Czeka Was również relacja z pierwszego Exchange Zone i kontynuacja opowieści z USA. Warto rozwiązać krzyżówkę - mamy dla Was nagrody. Czeka Was mnóstwo zabaw, ciekawostek i fascynujacych przeżyć, a wszystko to w klimatach tureckich i greckich. Zapraszamy! Znam trzy języki obce: angielski, niemiecki i francuski. KIEDY? 15.01.2013 (wtorek), godz. 19:00 GDZIE? Faktycznie, argumenty mieli silne. No sé si me explico. According to historical records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be dated back to 776 BC. It’s been quite a while, right? Let’s move to the Ancient Greece where it all began. Participants and events. Participation in the ancient Olympics was allowed only for free-born male Greeks. During the games, participants had no clothes, they were naked. At first, Olympics contained one event – the “stadion race”. It was a short foot race measuring about 200 meters. The number of events was gradually increasing. Generally, the list of events during ancient Olympic Games was as follows: - a foot race of one lap of the stadium - a foot race of two laps of the stadium - steeplechase foot race - foot race for runners in full armour with helmet and greaves, carrying a shield - boxing - boxers fought until one man was knocked out, or admitted he had been beaten - wrestling - this event was finished by throwing the opponent on the ground - pankration - combination of boxing and wrestling - chariot-racing - the pentathlon which contained five separate events: wrestling, long jump, javelin throw, discus throw and running The winner is… only one! Yes, it’s true. There was only one winner of the Ancient Olympic Games. The prize for the winner was the olive wreath. It was something like a crown made of wild-olive leaves from the tree which grew at Olympia, next to the Zeus’s temple. What’s more, winner was entitled to have a statue of himself set up at Olympia. The winner was very famous, and not only him. His success caused big fame and reputation of his community in the whole Greek world. It was normal for winners to receive some benefits like for example having all their meals at public expense. What can be 6 interesting, during the recent Olympic Games in Greece (Athens 2004), the ancient tradition was recalled by giving the olive wreaths to the victors. Sport vs. religion. Religion was very important on the ancient Olympic Games. The games were held in honor of the Greek God Zeus. Before any event took place, the athletes, their fathers and trainers had to swear an oath to Zeus, that they have trained for 10 months and that they will obey the rules during the competition. After that, they made sacrifices to Zeus. The peace please. Fighting was forbidden during the Games, seven days before and seven days after that. No matter how long and fierce the battle was, every soldier put down his weapons and traveled to Olympia in order to compete in athletic games. First of all, it’s connected with the fact of religious character of Olympics. Of course, one should remember that a lot of Greeks were very good at sport and fighting simultaneously. To give the opportunity to attending in Olympics, wars had to be suspended. It’s sure that commanders would not want to leave the fighting by their best soldiers. Anyway, any reason is good to stop the war even for a while, don't you think? It has land borders with Albania, Scopia, Bulgaria and Turkey, while it is surrounded by the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Although it is the 94th bigger country in the world (with a total area of 131,990 km2), Greece has the 11th longest coastline in the world at 13,676 km in length, due to its numerous islands (approximately 1,400). Greece is a member of European Union (since 1981) and eurozone (since 2001). Its population exceeds 11,000,000. Athens is the country’s capital and the largest city (including the port of Piraeus as well) with a total population of 4,000,000 persons approximately. The second largest city is Thessaloniki (almost 800,000 inhabitants) and then Patras, Heraklion and Larissa. According to archaeological facts, it is believed that life in Greece started before 100,000 years. From prehistoric times till antiquity, it has been the place of rise and fall for some of the most important civilizations such as the Cycladic, the Minoan and the Mycenaean civilization. In antiquity, there was not a united Greek country. There were many cities-countries. During the ages, Athens, Sparta, Corinth and Thebes were the most powerful and dominant cities. Athens has been famous all over the world for its great achievements in culture and politics, mainly during the Golden Age (500 BC to 300 BC). Sparta was always famous for its great military organization focusing on its great army. Alexander the Great was the man that 8 first united Greeks and created the first Greek empire (with borders from Greece and Egypt till Pakistan, India and Himalayas). The death ofAlexander meant the end of his empire. After Roman occupation, Greece was also the place of rise of the Byzantine empire. Constantine the Great (57th emperor of Roman empire) established the new capital, Constantinople. Till the fall of Constantinople (1453 AC), the Byzantine empire lasted for almost 1,000 years. Greeks remained under the occupation of Ottomans for almost 400 years till 1821. Finally, Greece became an independent country on 1830 as it still remains. Greek civilization has great achievements in culture, arts, philosophy, politics, science and sport. It is the birth place of philosophy, theater, drama and