ANNA’S JOURNAL
Anna called me today. She told me she went
to the supermarket this morning and on her way to
the check-out she had to pass by the flower case.
The roses on display were simply gorgeous, so she
decided to pick out a bouquet to take home. Out of
the corner of her eye, she saw an older woman
watching as Anna chose her flowers. “So cheap!”
Anna was thinking to herself as she looked at her
bouquet. The other woman was still standing there.
“Hard to pick, isn’t it?” Anna said. “Oh, I cannot
buy any,” said the woman. “Too expensive. I just
come to look . . . so beautiful.”
This woman was grateful just to look at flowers she
could not buy! So I said to Anna, “Well, what did
you do?” Anna said, “I divided my bouquet in half
and said, ‘Please share these with me.’ ”
I know I am grateful right this minute for everything
God has blessed me with. Yet it seems to me that as
long as others do not have what I have, my gratitude
alone is not enough.
If others don’t have good, wholesome food to eat, a
home or even a roof over their heads, love and
friendship, work that rewards them, health and the
care to maintain it, then my gratitude is just the beginning.
It’s a door that opens to the next step. I can walk
through the door, which means sharing what I have
with those who have not, or I can close the door.
Then my gratitude becomes a dead end and I’m
trapped in my own complacency. I called Jim and
we’re going to sit down after dinner tonight when
the kids are in bed. It’s time to review our giving
again.

Dzisiejsza Ewangelia przypomina nam, że
w naszej ludzkiej naturze jest jakaś dążność do
wywyższania sie, do wynoszenia się nad innych.
Jakub i Jan zapomnieli o dziesięciu przyjaciołach
i chcieli zająć w gronie Apostołów najważniejsze
miejsce.
Ambicja jest czymś dobrym, stanowi ona
w pewnym sensie motor rozwoju człowieka, zmusza go
do wzrostu. Ale ambicja ambicji nie równa. O wiele
częstsza jest jednak ambicja chorobliwa, dążąca do
ustawiania ludzi u naszych stóp. Smutna - gdy stanie
W nauce Chrystusa
zawiera się przede wszystkim ogromna pociecha
i nadzieja dla wszystkich, którzy służą. Czasem czynią to
w wielkim upokorzeniu, pełniąc rolę „koszy na śmieci.”
W domu żona, matka, czasem ojciec, pracując od
świtu do nocy, słuchają tysięcznych wymówek i zbierają
uwagi i niezadowolenia swoich najbliższych. A przecież
to właśnie oni spełniają funkcje służebne wobec swojej
rodziny.
W pracy, osoba, ktora dobrze pracuje i spełnia
właściwie swoje obowiązki, jest najczęściej oskarżana,
chociaz wsyscy są winni oprócz niej. A ona wysłuchuje

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO
OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP
October 21, 2012
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
This year, the church’s annual celebration of World Mission Sunday takes on special
significance because it occurs during the opening weeks of the Year of Faith, while the Synod on the
New Evangelization is taking place in Rome. These three moments are intrinsically connected
because all of them are about faith: knowing our faith and sharing it so that we can bring it to bear on
every society where the Church has taken root, as well as in places where Christ has yet to be
proclaimed, or where faith in Him has grown cold.
It is most fitting that the Sunday liturgy is the setting for our Archdiocesan celebration of
World Mission Sunday, because it is participation in Sunday Mass that nourishes us, strengthens us
and sends us out on mission to witness to Christ. Through the Church’s proclamation of the Word of
God and our reception of the Body and Blood of the Lord, we are fortified to live as missionary
disciples and take up the work to which Christ calls us.
Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has reminded us that only Christ can truly fulfill the
hopes of all humanity because He alone can ‘‘heal, purify and fill all people with his presence.” If
others are to come to know Christ deeply, we must make ‘‘the unfathomable riches of Christ known”
by bold and yet humble witness to the difference He makes in our lives.
Our profound communion with Christ through our life in the Church should result in a
deepening of faith that is transformed into love. The Pontifical Mission Societies support the
missionary evangelization efforts that take place in 1150 dioceses throughout the world. Through
their efforts the love of Christ touches the hearts of countless people in every region of the world. I
commend the Pontifical Missions Societies to your prayers and ask you to be generous in your
support for their missionary outreach.
By participating in the missionary work of the Church, my prayer is that each of us will grow
in our ability to proclaim Christ by our lives. Thank you for your concern for the missions. May the
Lord abundantly bless you and those you love.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago
