Last week, I shared a
sad painting by Giovanni
Francesco Barbieri (Guercino),
St. Peter weeping before the
Virgin. This week, as we
joyfully celebrate Christ’s
Resurrection from the dead, I
share a very happy painting by
Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (Guercino), entitled,
The Resurrected Christ appears to the Virgin
(1629). In this image, Barbieri paints a nonbiblical scene that Christians have believed and
held since the very beginning of the Church. Oral
tradition of Christians from the time of Christ has
maintained that the Risen Lord appeared first to
the Virgin Mary on Easter Sunday, the day of His
Resurrection. Many saints have reflected about
this joyous Easter encounter between Mother and
Son. They point out that, unlike Jesus’ other
Easter appearances in the Scriptures, which were
aimed at proving his Resurrection from the dead,
the Risen Lord appeared first of all to his Virgin
Mother, not to prove his resurrection, but to
delight her at the sight of him.
The first saint to write about this meeting
between the Risen Christ and the Blessed Mother
is one of the four Latin Doctors of the Church, St.
Ambrose, bishop of Milan (b. 340- d.397). St.
Ambrose, writing a treatise on the excellence of
virginity, suggested that it conferred a special
integrity of faith: “consider that virgins merited
seeing the resurrection of the Lord before the
apostles.” St. Ambrose seems to imply that all the
women who visited the tomb on the Sunday
morning were virgins. He goes further,
contrasting the Virgin Mary with Mary
Magdalene. St. Ambrose writes, “the Virgin
Mary saw the resurrection of the Lord; she was
the first to see and believe. Mary Magdalene also
saw, but she hesitated.”
St. Ignatius of Loyola also writes about the Risen Christ appearing to the Virgin Mary. In the course of his early,
post-conversion pilgrimage to the Holy Land, St. Ignatius was aware of the standard itinerary of pilgrims to Jerusalem,
which included a visit to the chapel of Our Lady, “where Jesus first appeared to her after rising from the dead, as is
piously believed.” This chapel was described in pilgrim guidebooks in the fifteenth century. A diary of an English
pilgrim, Sir Richard Guylforde, described a visit in 1506 to the chapel of Our Lady in Jerusalem as “the very self place
where our Savior Christ, after His Resurrection, first appeared unto His Blessed Mother, and said, Salve Sancta Parens
[Hail, holy Mother].” Despite the silence on this in the gospels, St. Ignatius of Loyola tells us to use our common sense
in this situation. What would we do with our mom? Today, in the Holy Land, there is a small side chapel inside the Holy
Sepulchre, Jerusalem, the Franciscan Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. This chapel is also known as the Chapel of the
Apparition, in memory of the joyous encounter of the Risen Jesus and His Blessed Mother following Christ’s
Resurrection.
We sing with our Lady, in the Regina Coeli, “Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin
Mary, alleluia. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.” May the joy of Easter fill your hearts with much rejoicing and

On Saturday, March 12th we held our Knights’ Ball at the
Royalty West Banquet Hall. The new venue proved to be a very
good decision by the committee.
We would like to thank the Ladies of the Rosary, Holy Name,
and Hispanic Ministry for joining us. It was certainly a great
time.
The winners of the Grand Raffle were: Anna Hernandez $2,500.00; Carlos Salinas – $1,000.00; John Hughes - $500.00;
and Gene Dinon - $100.00. Thank you to all of our parishioners
who supported the raffle.
The ball this year was a very successful fundraiser for our
school. Our profit was approximately $8,300.00.

La semana pasada, compartí una
pintura triste por Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (Guercino), San
Pedro llorando ante la Virgen.
Esta semana, a medida que celebramos con alegría la resurrección de Cristo de entre los muertos, comparto una pintura muy feliz por Giovanni
Francesco Barbieri (Guercino), titulado, El Cristo
Resucitado aparece a la Virgen (1629).
En esta
imagen, Barbieri pinta una escena no bíblica que los
cristianos han creído y sostenido desde el comienzo
de la Iglesia. La tradición oral de los cristianos de
la época de Cristo ha sostenido que el Señor resucitado se apareció primero a la Virgen el Domingo de
Pascua, el día de su resurrección. Muchos santos
han reflexionado sobre este feliz encuentro Pascual
entre madre e hijo. Señalan que a diferencia de otras
apariciones de Jesús en Pascua, en las Escrituras que
tenían como objetivo demostrar su resurrección de
entre los muertos, el Señor resucitado se apareció en
primer lugar a su Madre la Virgen, no para probar
su resurrección, sino para darle placer al verlo.
El primer santo que escribe sobre el encuentro entre el Cristo Resucitado y la Virgen es uno de
los cuatro doctores latinos de la Iglesia, San Ambrosio, obispo de Milán (n. 340- d.397).
San Ambrosio, escribiendo un tratado sobre la excelencia de
la virginidad, sugirió que esto confiere una especial
integridad de la fe: "considerando que las vírgenes
merecían ver la resurrección del Señor antes que los
apóstoles." San Ambrosio parece dar a entender que
todas las mujeres que visitaron la tumba el domingo
por la mañana, eran vírgenes. El va más allá. En
contraste de la Virgen María con María Magdalena,
San Ambrosio escribe: "la Virgen María vió la resurrección del Señor; fué la primera en ver y creer.
María Magdalena también vió, pero ella dudó."
San Ignacio de Loyola también escribe sobre el Cristo Resucitado apareciéndosele a la Virgen María. En el curso de esa pre-conversión en su peregrinación a la
Tierra Santa, San Ignacio estuvo consciente del itinerario estándar de peregrinar a Jerusalén, que incluyó una visita a la
capilla de Nuestra Señora, "donde Jesús se apareció por primera vez después de resucitar de entre los muertos, y esto se
cree piadosamente. " Esta capilla fue descrita como una guía de peregrinos en el siglo XV. El diario de un peregrino Inglés, Señor Richard Guylforde, describe una visita en 1506 a la capilla de Nuestra Señora en Jerusalén como "el lugar
mismo donde Cristo nuestro Salvador, después de su Resurrección, se apareció primero a su Santa Madre y dijo: Salve

