Festiwal przeciwko wykluczeniom 2/9 Lesbijki, geje i przyjaciele Wrocław 22 – 25 X 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EVENTS „Yes I am” - an exhibition of photography by Agata Kalinowska Agata Kalinowska’s works are a collection of portraits of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual people. In the author’s opinion it is ungrounded to say that there is a coherent community of that kind of people if you have a look at them close enough to discover their diversified background. At best it is possible to speak of subgroups within their local environments. What they have in common, however, is the similarity of experience. Each of the subjects was asked “Who are you?” because each speaks for themselves and follows their own values. Agata Kalinowska – a 5th year student of cultural studies, is in the course of writing her MA thesis and engrossed in vivid social life. On a daily basis she does snapshot photography together with seeking the sense of life. Agata represents Ośrodek Postaw Twórczych, to which she is as emotionally attached as to her bicycle and Wrocław’s district of Niskie Łąki. J'accuse… I accuse. The city without queers. A judgement on the super-masculine world of Tom of Finland. - a lecture by Bartłomiej Lis Bartłomiej Lis is not a critic or historian of art. He is involved with gender sociology as well as queer theory, which provide methodology for studying masculinity and homosexuality. Bartłomiej Lis is also interested in research on pornography, through which he studies gay (non-)masculinity. The lecturer will challenge the art of Touko Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland. His drawings and cartoons, often considered pornographic, found exhibiting space after their author’s death, among others, in MoMa. Our guest will try to analyse the interpretations and applications of his art, asking whether it is subversion overturning our view of gay (non)masculinity, an example of some fantasy impossible to fulfil or longing for the world (subconsciously) received, that is, amputated, archetypical masculinity. Or is it just a plain celebration of attributes, tools of power, shown in the areas where the culture usually places them, that is within the realm of masculine gadgetry? Tom of Finland rehabilitates homosexuality showing its power and beauty, giving back to homosexual men what allegedly they used to have. Thus he excludes from gay imagery the other types of masculinity, which contributes to the creation of essentionalized pattern of masculinity. Thus Laaksonen’s art with his use of pornography extends from specific subversion and senseless subculture of clones. Our guest will put Tom and his characters to trial. There will be prosecution and defence, while the lecturer warns that he will be far from neutral. At the end of the lecture the audience will be invited to discussion and the verdict on Tom of Finland will be voted. harmonogram: www.nts.uni.wroc.pl/festiwal kontakt: [email protected] 7. Festiwal przeciwko wykluczeniom 3/9 Lesbijki, geje i przyjaciele Wrocław 22 – 25 X 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Bartłomiej Lis (1980) – is a doctoral student at Instytut Socjologii UWr, currently writing a paper on gay (un-)masculinities. He tries to apply queer theory in his scientific exploration of “masculinity”. What’s morally wrong with homosexuality, Straight acting: a story about queers and sports - film shows: “What’s morally wrong with homosexuality” (with Polish subtitles, 57 min) Director: Marc – Antoine Serou Producer: Michael Einheuser 2007 Is homosexuality unnatural? Does it threaten the society in any way? Is it inborn and does that matter at all? In a provocative and humorous lecture dr John Corvino answers these and other questions, referring to the most frequent objections to homosexuality that come from religious doctrines, arguments of “unnaturalness” or the “social harm” done by homosexuality. Straight Acting (USA, video, 56 min.) Its director Spenser Windes demonstrates to us the world that changed his life – gay rugby. Windes wasn’t interested in clubs and partying, which provide the mainstream of gay culture. He was looking for a group of friends and found “Los Angeles Rebellion”. We will also see yearly gay hockey championships and gay rodeo. The film brings refreshment to the idea of “gay life” by showing how big a role can sport play in it. Homo-assimilation? The threats of homonormativity, dark side of identity policy. The resistance strategies of queers. - a lecture by Rafał Majka The lecturer will reflect critically on assimilative identity policy of gay-lesbian mainstream in Poland, which can be viewed as homonormativity. After Lisa Duggan, Matilda aka Mattem, and Bernstein Sycamore, homo-normativity will be defined as emphasis in LG policy on participance in institutions of heteronormativity’s hegemony, adopting the rhetorics and ethics of heteronormative neoliberal status quo, creating the social discourse on the basis of neoliberal paradigm and consumerism policy. The lecturer will try to deal with the following questions: what are the dangers of homonormativity? Why in the long run is the assimilative identity policy bound to bring an harmonogram: www.nts.uni.wroc.pl/festiwal kontakt: [email protected] 7. Festiwal przeciwko wykluczeniom 4/9 Lesbijki, geje i przyjaciele