This housing estate was built for the miners
working in the nearby mine. Its rich history
and interesting, early twentieth century
architecture contribute to a unique
atmoshpere, which makes an incredible
impression. It consists of inne densely builtup quarters, connected by distinctive
fenced-off crossings and the parish St Anna’s
Church, built in 1927. The housing estate is a
setting of many films about Upper Silesia,
among them „Sól ziemi czarnej” („The salt of
the black soil”) by K. Kutz and „Barbórka”
(„St Barbara’s Day”) by M. Pieprzycza.
Auschwitz Birkenau is biggest complex of
concentration and extermination camps
operated during II World War being well
known place as symbol of Holocaust and
genocide.
Today Auschwitz is transformed into
museum and memorial of about 1,5 milion
victims murdered by nazis there being only
that kind place inscribed on UNESCO World
Heritage List.
