Jest to projekt wieloelementowy, dynamicznie zmieniający się w ciągu sześciu miesięcy trwania, o charakterze „work in progress”. This grand-scale project aims to define the areas of artistic and intellectual reflection on issues pertaining to the future. Is the future already fairly easy to predict or is it still a topic that fires the imagination? Or maybe all our expectations have already been met and we live in the best of all possible worlds, which there is no need to change but only try to maintain status quo? Nowadays, thinking about the future means considering what we might shortly run out of rather than what we might be left with. Thinking in terms of a shortage seems an inspiring strategy, beneficial for aesthetic and social issues. Therefore, maybe in some areas decline would prove more advantageous than development, regress instead of progress? Because this question pertains to many areas of social and political life, it calls for a critical assessment of such absolute notions as capitalism and modernism, which incorporate the great idea of progress. Is progress the flywheel of our civilization or does it pose a threat? The idea of progress is one of the fundamental ideas of enlightened civilization. If it is, however, to continue as the prevailing idea, it should not be supported but its antithesis – the redefined notion of regress, which being understood as a restriction, withdrawal, slowing the pace, recycling and repetition would in reality become a trend of progress? Laboratory of the future Regress/Progress is a project which attempts to formulate the artistic and intellectual reflection on this. It is a compound project of a work-in-progress character, dynamically changing throughout its lifetime of six months. It comprises exhibitions, presentations, workshops, lectures and panel discussions, which will be attended by famous artists and representatives of many fields of science, art theorists, culture experts, sociologists, economists and political scientists. ► Paweł Althamer Mur / The Wall, 2011 specjalny projekt / special project Zespół szkół Lauder-Morasha oraz zespół szkół waldorfskich, ul. Staszica 11A, Warszawa. Paweł Althamer, ur. w 1967 w Warszawie, gdzie mieszka i pracuje. Rzeźbiarz, performer, akcjoner, twórca instalacji, filmów wideo. Lauder-Morasha school complex and Waldorf school complex, ul. Staszica 11A, Warsaw Paweł Althamer’s project has involved the cooperation of students and teachers in one of the school’s buildings. The schools are adjacent and maintain close and friendly relations, however the schools’ communities cannot, despite their keen interest, to freely communicate and integrate during recess or classes. There is no passage between the parts of the building which the schools occupy, and they are separated off by a wall form the outside, which was constructed for reasons of safety around the Lauder-Morasha school. Paweł Althamer suggested the school communities to get involved in a project entitled “The Wall”, which consists of two parts. The first stage, carried out on 20 and 21 June, is a workshop, which will be attended by students from both schools. During the workshop, the students will attempt to discuss the present situation of their schools, which results from safety requirements, represented in part by the wall, and analyse its various determinants and suggest their own solutions that reflect their point of view. The second stage, to be carried out in September at the beginning of the school year, will be devoted to the implementation of the solutions suggested by the students. One of the envisaged solutions to presented at the first workshop, which might be considered idyllic, yet still worth 3 implementing, even for a brief moment, is the construction of an overpass over the wall separating the two schools. Paweł Atlhamer, born in 1967 in Warsaw, where he lives and works. Sculptor and performance artist working in video, installation and action art. Zasłynął serią monumentalnych interwencji typu environment art, z użyciem prochu w przestrzeni otwartej, przeznaczonych do oglądania z lotu ptaka. In early summer this year at the CCA in Warsaw Cai Guo-Qiang is going to present Summer Solstice. Already when approaching the Castle, we can see lush birches growing out of its towers. Meditation on the passage of time, circularity of nature and fleetingness of life characteristic for Eastern art is inscribed into the Slavic mysticism of the birch. “Birch trees have long served the creativity of the artists, the bark having preceded paper as a medium for drawings and poetry. Today, birch trees grow out from within the museum building, the museum becoming their home, like a bonsai pot. The white branches reach out of the windows, waving like spirited flags. They look as though they have grown wildly from the bird droppings on the windowsill. And the artist too is a bird,” writes the artist. And so, contemplating an intriguing