the political system of democracy. There are plenty of monuments, from antiquity till 20th century, showing innovation in architecture, sculpture and painting meanwhile there are numerous bright examples in literature, laws, dance and music. It is also the place where mathematics, geometry, physics, mechanics and chemistry were initially developed, as well as the Olympic Games were held. Names like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Euripides, Sofokles, Pheadias, Pericles, Archimedes, Pythagoras, Euclides, Democritus are only a small sample of Greek pioneers. Akropolis, Parthenon, Thision, Sounio, Delphi, Olympia, Epidaurus, Pella, Knossos, Mycenes are some of the most famous monuments in Greece. It is one of the top-ranking universities in Greece, and ranked between 501st-550th in the world according to the QS World University Rankings 2012. Of course the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens could not be left out of the great European Union student exchange programme (ERAMUS) so in the framework of the LLP Erasmus programme, it has established bilateral agreements in specific scientific areas with more than 300 European Universities, with which it exchanges annually an increasing number of students for undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral studies. Besides Erasmus, there is also a large number of bilateral agreements of scientific cooperation and exchanges with Universities of all continents.Such programmes are the DSU,Arcadia scholarships, IES abroad. Furthermore, if you already have your degree and you search for a practice job, the university throught the AIESEC programme can help you find a place in a company abroad in all over the world. So, if you are thinking about going for ERASMUS in Greece and study in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, you won’t have any problem! There is a wide range of courses in your field of studies that you can choose and the well-experienced and nominated proffessors are really friendly and willing to help adjust yourself in the university. For more informations about the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Erasmus programme click on these links: http://en.interel.uoa.gr/llp-erasmus.html As far as the Greek cuisine is concerned, we can described it as Mediterranean cuisine which makes wide use of olive oil, vegetables and herbs, grains and bread, wine, fish, and various meats, including poul- try, rabbit and pork. Also important are olives, cheese, eggplant (aubergine), zucchini (courgette), and yogurt. Greek desserts are characterized by the dominant use of nuts and honey. Everything is tasteful in Greek cuisine but let me distinguish some particular dishes, such as: 1)Moussakas which is made by potatoes, eggplant and béchamel sauce 2)The greek salad which includes tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, feta cheese, and kalamata olives, dressed with olive oil. 3) Soutzoukakia Smyrneika which are long shaped meatballs with cumin, cinnamon and garlic and boiled in tomato sauce with whole olives. Often served with rice or mashed potatoes 4) Trahana soup made from a dried grain-dairy substance. 5) Spetsofai which is a stew of country sausage, green mild peppers, onions and wine 6) Fasolada which sometimes called "the "national food of the Greeks". It is made of beans, tomatoes, carrot, celery and a generous amount of olive oil usually served with a variety of salty side dishes. Greece is a beautiful country that combines sea and high mountains. Either you want to swim and enjoy the sun or go for skiing and mountain climbing, you can do both! Characteristic examples are the mount Olympus, which is the higher mountain in Greece and it’s higher peak reaches to 2,917 ft (considered to be one of the highest peaks in Europe) and the Porto Katsiki beach in Lefkada island, which is one of the most outstanding beaches in Greece and the second one in whole Europe. For sure you won’t get bored in this country where you can not only enjoy the good Mediterranean climate but also talk with friendly greek people who are warm and open to any kind of discussion. On l`attend ! Il s`agit d’un combat du bien contre le mal, Zagłosuj na ten artykuł na stronie www.blabel.agh.edu.pl/gazeta Polską wersję językową tego artykułu znajdziesz w wydaniu elektronicznym 11 THE BLABELS Joanna Grzybowska My job in USA was supposed to be a means to an end – a great trip. Only it wasn’t. It was something more. The job itself gave me a lot of satisfaction and taught me a lot of things. Sure it wasn’t an ambitious job related to my education (kitchen staff) but I’ve gained a lot of experience in fields such as international relations, good time organization and teamwork. I think that for my selfdevelopment these skills are as important as educational background. Furthermore, during my 3 month work I’ve learnt a lot about American culture and I’ve met a lot of Americans who turned out to be very welcoming and interested in my country. A job on a summer camp means to deal with kids all the time and despite the fact that it requires some patience (for sure it concerns more the counselors than kitchen staff, but still), it is pretty awesome to see a continuous excitement and joy in children’s eyes. I really appreciate the opportunity to work and live for 3 months with so many great people. We’ve finally reached the point when it was time to hit the road! We were planning our trip (for those who didn’t read my previous articles: by we I mean me and my boyfriend – Mateusz) for about