R, which is stretched to its limits only on the steepest hills. But because of the 114l/min hydraulic pump we always have to operate the tractor at 1,500rpm in order to supply enough oil to the pump gearbox, the boom and the Preliminaries dealt with, we eventually took the 6GS out for spraying and got carried away. The boom featured the ‘2-2’ combination tip bodies meaning that the pneumatic ‘Vario-Select’ double bodies were spaced at 25cm (rather than at the usual 50cm). And this type of body makes for effective circulation. The only detail missing in our view was an option that would allow operators to select priorities and heights for nozzle control. Added to this, there is no cross checking between the pressure gauge and the flow meter, which could help detect blocked tips, leaks and flow meter malfunctions for example. We achieved an optimum coverage when applying fungicides with a combination of IDKT 120-025 twin flat spray nozzles spaced at 50cm and IDK 120-02 flat spray nozzles. At the same time, with nozzle pairs spaced at 25cm, the manufacturer has cut the distance between boom and crop by 50% from 50cm to 25cm – which is the most effective way of cutting drift that we have seen up to now. This is facilitated by the magnificent boom control system. Suspended in a central pendulum, the boom is controlled not by springs and dampers, but by two pneumatic rams. These are controlled by signals from angle sensors and ultrasonic sensors and make the boom ‘hover’ over the www.profi.de steering system. We control the sprayer from the Muller joystick and the John Deere GS2630 terminal, which works well although we experience the occasional problem in communication between the John Deere and the Muller job processor. The boom control is a true quantum leap. German farmer Heinrich Funck from southern Germany has used his sprayer to spray cereals, rape seed, maize and beet in fields that are on average 3ha in size. Photo: private We have been using three Horsch Leeb 8GS sprayers with 36m boom since this spring. As we can operate the boom at such a small 40cm distance from the crop, we have been able to substantially reduce drift in our windy coastal fields. We have sprayed more than 24,000ha in this setup and not once did the boom touch the ground, nor did we notice any technical issues worth mentioning. The sprayers are operated by John Lutz Scheibler farms 4,000ha of land on the Baltic Sea in north east Germany. Photo: Haiplick Deere 6R and 7R tractors that are equipped with GS2630 terminals. Although there is the occasional 'communication problem', the set up works quite well. The boom control system needs plenty of air to work and so the tractor must have a reasonable air system. We would like to prioritise the jets and program the respective heights. The boom is mounted in a central pendulum and is controlled by two pneumatic rams which in turn are controlled by signals transmitted from angle sensors and ultrasonic sensors. An ingenious system! The trapezium suspension prevents lateral movement of the sprayer being transferred to the boom. Unfortunately the 'Touch1200' display screen lacks contrast in direct sunlight and needs to be complemented by the 'S-Box' when treating patches of weed. Another niggle is that the joystick houses no folding controls. crop. Perfect! On top of this, an extra trapezium suspension absorbs most of the sprayer’s lateral movement so that this is not transferred to the boom. Regarding movement - ‘our’ Leeb 6GS sported the optional stub axle steering which received nothing but praise as well. The signals are sent from a gyroscope on the tractor and courtesy of tilt sensors the slant correction worked perfectly as well. Before the steering deactivates itself, the wheels default into straight ahead position and the operator is prompted accordingly on the screen. He simply presses a button to move the wheels for 15 seconds to straightforward position - which is ideal during shunting and when manoeuvring in the corners of fields. Further details in a nutshell: profi 9/2014 11 ■ There is a pressure outlet at the rear to empty the tank. But the draining tap underneath the tank could do with being a tad bigger. ■ The tank’s underside is absolutely smooth and we measured an impressive ground clearance of 87cm. ■ Application rate control was not very www.profi.de Field test accurate when just one or two sections were activated; this was down to the low flow rate. ■ Those who use extra tramlines such as in slurry spreading can have the boom specced with twice as many sensors to ensure boom control is always perfect even though one of the sensors may be pointed at a tramline. ■ Attaching the individual hoses takes a while but is a doddle. Good advice for slurry spreaders is to attach curtains on the tank because the stainless steel hose ends are likely to damage the paint finish. Pneumatic suspension is standard fit and the Ackerman steering system works a peach. 2.05m wheels give an excellent 87cm ground clearance. Technical highlights Nearly all valves are controlled electrically and the hydraulic system and pump drives are controlled by the tractor's load sensing system. The oil is cooled by the liquid inside the spray tank. The linkage at the bottom which holds the tap serves as an adjustable end damper for the folding rams. The rams that lift/lower the individual booms (top) have linkages that hold angle sensors. Even the inner wings are impact-protected by a well-designed system of rams in addition to springs and shear pins. A system pressure of 70bar keeps the boom level and compensates for accelerations/ decelerations. The pneumatic nozzle control system also operates the nozzles that wash the lights, directing jets of water at the LED lights from a small tank underneath the clean water tank. ■ Once flushing is activated on the terminal, the internal cleaning system pumps water in cycles from the 530-litre clean water tank (with neat scale) through the flushing nozzles before it is sprayed out. Vice versa, if you activate the flushing nozzles from the ground, the pump will suck water from the spray tank, for example to circulate Agroclean in the system. However, the cleaning program will not activate the manual valves or clean the induction hopper. Last but not least, the prices. The base specification Leeb 6GS complete with ‘Basic’ terminal, 30m boom and test tyres costs just over €95,000 (all prices excl. VAT). The Ackerman steering system is a €3,300 option and the 2-2 nozzles including ‘Multi-Select’ a €9,050 extra. The GPS ‘Section Control’ system including receiver is listed at €3,160, the hoses at €3,000. So, the fullspec test sprayer comes with quite a hefty price tag of €113,600. Summary: The chemical induction hopper, boom and nozzle control together with the profi 9/2014 steering and boom folding system on the Leeb 6GS make Horsch the current bench marker in the trailed sprayer market. Furthermore, the sprayer features many forward looking ideas that will certainly undergo further refinement. One of the major challenges is certainly the oil supply from the tractor and one solution could be using a gearbox that is attached to the pto. This would involve further costs of €3,000 – a drop in the ocean in view of the nearly €113,000 premium price. 12 The 30m boom folds into a compact transport package; the hoses are no problem, although it is necessary to attach a curtain on the sides of the stainless steel tank to protect the paint finish. www.profi.de test pratique Pulvérisateur traîné Horsch Leeb 6GS : Inoxydable Horsch a toujours fait le choix de l'acier inoxydable pour la cuve de ses pulvérisateurs traînés. Lutz Scheibler posiada gospodarstwo rolne o powierzchni 4000 ha w miejscowości Poppendorf w Meklenburgii niedaleko Rostocku. System prowadzenia belki polowej to wielki krok do przodu! Opryskiwacz Leeb 6GS w wersji podstawowej z terminalem Basic, 30-metrową belką i ogumieniem jak w naszym teście kosztuje około 95 000 euro (podane ceny to ceny netto).
