Poznan University of Medical Sciences POLAND ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ALUMNI 15 years of Medical Faculty II Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland (former: Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences) Following a decision of the University Senate, a separate Faculty of Medicine consisting of three Divisions, namely those of Medical Education in English, Dentistry and Postgraduate Medical Education was established in February 1992. The project got under way in September 1993 with the arriving of the first group of students from America and Canada who came to Poznan to study medicine in our 4-year MD Program in English. This program is designed for premedical college graduates, is based on the American curriculum and was planned for an initial intake of approximately 25 students per annum. However, now the class size is approximately 70 students due to the increased popularity of the program. Since a very beginning some 500 students have entered the 4-year MD Program. So far, more than 250 have received their MD diplomas and most have passed the U.S. licensing examinations and been accepted for residencies in American hospitals. After this successful start, a 6-year MD Program in English, based on the Polish/European model, was introduced 2 years later with the entry of a small group of Greek students in 1995. Over the years the size and composition of entry has grown and changed so that the current intake of students has also reached 70, mostly from Scandinavia but including some students from other European countries and increasing number of students from America. So far almost 400 students have entered the 6-year MD Program and more than 100 have received their MD diplomas. In 2001 we introduced a 5-year DDS program in English. On graduation these students will be eligible to practice in any of the 25 countries of the European Union or, by completing a statutory 2-year period of training in an American dental school, in the U.S. Some 150 students have entered this program so far and 8 have received diplomas. In addition to these undergraduate programs Faculty II fulfills all the graduate obligations laid down in the University statutes and defined in the relevant Polish laws. Thus, in 1993, the Faculty was granted the authority to award higher degrees in medicine, dentistry and medical biology. In the past years the Faculty has awarded more than 500 PhD’s, 80 individuals have had their additional higher degrees (habilitation) recognized by the Polish Central Committee for Scientific Degrees and the title of Professor has been conferred upon 54 members of the Faculty. Recent achievements include national accreditation of our dental program, receiving authority from the Ministry of Health to organize obligatory specialized postgraduate courses and the construction of a fine new building for the Dental School, the first custom built one in Poland. None of these projects could have been successful without the efforts of a dedicated group of people who believed in the high quality of Polish medical education and the professional skills of our academic staff. This group includes Professors Pruszewicz and Wiktor (our School representative in America) who initiated the project, successive Rectors and Deans who brought it to fruition and the continuing efforts of all the teachers taking part in it. An invaluable contribution has also been made by the students themselves who have been responsible for many of the improvements made to the various programs over the past decade. Finally, our claims of success are not without foundation. In several national surveys the Poznan University of Medical Sciences was voted the best Medical School in Poland in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. We have made a good start and are determined to do everything in our power to ensure that when we send our graduates out into the world they are fully equipped to serve their patients with the knowledge, skill and dedication they deserve.