Wrocław 22 – 25 X 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ethical disaster and repetition of the same mistakes? How can bisexuality and intersexuality provide useful resistance strategies against homonormativity? How do they complicate the identity policy, making it pointless? The aim of the lecture is to consider what world and what life is our objective. Do we need (only) making inroads within heteronormative order? Is the “success” of LG in Poland to be measured by participance in each symbol of the dominant heteronormative, patriarchal, capitalist-neoliberal and imperialistic system? Or do we need a world opposite to that? Rafał Majka – a radical feminist, left-wing and LGBTQL activist. A co-editor of InterAlia – a magazine devoted to queer studies (www.interalia.org.pl) and a co-author of social activist blog “Dwugłos odmieńczo-nieprawomyślny”, a member of party Młodzi Socjaliści. Storytelling and the queer, that is „shaggy dog stories” - a lecture by Grzegorz Stępniak Queer up your life, that is tell mi your story and I’ll tell you how queer you are - a workshop by Grzegorz Stępniak Both the lecture and the workshop will introduce us into the technique of storytelling as a dramatic strategy, with emphasis on its highly performative quality. The lecturer will refer to the basic concepts of queer and gender studies in order to demonstrate how, with the use of narration, sex, race, and history are constructed in dramas and narratives for the theatres of ethnic and sexual minorities. At the same time, departing from essentialist defining identity, the lecturer will encourage the audience to discover it as a cultural construct created mostly by means of storytelling. Grzegorz Stępniak – a graduate of Theatre and Drama Studies at Jagiellonian University in Cracow. At Pittsburgh University Grzegorz Stępniak carried out research on Afroamerican playwrights and storytelling, which also his MA thesis focused on. Festiwal przeciwko wykluczeniom 5/9 Lesbijki, geje i przyjaciele Wrocław 22 – 25 X 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CONCERT Procesor Plus, Audre, ZrobieToSobie oraz dj Wojti BANDS PROCESOR PLUS The musical producer and founder of the band is Automatic Bitch Records, which promotes Polish Electro. Procesor Plus made its way to the scene in 1999 but not until 2001 after shopping for new equipment did it start playing more aggressive music with new sound and bits. The band collaborated with many performers and since 2002 has been working with Kapitan Nemo. Recordings by PP appeared on many compilation albums home and abroad. At the moment the band members also perform in a reactivated band 19 Wiosen, which they once co-founded. The music of PP is strong bites with electronically generated sounds, a synthesizer of saw-like sound, a distortion guitar, together with screaming vocal. ZROBIETOSOBIE The band originated in Wrocław in 2009. Its line-up are three girls. Martha: I’d like to meet an emotionally mature man in his 30s, a bachelor, catholic, with higher education, who yearns to love and be loved, create a permanent relationship till the end of life. I’m looking for a responsible person for the rest of my life. Martyna: I’m seeking somebody who will make me change into a princess after the first kiss… and that henceforth we will live together happily and long. Marta: I like tall guys, like to submerge in broad strong man’s arms, because I’m such a weak sex… “So Do You Still Think We Don’t Need Feminism?” In this tricky way the vocalists introduce themselves and invite to their premiere concert. AUDRE The band AUDRE was founded in Wrocław one and a half years ago. The band’s line-up are: Dobrusia – the guitar, Ewa – vocal, Przemek – the bass, Łukasz – the drums. They offer fast punk-rock with texts dealing with social and political problems. DJ WOJTI DJ Wojti is a promotor of acid/hard dance in Poland, and an active missionary among the youth interested in hard dance music. In the 90’s he collaborated with the hardcore punk team Homomilitia. Since 2000 he has also been recognized as s presenter of English acid sound. DJ Wojti has given numerous concerts in Poland and abroad. Over all the years of his musical activity his style evolved from uk acid techno to extremely saturated hard house/nrg sound, which however isn’t the typical bouncy sound, with which this branch of music is routinely associated: the sound of his records lies between hard house and techno. At the moment Wojti is regularly involved with party projects “instytute of house music pathology”(hard house/nrg/hard trance) in a Łódź-based club Oiom and “one stage tekno stage”. Apart from that Wojti is a member of Wrocław-based team Autonomia. harmonogram: www.nts.uni.wroc.pl/festiwal kontakt: [email protected] 7. Festiwal przeciwko wykluczeniom 6/9 Lesbijki, geje i przyjaciele Wrocław 22 – 25 X 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ VIZUALIZATIONS March The first march of lesbians, geys and friends in Wrocław. We are going to express our support for the move towards the Registered Partnership Act in Poland and to mark our presence in the streets of Wrocław. The marching rhythm of the march will be given by a drummer ensemble Samba RoR. We set off from Universytecki Square – the gathering at 2 p.m. near the statue of a fencing athlete. March Manifesto Come along with us! Join the Equality March of Wrocław! Demonstrate that you support the initiative of introducing the Registered Partnerships Act! Article 32 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland states: 1. All persons shall be equal before the law. All persons shall have the right to equal treatment by public authorities. 