resucitado y su Madre Santísima después de la resurrección de Cristo.
Cantamos con nuestra Señora, en el Regina Coeli, "reina del cielo, alégrate, aleluya, Alégrense y regocíjense,
Virgen María, aleluya. Porque el Señor ha resucitado verdaderamente, aleluya ".

Podczas naszych
rozważań w zeszłym tygodniu,
podzieliłem się z Wami
smutnym obrazem pędzla
Giovanniego Francesco
Barbieriego (zwanego
Guercino), przedstawiającym
świętego Piotra płaczącego
przed Maryją. Dzisiaj zaś, pragnę Wam pokazać
kolejny obraz tego samego artysty. Jego tematyka
jest jednak o wiele radośniejsza; idealnie pasuje
do obchodów Wielkanocy. Chodzi o dzieło:
„Zmartwychwstały Chrystus ukazuje się
Maryi” (1629 rok). Barberi namalował tutaj scenę,
której nie ma w Piśmie Świętym, ale w którą
chrześcijanie wierzą od wieków. Ludzie od
zarania naszej wiary utrzymują mianowicie, że
pierwszą osobą, której Jezus ukazał się po Swoim
Zmartwychwstaniu, była Jego Matka Maryja.
Wielu świętych komentowało owe radosne
spotkanie Matki z Synem tej pierwszej
Wielkanocy. Komentatorzy zwracają uwagę na
jedną rzecz. W przeciwieństwie do innych
objawień wielkanocnych (poprzez które pragnął
On udowodnić fakt Zmartwychwstania), Chrystus
ukazał się w pierwszej kolejności właśnie Maryi,
gdyż chciał Jej po prostu sprawić radość.
Pierwszym świętym, który pisał o tym
spotkaniu Najświętszej Matki ze
Zmartwychwstałym, był św. Ambroży, Doktor
Kościoła i biskup Mediolanu (żył w latach 340397). W swoim traktacie na temat dziewictwa,
Ambroży stwierdza, że stan ten jest źródłem
wyjątkowej łaski: „wszak to właśnie dziewice
jako pierwsze przed apostołami ujrzały Pana
Zmartwychwstałego”. Święty Ambroży zdaje się
twierdzić, iż wszystkie kobiety, które w Niedzielę
Wielkanocną odwiedziły Grób Pański, były
dziewicami. Przeciwstawia również Najświętszą
Matkę Marii Magdalenie: „Maryja Matka Chrystusa jako pierwsza widziała Jego Zmartwychwstanie, i uwierzyła.
Widziała je także Maria z Magdali, lecz ona zawahała się w wierze”.
Kolejną osobą nawiązującą do tego spotkania Jezusa z Matką jest święty Ignacy Loyola. W trakcie pierwszej po
swoim nawróceniu pielgrzymki do Ziemi Świętej, Ignacy zawitał do kapliczki Matki Bożej, „gdzie, jak powszechnie
wierzą wierni, Pan po raz pierwszy po Zmartwychwstaniu ukazał się jej”. Owa kapliczka figurowała w przewodnikach
dla pielgrzymów już w XV wieku. W 1506 roku, angielski pielgrzym sir Richard Guylforde napisał: „Oto jest miejsce,
gdzie Zbawiciel po Swym Zmartwychwstaniu po raz pierwszy objawił się Matce ze słowami: Salve Sancta Parens [Bądź
pozdrowiona, Matko Przenajświętsza]”. Chociaż Ewangelie milczą na ten temat, święty Ignacy doradza nam podejście
zdroworozsądkowe. Jakbyśmy przywitali własną matkę? Współcześnie, Bazylika Grobu Świętego w Jerozolimie posiada
boczną kapliczkę. To franciszkańska Kaplica Najświętszego Sakramentu, znana również jako Kaplica Objawienia – na
pamiątkę radosnego spotkania Maryi i Jezusa po Jego Zmartwychwstaniu.
Naszą radość wyrażamy dziś słowami antyfony Regina Coeli („Królowa Niebios”): Raduj się i wesel, Panno
Maryjo, alleluja. Bo zmartwychwstał Pan prawdziwie, alleluja!” Niechaj ten szczególny czas Wielkanocy będzie dla
Was źródłem wielu wzruszeń i ogromnej radości. Wesołego Alleluja!

How Will Our Parish Benefit?
As part of the total $350 million goal, To Teach Who Christ Is will raise a minimum of $150 million to support local
needs in every parish across Chicago.
Our goal at St. Joseph is $537,000. We will receive 60% of the funds raised. We will also receive 100% of any
funds raised if we exceed our goal. This means St. Joseph will receive a minimum of $322,200 for our local needs
when we reach our goal!
Our share of the funds will be directed to improving:
Replace Church Air Conditioning Units
Replace Original Peaked Church Roof
Replace School A/C Compressors
Replace Church Flooring with Tile
