KenBolton T H I R DG R A D ER E P O R T The i989 seasonfor Third Grade beganwith a bang with the side winning the first five games. The rest of the seasonfailed to reach such dizzy.heights, witnlnly a handfulof wins sprinkledthroughoutthe restof the season. There are many reasonsfor this dramaricturnaround, two of which I wiil briefly outlinewhile attemptingnot to stepon too many toes: - The playing strengthof the club is nowhere near what it should be and this was highlightedwhen all gradesideswere hit by a plagueof injuries. The turnover of playersto the highergradeswas constantand the problemwasfurther aggravated when playersdecidednot to return from injury. As a result it wasa constant battle to turn out a team with the full complementof i5 players. There were too many playersdroppingout mid-season^or playingwhen it suitedthem. * Exceptfor early in the season, the side containedonly about half a dozenplayers at any one time who were committed enough to train the two nights a week consistently. For a team to perform well for a season, fifteen such players are needed. congratulationsto Luke Pattersonwho took out the team,sBestand Fairest, and Best Forward awards.Luke will be competingwith paul wigan for the ,,A', Grade Hooking spot for yearsto come. congratulationsare also in order to Tim power as he wasthe team'sBestBack. T h o m s o n C O L T SI R E P O R T Back in March, many peopleaskedme what the Club'schanceswerewith the Colts this year.At the time I said that I thought we had everychanceof gettingall three teamsinto their Grand Finals. Some may havethoughtthat I wasstill ridinghigh on the crest of the successof 1988. but I still believewe had the talent to achieveat leastthe equalof last year, if not to improve.Unfortunatelythis did not eventuate, for that. and asCoachI must acceptsomeof the responsibility 'seasonproper'got underway we startedwell for us.The week beforethe The season achievedthird place in the Easts'Colts SevensCompetition,an achievementnot realizedbeforein recenttimes. The first four gamessaw us play four of the top five in this year'scompetition: Souths,Brothers,Universityand Wests.lt wasobviousthat therewas not goingto be dominationof the competitionby any one team. camesomeof the bettermomentsfor Colts L Thesewere At this point of the season in the form of selectionof five of our playersin the BrisbaneColts teams.Four of and tour New Zealand' theseplayerswent on to gain QueenslandRepresentation All other Colts should take pride in this, for without your play beingof the high playersmay not have been noticed. Ours is, standardit was, our Representative after all, a TEAM game. Unfortunately, the remainderof the seasonwas one of inconsistency,at tirnes producingrugby of a standardthat couldn't be matched,at othersproducingefforts which would be better forgotten, exceptfor lessonsthat can be learned.lt is these lessonsthat I believewill make better playersof our Colts as they take our Club into the future. for the 1990 seasonand At this point I would like to make two recommendations beyond: 1 - That the QRU should make every effort to ensurethat the farcicalsituation in which we played Brothersand Universityfour times and all other clubs twice neverrecurs, evenif it meansa re-drawafter the startof the season. 2 - ShouldGradesand Colts play their homesgameson the sameday, Coltsgames are played at such times as to allow everyoneto watch First Grade. This may call for some co-ordinationwith the QJRU and AshgroveGPS, but it seemsto be imperativeif the aim of getting Colts and Gradesplayersto accepteachother as part of the one Club is to be achieved. The turnover for this year was detrimentallyaffectedby the abandonmentof severalhome gamesdue to weather conditionswith lossof perishablegoods.