2. No one shall be discriminated against in political, social or economic life for any reason whatsoever. Thus according to the Constitution all citizens of Poland have the same rights and duties. However, almost 3 million Poles – lesbians, gays, and bisexuals – do not receive equal treatment from the State. Individuals living in same sex unions still! cannot enjoy the same rights that heterosexual couples do. As citizens, we Polish lesbians, gays, and bisexuals face the same obligations as heterosexual individuals do, while being treated by the State as second grade citizens. That is why we demand the Registered Partnerships Act, which will equalize the status of same sex unions with that of heterosexual ones. A few months ago there was established an Initiative Group for partnership unions, which repeatedly invited Polish Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet to co-operate. However, so far there has been no response. Thus we call for the current government’s action aimed at legal regulation of extramarital unions which will include lesbians, gays, and bisexuals so that regardless of sexual orientation each citizen would become equal in law! harmonogram: www.nts.uni.wroc.pl/festiwal kontakt: [email protected] 7. Festiwal przeciwko wykluczeniom 7/9 Lesbijki, geje i przyjaciele Wrocław 22 – 25 X 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Job market – the market of inequality - a panel discussion on employees’ rights of women in general and lesbians in particular The aim of the discussion is to expand the social awareness of women’s and lesbians’ exploitation in the job market in general and in particular in low pay service businesses, where they provide most of workforce. Also the political context of economic situation of women of different social background and status will be analyzed, together with the presentation of some options and strategies for the improvement of these women’s job market condition. This meeting will be an opportunity to have a closer look at the dynamics of discrimination and emancipation of women in general and lesbians in particular in Polish society within the context of the social problems which are seldom raised in emancipation discourse of LGBT organizations. The representation of gays and lesbians in the public life is quite often associated with forming the so called middle class and the esthetics of luxury items, while the subjects of emancipation are reduced to consumers’ status. This kind of representation leaves out of sight the truly excluded ones, for whom the low social status and job exploitation are everyday routine together with the symbolic violence and homophobia. A vital impulse for this discussion is also a search within the frames of intersectional analyses of correlations between different forms of social exclusion, like between the homophobia and the social consent to limiting employees’ rights. The panel will include 3 female experts and will be held on University’s premises. The lead in the panel discussion will be taken by Małgorzata Maciejewska, an MA in sociology and a doctoral student at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Wrocław. Barbie Girls Cabaret - BARBIE GIRLS – probably the best and absolutely unique Polish lesbian cabaret with a new show and an extended line-up. A live performance of Polish singer Alicja Majewska! Also unprecedented drag queen show, live music and a lot of surprises. Festiwal przeciwko wykluczeniom 9/9 Lesbijki, geje i przyjaciele Wrocław 22 – 25 X 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Off to Camp, czyli Różowy Narcyz i inne gejowskie fantazje - an introduction by Janusz Boguszewicz (homiki.pl) and the show of film “Pink Narcissus”, dir. James Bidgood. A cult gay film circulating in multiple versions all over the world. Its author, an American photographer James Bidgood spent 7 years on its shooting. The films photography started in a New York apartment in 1964. All the costumes and scene decoration were hand-made by Bidgood for day-to-day shooting of particular cuts. Actor Bobbie Kendall, playing a male prostitute, was placed in a satin interior, where his erotic fantasies were to come true. The pink-blue esthetics of the film surprisingly produces beauty bordering on kitsch. Silky bedclothes, fake fruit and flowers, and adorned mirrors determined the gay eroticism for the nearest decade. Despite the fact that the film has never been completed according to Bidgood’s plan, it still managed to become the symbol of gay underground of the 1970’s. Maska Twardziela (1999) - a film show The leading role: Jackom Katz Director: Sut Jhally While the concept of womanliness had been deeply researched, the profound research of the dominant role of masculinity until not long ago was virtually forgotten. It is the first educational film aiming at a systematic analysis of the relations between the pop-culture’s symbols and the concept of male identity at the decline of 20th century. harmonogram: www.nts.uni.wroc.pl/festiwal kontakt: [email protected]