bonsai birch in the home of the Muses (mouseion), we enter the circular and cyclical time of nature. Cai Guo-Qiang is a Chinese-born artist who has worked in New York for the past 16 years. Pyrotechnical projects and multimedia large-scale installations are his artistic flagship. He made a name for himself with a series of monumental interventions of environmental art with the use of gunpowder in open space, intended to be admired from a bird’s eye view. 4 ► Simon Leung WAW, 1993 - 2011 kurator / curator: Rirkrit Tiravanija WAW jest trylogią autorstwa Simona Leunga, owocem dwudziestoletniej współpracy z pisarzem i tłumaczem Warrenem Niesłuchowskim. Składają się na nią obrazy: Warren Piece (in the ‘70s), War After War oraz Artist in Residence, stanowiące rozbudowaną refleksję nad życiem przeżywanym poza granicami konwencjonalnego społeczeństwa. Uczestniczył min. w Biennale Weneckim (2003), Biennale Withney (1993) oraz wystawiał prace w Pat Hearn Gallery, Fundacji Generali (Wiedeń), 1a Space (Hongkong), NGKB (Berlin) i w Sala Mendoza (Caracas). W roku 2008 otrzymał stypendium Guggenheima i nagrodę Art Journal za esej zatytułowany „The Look of Law”. WAW is a trilogy of Simon Leung’s two-decade collaboration with the writer/translator Warren Niesłuchowski. Consisting of Warren Piece (in the ‘70s), War After War, and Artist in Residence, they are an extended meditation on a life lived beyond the boundaries of conventional society. A Warsaw resident since 2005, Warren’s life is a singular approach to survival. Born in a refugee camp just after WWII, he immigrated to the United States as a child and was a conscript in the US military during the Vietnam War. When he became a deserter, he found his way to Paris just in time for May ’68, which irrevocably altered his perception of being in the world. Leung’s projects pick up on strands of Warren’s stories, expand them into extended portraits that reconsider both the specific biography of one man and how they generate models to reflect on the technology and artistry of “selfhood” which Leung proposes is, like the myth of historical progress, a repetition of themes rather than realities. WAW is where Warren has landed, and where he will, like a migratory bird, take off again. 5 Simon Leung was born in Hong Kong and studied at the University of California Los Angeles, Columbia University, and the Whitney Independent Study Program. Leung has participated in the Venice Biennale (2003), the Whitney Biennial (1993) and has also exhibited at Pat Hearn Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Generali Foundation (Vienna), 1a Space (Hong Kong), NGBK (Berlin), and Sala Mendoza (Caracas). In 2008, he received a Guggenheim fellowship and the Art Journal Award for his essay The Look of Law. Simon Leung WAW, 1993 – 2011 Projekt specjalny / special project składa się z 3 prac / consists of 3 works: *** Simon Leung Warren Piece, 1993 (remake 2011) fotografie, teksty, 3 wideo / photographs, texts, 3 videos Praca Warren Piece (in the ‘70s) powstała w 1993 roku, gdy Warren pracował w PS1 w Nowym Jorku, a Leung był tam artystą-rezydentem. Warren Piece (in the ‘70s) was made in 1993 when Warren was an employee and Leung was an artist-in-residence at PS1 in New York. It is comprised of five wall pieces and three videos (on monitors) generated from their process of collaboration and Leung’s reflections on Warren’s life and PS1’s first exhibition, “Rooms.” The videos show the collaborators doing Grotowski exercises; a narrative of Warren’s life between 1968-1975; and an interview with Vito Acconci, on among other topics, his participation in “Rooms.” War After War is simultaneously a 90-minute linear film and a cyclical video loop designed to duplicate what Leung considers as Warren’s existence in the figure of a cosmopolitan / nomad / guest / refugee, coming and going as he stays with friends through out Europe and America. Immanuel Kant’s essay “Perpetual Peace” functions as a script of the film. Warren’s friends who over the last decade have provided him a temporary bed narrate the passages. *** Simon Leung Artist in residence, 2011 fotografie na plexi, drewno, stal, 3 wideo photographs on plexiglass, wood, steel, 3 videos Artist in residence to projekt koncepcyjny, posiadający zarówno formę fizyczną, jak i będący rzeźbą wykorzystującą obraz wideo. Artist in residence is a conceptual project that also finds a physical form as a video sculpture. For Leung’s project at the MAK Center in Los Angeles earlier this year, he arranged for Warren to be an “artist in residence” (as Leung’s work). This project is based on both the logic of Warren’s needs as a professional guest and on Leung’s PS1 project when he was the artist-at-residence. The three videos (on flat screens) are loosely based on the three earlier videos from 1993. The future will have hardly anything to do with the mid 20th-century imagination of a technologised world, dominated by refined