one month while working on a camp. Of course we did it after work, in our free time ( We’ve made almost all accommodation reservations and a 12 car reservation, we’ve booked flight tickets and we’ve made a quite detailed plan including all the things we wanted to see. To do that, we had to check as many details as possible, for example the opening hours. Our trip started with a flight from Little Rock to Las Vegas. We spent there one night (didn’t win anything in casinos () and we started our car trip. Our checkpoint was on the border between the US states of Nevada and Arizona – the Hoover Dam. Then we went to Grand Canyon National Park where we spent two nights. We didn’t have a tent so we were sleeping in our car. Believe me, it is not comfortable, so if you have the opportunity to buy a tent – don’t hesitate. On our way to Los Angeles we visited Joshua Tree National Park. In LA we spent one day on Venice Beach and we went to see Hollywood. Then we continued our trip to Santa Barbara where we spent a night on a campground by the ocean. On our way to San Francisco, we visited Firestone Vineyard and we continued our journey on California State Route 1 through Central Coast and Big Sur. As we reached San Francisco, the climate has changed. We had to go shopping to buy some warm clothes. Despite the humid and cold weather we really loved San Francisco, but we had to get to Las Vegas again (through Yosemite National Park, Silver Lakes and Death Valley) to leave our car (by the way it was the best and the biggest car I’ve ever driven) and fly to New York. In New York we spent one week. It is certainly not enough time to see everything what’s interesting in this city. Although, we did our best. We’ve seen a lot of breathtaking places, for me the most exciting was the tall ship sail with an amazing view on the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan skyline. I was planning to write some more articles about my trip and my tips for you. Unfortunately, my plan has been changed and this is my last article in The Blabels. In this article I’ve focused on general issues of my travel so if you have any more questions feel free to contact me via Facebook. I hope you found my information useful and encouraging to conquer the world. Good luck and see you out there. Zagłosuj na ten artykuł na stronie www.blabel.agh.edu.pl/gazeta THE BLABELS Joanna Grzybowska The carnival is about to begin so I’ve decided to recommend you a recipe for a dish which you can serve on a party as a snack or hors d’oeuvres. It’s really easy to prepare, it doesn’t take a long time to make it (30 min) and it’s delicious. I’ve tested it on many occasions and each time it was a dish which vanished the quickest from the table. I call it The Snails. This recipe is for about 60 snails depending on how you will cut the puff pastry. Ingredients: Puff pastry (two packets) Tomato pulp (one can) or 4 mixed tomatoes Tomato concentrate (3 teaspoons) Egg (1) Cheese (15 dag) Garlic (4 cloves) Basil (1 teaspoon) Pepper Salt Cut the rolls into about 1,5 cm slices, use a sharp knife. Put the snails on a baking tray covered with baking paper. Repeat each step for the second puff pastry. Cover the snails with the rest of fluffed egg. Put in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes until they start to brown. The snails are good to eat hot or cold. I’ve shown you my favorite version of this dish but of course you can make your very own stuffing with the ingredients you like the most. For example you can use spinach, mozzarella, mould cheese, pesto, ham or chicken. You can also prepare the sweet version of the snails, for example with cinnamon or poppy-seed. Recipe: Put puff pastry in a freezer for about 10 minutes. To make the stuffing mix tomato pulp (or mixed tomatoes) with tomato concentrate. Grate cheese and add it to tomatoes. Put garlic through garlic press and add it to the stuffing. Add condiments: basil, pepper and salt. Your stuffing is ready. Preheat the oven to 180oC. Unroll puff pastry. Put ½ of the stuffing on the puff pastry and spread it thinly. Leave some space at the border of puff pastry and cover it with fluffed egg. Roll puff pastry as shown on a picture below. I would like to leave you with this quote: There is no love sincerer than the love of food (George Bernard Shaw) Zagłosuj na ten artykuł na stronie www.blabel.agh.edu.pl/gazeta 13 THE BLABELS Ahmet Alper, Mert Akkaya As two Turkish students who are very fond of Poland, we decided to write this article to enlighten you about our beautiful country and –at the very least- return the favour. Here you can learn a lot regarding Turkey; its geography, weather, food, education, tourism, the people, and what you can do in Turkey as an exchange student. Turkey is an amazing hub which connects Europe to Asia, bordered by a total of eight countries and three seas. This is the reason why Turkey is being referred to as “the Cradle of Civilization” or “the Mosaic of Culture”. Of course these references are somewhat biased, so it’s not hundred-percent objective, but it’s safe to say it’s a country with variety of people, beliefs, lifestyles, cultures and appearances. Our country is the 6th most popular to- urism destination in the world. If you would like to visit natural sites in Turkey, we can offer several places for you. Pamukkale, in the inner part of Aegean region, contains travertines and terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water. It’s completely awesome! Cappadocia is known for its underground cities, cave churches, rock houses