surfaces. we much more think the future to be raw and very straight forward. spaces will be more stressed than today, as technologically super-advanced appliances will be at hand of humans, which, on the other hand, are missing basic access to support their life and happiness. we want to create a setting resembling some aspects of a stage, which allows to get behind some scenes. the room is entered through time-tunnel-structures, which mark the transit from today to our future vision of the GRATED FUTURES. the spine of this world is a wormhole that lets one travel through time and space. it turns from a table into a terrace garden into a sitting landscape and ends in the enclosed sacred space which contains the 8 ‘dream machine’. a series of frames, partly fitted with curtains, mark different episodes on the way through the wormhole. the spatial setting, being not a dead object but a living space that is lived in, aims at elaborating political and social relationships by opening to a public discussion. raumlaborberlin is a network-collective of 8 architects in Berlin, founded in 1999, which works interdisciplinarily on issues of architecture, urban planning, art and performance. The focus of raumlaborberlin’s works is urban transformations and relationships between private and public space. Artistic and architectural interventions serve as tools of communication and procesual design, at the intersection of culture and planning. ► Wystawy: GDZIE JEST ZIELONY KRÓLIK? / WHERE IS THE GREEN RABBIT? KRAJOBRAZ PRZYSZŁOŚCI / LANDSCAPE OF THE FUTURE ► GDZIE JEST ZIELONY KRÓLIK? / WHERE IS THE GREEN RABBIT? kurator / curator: Ewa Gorządek Hubert Czerepok, Fischli & Weiss, Vadim Fishkin, William Kentridge, Robert Kuśmirowski, Aleksandra Mir, Steven Pippin, Sascha Pohflepp Zielony królik Alba to żywe dzieło sztuki stworzone na zamówienie amerykańskiego artysty Eduardo Kaca. Kac współpracował z francuskimi naukowcami, którzy wszczepili do genomu królika gen zielonej fluorescencji. The green rabbit Alba is a live work of art created for the American artist Eduardo Kaca. Kac cooperated with French scientists who introduced a green fluorescence gene into the rabbit’s genome. The fur of Alba, a red-eyed albino, glows green when illuminated by invisible ultraviolet light. Kac presented Alba for the first time at a festival in Avignon in the year 2000 and the green rabbit immediately became a symbol of the incredible, albeit disturbing, future world of advanced science and technology. In the “Laboratory of the Future – Regress/Progress” part of the exhibition, which addresses the issue of the relation between art and disciplines of science and technology, one will not encounter works that resemble technologically advanced creations. The “green rabbit” is absent and the displayed works often only indirectly refer to the imposed theme. They provoke reflection on the relativity of such notions as “progressive” and “regressive” in the context of the future, which always involves a great deal of speculation. Technological development is accelerating rapidly and changes which result are visible in every aspect of life. Art also attempts to make use of this potential in various ways. Kac’s green rabbit or the third ear implanted into Stelarc’s forearm are perhaps the most spectacular examples of this. The theme of technology at the exhibition is approached with melancholy and reflection, inspiring thought and contemplation rather than encouraging to marvel at the possibilities that 21st century advanced technology and science create for art. ► KRAJOBRAZ PRZYSZŁOŚCI / LANDSCAPE OF THE FUTURE kurator / curator: Fabio Cavallucci Michał Budny, Søren Dahlgaard, Christian Falsnaes, Carlos Garaicoa, Elodie Pong, Katarzyna Przezwańska, François Roche, Superflex, Nico Vascellari. In the present exhibition, the landscape does not denote a feature of the surrounding environment but a cultural setting, a sort of mental space. Rather than attempting to envisage the environment of the future, it seeks to discover our perception of this environment. We will live in a two-layer reality, where natural mountains or urban agglomerations intertwine in our minds with those seen on our computer screens. Apart from catastrophic visions, such as climatic changes, or the naïve and childish images of humankind that survives as a reborn one, there is the conjecture of regression, a return to basic shapes and plain materials. Notions of recycling and collecting continue to seem the most credible hypotheses for the near future. The artists Søren Dahlgaard, Christian Falsnaes, Carlos Garaicoa, Elodie Pong, Katarzyna Przezwańska, François Roche, Superflex and Nico Vascellari were chosen not on the basis of a purely rational and premeditated judgement but by sheer serendipity, in an attempt to invoke the notion of the landscape in the mind of the viewer rather than describing it – presenting a future that no one can know today. 11