and fairy chimneys. We advise you to fly with a balloon to watch this wonderful landscape. In the South East of Turkey, there’s a mountain which is called “Nemrut”. This place contains some sculptures of Greek and Persian gods. If you want more historical places, we highly recom- 14 mend İstanbul to you! When you’re visiting Turkey in winter, don’t forget that you can swim in the South side of Turkey, or you can go skiing on the mountains in the same day! One of the most important thing in Turkey is without a doubt the climate. The falling leaves in the autumn, snowing winter, beautiful nature in the spring, swimming and sunblock in the summer… It’s wonderful to have such transitions happening throughout the year, bringing a change in people’s lives. A Delicious aspect of Turkey is – AS YOU KNOW - the food! Turkish food, unfortunately, is represented T-E-R-R-I-B-L-Y in Poland. Not only the “Kebab” (which is nothing more than a fatty meat of yuck) but traditional Turkish food is also very disappointing. Our food is not consisted of heavy meats or over-spicing. Most of the food we have in Turkey is actually made of olive oil and a lot of vegetables. Of course we have many types of food made from meat or meat products which is what Kebab actually stands for. We have our famous tea and Turkish coffee, which are basically a necessity for anyone having a conversation. The elegant and soft tea and the heavy, foamy coffee…We also have a food that’s actually quite similar to polish traditional Pierogi, Mantı, and its most often described as the Turkish Type Ravioli. It’s basically the same idea but has smaller “wraps” and has meat inside, served with yoghurt on top with garlic. A food especially for the ladies who like to keep their figure, is called Dolma and is simply a rice-stuffed pepper. There’s also another similar food called Sarma which is rice rolled inside a grape leaf. They are both served with yoghurt mostly and optionally with mincemeat. Aside from these there’s also another olive oil dish called İmam Bayıldı. It’s made from Eggplant stuffed with onion, garlic and tomatoes, simmered in olive oil, and served at room temperature. There’s also a food that many people find very “controversial”. THE BLABELS It’s called Kokoreç and it’s made from the large intestines of lamb. It’s very delicious and it never hurts to try! On to the deserts; we have the popular Baklava – a multi-layered flaky pastry which is quite heavy and sweet. For alcohol you have to try our traditional Turkish Raki! It's a very strong drink where you are recommended to mix it with water (which turns its color into white!) before you drink. We take pride of having such large selection of foods and believe it’s one of the most successful and charming parts of Turkey. There are many universities in Turkey, but the best ones are in Ankara and İstanbul. Public schools are completely free, but if you want to study in a private university, initial cost without scholarship varies from 30.000 zl to 60.000 zl. There are scholarships offered to students depending on their success. Partial scholarships are highly common and cuts the overall expenses for such schools tremendously. Some schools have very good scholarships to very few people while some have 30-50% students with overall scholarships. Remember to schedule your classes so you can have some time to travel around the country. Compared to Poland, cost of living is quite high in Turkey. Cooking will be one of your biggest friends to conserve money. If you really want to save up we recommend open markets and bazaars. Unfortunately one of the biggest negative thing you will notice in Turkey is the difference in alcohol prices. A can of beer costs around 5-8 zl on the market and even 12-14 zl in a bar, or 20 – 25 zl in a restaurant. Vodka costs around 70-90 zl. The reason of this is the taxes, of course. Being a regular customer in a bar might get you discounts or free drinks. If you're going to clubs be cautious about the ratio of guys to girls, usually you need to have equal girl to boy ratio. Obviously this rule doesn't apply to groups of girls. Hypocrites! Transportation is around 2.5 zl for the bus, metro and ferry. Aside from these expenses the rest is pretty much the similar, if not cheaper. One important thing to discuss in Turkey is the people. We are somewhat offended to see how Turkey is being represented by the world. While this may be true in some parts of the Turkey (mostly the far Eastern parts), almost all of western Turkey carry exactly the same values as European countries. We wear the same clothes, eat the same food (some of us actually can’t resist the sweet taste of bacon, you know...) choose monogamy and choose to get a proper education. Turkish people are actually very warm people and friendly once you get pass that barrier of introduction. For Polish students, who are very interactive and friendly, it will not be an issue, we’re sure of it! Hope this article will help those who are willing to take the risk of going to Turkey for an exchange programme. I'm saying risk because it's a risk like going all-in when you play poker; doing so might be the best thing you do in life. But it is a country with good and bad sides where it will be up to you to decide. We highly recommend you to go on this adventure as we both love our country and strongly believe Polish culture and Turkish culture are similar in having people that are really warm, fun and characteristic. Have the greatest time in Turkey! 15 THE BLABELS Na odpowiedzi czekamy do 30 stycznia.
